Work Text:

Hinata adjusted his tie in the mirror, eyes boring into his reflection.

Okay Hajime, you can do this. You’re just going on a date with Komaeda, like you’ve done a thousand times. It’ll be nice. And then you’ll-

Hinata’s breath quickened and his skin paled at the reminder of what exactly he intended to do at the end of the night.

Hinata’s minor nervous breakdown was interrupted by a knock on the bathroom door.

“Hajime, are you ready yet?”
“Uh, yeah!”

Komaeda, unsurprisingly, looked stunning. He had the back part of his hair tied back in a ponytail, and he wore a white suit over a black dress shirt and slacks. His tie was crooked, exposing his neck and more of his porcelain skin and his delicate collarbones.

“I hope I didn’t rush you.” Komaeda smiled.

“N-no, you’re fine.” Hinata said. “You look really nice, by the way.”
Komaeda looked down and smiled wryly. “I’m flattered, but I’m sure I look positively dreadful-”
Komaeda’s words were muffled by Hinata pulling Komaeda towards him pressing his lips to Komaeda’s. It was chaste, yet sweet, and Komaeda’s slightly chapped lips gave Hinata the same rush as it did the first time they kissed, at their high school graduation party.

Hinata pulled away, to face Komaeda, now with his lips parted and his eyes wide, a light blush dusting his cheeks.

“You’re beautiful, Nagito. I’ll keep telling you that until you believe it.”
Komaeda smiled warmly. “You’re so compassionate, Hajime.”

Hinata walked towards the apartment door. “Shall we?” He asked, jokingly bending his arm in a way that invited Komaeda to lock arms with him.

Komaeda did just that and giggled. “Yes.”

Hinata and Komaeda stood under the ledge of a random grocery store. If they were to step out, they’d get soaked by the rain that had begun to pour down heavily partway through their walk and now showed no signs of stopping.

“The forecast said nothing about rain.” Hinata grumbled.

Komaeda looked at his watch and grimaced. “It’s 6:20. We missed the reservation.”
Hinata frowned. “Shit. I’m sorry, Nagito. I know you were looking forward to this.”
Komaeda shook his head. “It’s fine, Hajime! I’m just happy to be with you.”
Hinata smiled. “Thanks, Nagito. I lo-”

Not yet. Near the end of the night, maybe.

“I’m glad to be with you.”
If Komaeda picked up on Hinata’s slip up, he showed no signs of it, simply smiling and pressing a brief peck to Hinata’s cheek. “That means the world to me.” Komaeda whispered. They stared at each other for a few moments.

“Oh, the rain stopped.” Hinata commented, noticing the pitter-patter of the rain now going quiet.

Komaeda smiled. “We can still walk through the park.”
“That’d be nice.”

Komaeda and Hinata walked on the pavement surrounding the lake, fingers intertwined.

“The sun is setting.” Komaeda said, pointing towards the trees across the lake.

Sure enough, the sun began to sink into the horizon.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it.”
“Yeah,” Hinata said, leaning his head into Komaeda’s shoulder, Komaeda’s hair tickling his face.
“Nagito, I-”

“ARF!” The bark made him and Komaeda freeze and pull away from each other.
Hinata whipped his head to see a big dog running towards him.

“Oh, a do- GAH!”
The dog had stopped next to Hinata and bit hard at his leg.

“Agh! Stop it!” Hinata tried to shake the dog off to no avail. He winced at the teeth sinking into his knee.
“HEY!” A lady ran towards him. “BAD DOG!”
The dog pulled away from him and ran towards his apparent owner.
“I’m so sorry,” The lady said, petting her dog. “Roxie usually doesn’t do stuff like this.”
“It’s fine,” Hinata said, rubbing his leg.

The lady bowed apolegetically once more and walked off.

“Hajime, are you sure you're okay?” Komaeda asked.

“Y-yeah.” Hinata said. “Can we watch the stars?”
“S-sure.”

“That’s the little dipper, and that’s the big dipper.”
Hinata looked up at the sky from the bench where they sat, as Komaeda pointed out constillations. “Wow.”
He looked at Komaeda. The moonlight highlighted his sharp, yet delicate eyes, and pale skin.

Something in Hinata broke at that moment.

“That big star is the-”
“I love you, Nagito.”
The world went silent for a few moments.

“Y-you… what?” Komaeda said, looking horrified.
Hinata’s heart sank. “Nagito-”
“Get away from me! You reserve course student.
Hinata’s heart sank even deeper. “You don’t mean that.”
“I do!” Komaeda glared.
“That’s… really how you think of me?” Hinata tried, to no avail, to stop the tears welling up.

Komaeda’s glare faded into guilt and horror. “N-no… Hajime, that’s not…”
Hinata broke down sobbing, and Komaeda wrapped his arms around him.
“Hajime… I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it, don’t cry… god, I really am horrible, aren’t I?”
Hajime pulled away. “Why would you say that then?”
“You can do so much better, Hajime. I- I treated you like shit for years until we started dating. And my luck… do you think that all of that stuff that happened- the rain, the dog- was just a coincidence? It was my luck, Hajime. It could hurt you. So please… for your own good, don’t…”
“Nagito, I don’t give a shit about any of that. I love you, and that’s all that matters.”
“B-but-”
Hinata kissed Komaeda. It was deeper, yet more tender than any they had before.

“I love you Nagito, so please let me be with you.”
Komaeda smiled. “If that’s the case… I love you too.”
The joy Hinata felt was indescribable. He kissed him again.

“I love you, Nagito”
“I love you too.”
