Below the Belt

Summary:

Shoutout to @AbnormallyAdam and @JuliDG for both saying, “I’m the lamp”. Even bigger shoutout to @Ashkela for writing “I'm the Lamp, Tag Yourself”. They inspired me to write this story from the perspective of Sophie Moore’s belt. This is literally my first published piece of fan fiction, so don’t be surprised if you see some edits in the coming days.

Work Text:

It was a night in at the Moore residence. Sophie was marathoning the final season of Insecure and I, her trusty thin brown leather belt, was updating a certain burgundy beanie on the latest Wildmoore tea. This beanie had recently been on the Bat Team camping trip and was eager to find out the aftermath of Sophie’s “just shut up” kiss. As I was recounting how earlier that day Ryan turned down a lesbian processing session with Sophie, my summary was interrupted by the closet door being flung open.

It turns out Ryan called Sophie to meet up at the Hold Up to talk. About what? Sophie didn’t know, so neither did I. Though in hindsight, the fact that Ryan’s call came during booty call hours should have been a tip-off. However, in the moment, based on Sophie angrily mumbling to herself, a demon time hookup with Ryan Wilder was low on her list of priorities. She’d had enough of the hot & cold treatment, the sidelining, and having her ability to protect herself being underestimated. So, regardless of what Ryan had to say to her, Sophie was going to let Ryan have it…little did she know…

🦇

Sophie pulled up to the Hold Up in the same work wife outfit (including myself) that she’d been wearing earlier that day. Since she was on a mission to read Ryan for filth, she didn’t bother with putting together a head turning outfit like she normally would. Consequently, this gave her more time to come up with talking points. With “Bitter” by Me'Shell Ndegeocello blasting on repeat, she practiced her talking points the whole drive over. And, you know what, they were pretty good. Too bad Sophie barely spit two of them out, before Ryan defused her whole ‘tude with some overdue lesbian processing at the bar counter. For a second, Sophie thought Ryan was letting her down easy and resigned herself to the friend zone.

But Ryan closed the distance between them and, with a kiss, the S.S. Wildmoore set sail. And best believe, It’s maiden voyage was a sight to behold and I had a front row seat.

One tender kiss turned into a multitude of kisses mixed with laughter and joy that carried them up the stairs, to a quick couch detour (Get Well Soon Lampy McBulb!), and, finally, to Ryan’s bed. Once they got on the mattress, their kisses grew even more passionate. Ryan was on top, moving from Sophie’s lips to her neck and down her torso. However, after Ryan’s failed struggle to release my grip of my owner’s waist, Sophie flipped both of them to their proper positions. Before you say anything, I live in a closet, so I know a top when I see one (pun intended) and Ryan is looking like a stranger to me.

Anyways with Ryan’s knees facing the ceiling, her pants/panties came off in quick succession and Sophie joyfully surveyed the Meagan-like bawdy (Take your pick. Thee Stallion, Good, Tandy) of Gotham’s heroine. However, it wasn’t lust in her eyes, or, at least, not lust alone as Sophie gazed reverently at Ms. Wilder.

Now, I’m not a mind reader, so I can’t say exactly what Sophie was thinking in this moment. However, as an article of clothing, I often come pretty close, because I’m like a second skin. I hear everything she says, but I also know the truth of her statements from her body giving her away (quickened heartbeats, hitched breaths, blood flow, etc).

So when I joined her wardrobe several years ago, back when she was still with Tyler, I clocked pretty quick that he was her beard. Don’t get me wrong, Taylor was a nice guy, but he was giving “placeholder”, like he was employee-of-the-month at a temp agency.

Then, there was Kate, the one that got away. There was still love between them 5 years post-Point Rock and, maybe, if none of the Black Mask stuff had happened, they would have figured things out. Unfortunately, what happened happened.

Next, was Julia, the rebound. There was potential there. They had a lot in common, but the trust issues coupled with Sophie’s residual feelings for Kate, probably doomed this relationship from the start anyways.

With Ryan though, it’s always been different, even back when Sophie thought she was just an ex-con with no future (Oh Ryan, you’re so dramatic). Beautiful girls in Gotham were a dime a dozen, but something about Ryan’s 1000-watt smile could stop Sophie in her tracks. Plenty of loved ones, including Wildmoore Ship Captain Jordan Moore, had warned Sophie about the crows. And while their observations didn’t fall on deaf ears, it was never enough to shake her of her delusion that she could somehow reform the crows. Yet, something about Ryan’s critiques and pressure partly convinced Sophie to quit the crows. What was it about Ryan Wilder?

Maybe it was the feeling that Sophie felt every time they held hands. Maybe it was the countless times that they saved each other lives. Maybe it was a warm shoulder and clasped hands in the dark, when the end seemed near for one of them. Only Sophie knows for sure.

Personally, I think it was all their experiences in these past couple years that brought them to the aforementioned moment in Ryan’s bed. So I don’t know exactly what Sophie is thinking as she admires Ryan Wilder, but I can tell you the look on her face is what love looks like.
