Work Text:
It was still dark when Viktor stood up, displacing the thin sheets to find his clothes in the dark, the green and purple fluorescents of the Undercity being the only thing to guide him around the room.
“Viktor?” A sleepy voice spoke out. He turned around to see her, looking up at him. “Are you leaving already? I’ve barely had you for a day.”
“I’m sorry drahoušek.” He sat on the edge of their bed, fiddling with a lock of her hair, “I wish I could stay longer.” He really did. “Heimerdinger wants us to report our new findings to him and the council. Jayce doesn’t want me to miss it.”
“Can you lay with me? Just for a few minutes, please.” She held his hand and with her dark eyes looking up into his, how could he refuse her. “I just want to pretend, for a few moments.”
Viktor was never a weak man, to those topside, he looked like a man with no weaknesses, a hardened inventor who rose from the Undercity and made his place. To them he wasn’t like the others from the Undercity, he worked hard. If only they saw him now, crawling back into their bed.
“What do you mean pretend, my love?” He said, adjusting his position as she lay her head on his chest, her bare chest pressing up against him.
“It’s silly.”
“Not to me.”
Their voices were no louder than a whisper, the sounds of Zaun were quiet, and neither wanted to break the intimate quiet.
“I just- I miss you when you’re gone. I want to pretend that you’ll still be here when I get home in the evening. Like we’re not a world apart.”
“I’m sorry, I wish I could visit more. The council has been demanding, I’ve had no time to come back.”
“It’s not your fault, I just wish things were different. That we didn’t have to wait years for the papers to go through.”
“I’ll keep visiting until they do, I promise.”
“I know.”
They lay, bodies intertwined in silence, absorbing each other’s presence. Viktor kissing her fingers while her free hand traced the outlines of his body, as though memorising the contours of his ribs.
“Everyone is proud of you, you know. Back at Singed’s lab, we talk about you, how far you’ve gone. I heard some kids talking about you once, how you proved them wrong, how you proved we’re worth something.”
“Where’s this coming from, můj snoubenec?” He laughed slightly, knowing her sentimentality was usually something more.
“It’s nothing. I just want you to know how proud of you I am, and how much I love you” She kissed his nose, “Now, go get ready. You can’t miss your meeting with the council for some lowly trencher.” She smiled sadly. He knew she wanted him to stay, he would have given so much to stay with her in that moment, for five more minutes with her.
“I love you.” He said, sitting up and grabbing his clothes. It wasn’t long before be was dressed and it was time to go. He stoked the top of her head, kissing her forehead. “I’ll be home soon, I promise you drahoušek.”
“I have no doubts meu amor.” She said, kissing him before he stood up, taking his cane and exiting their home, allowing small amounts of the Gray in.
