“I called, you didn’t answer,” he said with an unmistakable venom in his voice.
They’d been fighting for weeks, and if she was being honest she didn’t care how bad he felt. He should probably feel worse.
“I have better things to do than sit around and wait for whenever you feel like participating in my life.”
There was an uncomfortable silence and she almost hung up on him.
Then she steeled herself and continued, “I will show you just how wrong you are. I’m going to continue on and you’ll see, this show is going to be bigger than it ever was. I don’t need you in it.”
“I give you 10 years,” he spat. “I’ll bet you can’t even make it that long.”
“Bet,” she stabbed back at him.
“What?”
She didn’t allow herself to tremble when she responded measuredly, “If I make it 10 years, you have to admit you were wrong and come back.” He was quiet and she continued, not holding back now, “You have to do it all. Find the crew, hire the showrunners, write the script, run your own show. You have to make me the ending I want. It’s what you deserve, you asshole. And it’s what I deserve too.”
There was more silence as her heart beat intensely against her chest.
Finally he said, “Fine, but there’s no way you’ll make it. It’s inhuman. It’ll be hell. You’ll regret this.”
He could be smug all he wanted, she thought, because she knew she’d never lose.
