Work Text:
Kokomi glanced out the window and frowned. Sara should have been home by now. She could only think of 99 possibilities that could have held her up. Unlike her usual weekly routine, Sara had promised to leave work earlier than usual, so they could spend more time together for Kokomi’s birthday. Hearing a faint knock at the door, Kokomi set down the book she was reading and walked to greet her guest.
Her jaw dropped, however, upon seeing Sara bruised, bloody, and sopping wet at the doorstep. Sara’s wings were protectively curled around her, and both her hands were clasped in front of her, clutching a small item. She opened her mouth, but before she could get a word out, Kokomi held up a hand to stop her. “Wait here. I’ll get you a towel and draw up a bath. Do not move a muscle until I’m back.”
Once Kokomi was ready, she brought Sara to the bathroom to tend to her wounds. “Care to explain?” she asked.
“I would’ve at the door but—” Sara started, before being shot a glare from Kokomi. She cleared her throat. “Anyway, I might have made a slight detour after work.”
Based on her previous state, Kokomi guessed that she had been caught unawares by some hydro-infused monster, but now that she knew Sara had purposefully sought out a fight, she was confused. Kokomi knew Sara was an extremely capable warrior, she wasn’t the General of the Shogun’s Army for nothing, so it wasn’t like her to seek out highly dangerous monsters without backup. She looked up at Sara with furrowed brows. It just didn’t make sense.
Sara lowered her eyes to the mysterious item in her hands. “I know you said you just wanted books for your birthday, but I wanted to get you something really nice.”
She opened her hands to reveal a beautiful, sapphire-colored gemstone. “Guess I was in over my head, huh?” Sara said, grinning sheepishly.
Kokomi’s gaze softened. Her incredible, bird-brained girlfriend. Without answering, she gave Sara a chaste kiss and started putting things away, save for a few rolls of bandages. “Take your bath, and I’ll put your bandages on after.”

“I’m sorry for ruining your birthday,” Sara mumbled into Kokomi’s hair. They were curled up in bed, settling down after the crazy events of the day.
“You didn’t ruin it,” Kokomi said.
Sara snorted, “Yeah, and you definitely weren’t mad earlier.”
“I wasn’t mad, well, maybe a little bit, but I was mostly worried. You matter so much to me. Birthday or not, I don’t want you risking your life for something I’ll like.”
“But you matter a lot to me, too. I want you to be happy.”
Kokomi melted at how sweet her girlfriend was. This was the side of Sara she loved. “Even if you had gotten me nothing, I still would be happy.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I have you,” Kokomi stated plainly.
“You’re so cheesy,” Sara said, burying her face in the crook of Kokomi’s neck.
“Says you,” Kokomi teased, kissing the crown of Sara’s head.
“Goodnight, Kokomi.”
“Goodnight, my love.”
