Chapter Text
“No.”
“Please,” Aether begged. “If you testify-”
“If I testify,” Ajax interrupted. “It wouldn’t make a difference in your case.”
“You don’t know that.” Lumine had finally intervened. She had finished looking over the documents that laid on the table and turned her attention to Ajax. “We can’t use anything you give us if you remain anonymous. There would be doubt. If you testify, we win legitimacy.”
“Even if you win legitimacy,” Ajax stared back at Lumine. He knew that if he didn’t testify, then they would lose the case. After all, there was a reason why he had avoided jail for almost 10 years. “You will not win this case. The only outcome will be my death, and I would like to avoid dying.”
Aether sighed. He didn’t know where everything went wrong. It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this. Ajax was supposed to go in, get information, relay it to Lumine and himself, and then get out. They all knew that he would need to lie low for a few months after the extraction, while they finished the case, but why Aether couldn’t understand was why Ajax was so hesitant now. It was like Aether was talking to a completely different person.
“What happened?” Aether yelled. He couldn’t hold it in anymore. The person that he knew would have never backed down from a fight. That person wasn’t who Aether was looking at. “Where was the person who would stop at nothing until Celestia was gone? He would risk his life if it meant putting away one of its major leaders. Where did he go, Ajax?”
The room fell silent after Aether finished. Ajax looked away from the twins. “What happened? You want to know what happened? Fine. I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you everything.”
