Work Text:
The couple was hanging out doing some late night gaming. And while taking a short break, Toast stretches and a ring box falls out of his pocket. He had been keeping it there both so he would not lose it and so that Bones would hopefully be less likely to find it. Without thinking, Bones went over to retrieve it for him, handing it to him without even questioning what it is.
“This fell outta your pocket.”
Toast’s eyes widened and he—more quickly than he intended—took it back and put it back in his pocket. “Th-thanks, love.” There was now a prominent blush on his cheeks.
Bones quirks an eyebrow in concern, “Are you alright? What even was that?”
“N-nothing! It was nothing!” Their attempt to convince them it was nothing important was unconvincing to say the least, and in an attempt to ease the tension in the room, Bones decided to crack, what they believed would be, a harmless joke.
“Was it a ring or something?” They said it lightheartedly; in their mind there was no way that’s what it was. But the silence and increasingly more intense blush on Toast’s face quickly changed their mind about that possibility.
They brought their hand up to cover their face as they felt it heat up, soon feeling their throat tighten and tears begin to push their way out. After a few seconds of silence as both of their minds raced, with Bones attempting to hold back their tears, they quietly asked, their voice breaking a little as they did so, “D-do yo-ou want my answer now? Or-or whenever you were plan-planning to propose?”
“N-now.” He nearly choked it out. Maybe this would make the real proposal he had planned less stressful…or it would tell him to cancel the plans he had for it.
“Yes.” Bones answered immediately, no longer being able to hold back their tears and no longer bothering to try.
“What? Y-yes?”
They nodded, going in to hug their now fiancé, resting their chin on their shoulder. “Yes I-I want to marry you.” Their voice quieted down somewhat as they said the next part, “I just—I-I never thought anyone would want to spend forever with-with me.”
“Well, I do.” Their voice displayed dead seriousness as they hugged them back. “I definitely do.”
Bones was speechless for a minute, and after that time, there was only one thing they could think to say, “…I love you.”
“I love you too. I love you so much”
