"Jungwon can't you, like, stay still? My head hurts just looking at you." Sunoo said as he watched his roommate pace back and forth their small living room.
"What am I supposed to do?!" Jungwon whined and Sunoo’s eyebrow twitched. He glanced helplessly at the desk calendar as if the inanimate object would somehow help him.
"I don't know what to get him." Jungwon resigned and plopped down next to Sunoo, making the couch dip. Sunoo immediately placed a hand on Jungwon’s shoulders to calm the agitated guy down.
"Just get him chocolates, like you do every year." Sunoo offered but Jungwon only looked at him in disbelief.
"If it was that easy then I wouldn't be torn up about it in the first place!"
"Okay, geez. Cranky much?" Sunoo said and slightly pushed Jungwon away.
One of the rooms opened and Niki came out, looking like he had just stepped out of the shower. Their apartment has three rooms but ever since Sunoo and Niki got together last year, one of the rooms stayed empty—making it an impromptu stock room-slash-guest room when they have guests over.
"Both of your whining is making my head hurt." Niki said as he tousled the back of his head. The taller guy sat next to Sunoo and kissed his forehead making the older guy blush.
"Morning sunshine."
Sunoo just smiled and Jungwon groaned.
"What does a guy need to do to get a little respect around here?" Jungwon said and reclined on the couch. Niki reached over and flicked his forehead. "Good morning to you too."
Jungwon just rolled his eyes and proceeded to bite at his nails, lost in his own thoughts.
"What’s wrong with him?" Niki asked Sunoo who only gave the younger guy an incredulous look. Niki looked confused for a second before following the path of Sunoo’s gaze and when he landed on the calendar, his face lit up with recognition.
It’s a week before February fourteen. Valentine’s Day.
Niki smirked and Sunoo gave him a warning look. But Niki never listened to Sunoo anyways so the oldest of the three just shrugged and rolled his eyes when he saw the mischievous look on his lover's face.
"Why don't you just tell him you love him?"
A pillow flew towards Niki's face and loud laughter sounded from the attacked guy himself.
"One more word from you and I would cut your tongue off."
"Harsh." Niki said, raising both arms up. "But isn't it true though? We can practically see your eyes turning into heart shapes whenever you look at Heeseung." Niki just shrugged, closing his eyes. Another pillow gets thrown but this time, Niki caught it in his hands.
"You know what, Imma get out of here before I got hit in the crossfire." Sunoo announced and stood up, going towards the kitchen to get himself a cup of coffee Jungwon had brewed earlier.
He took a glance towards the living room where Niki was continuously teasing Jungwon whilst the other kept hitting the youngest with a throw pillow.
Sunoo smiled and took a sip, blanching when the bitter coffee invaded his taste buds. He cursed Jungwon and his taste for bitter coffee.
Grabbing the sugar container, Sunoo shouted in shock as he felt himself getting pulled by the waist and he came face-to-face with an angry looking Jungwon who was holding a pillow above his head—ready to strike.
“Let me go!” He shouted over his shoulders towards Niki as the younger guy continued to use him as a shield against Jungwon’s fury.
Niki just laughed.

Niki’s bullying me
I need your help ( ≧ Д≦)
Haha
No he’s not
Niki’s an angel
You’re choosing him over me?
What’s this?
My best friend not choosing my side?
I hate you
Our friendship is over ( ◣_ ◢)
I’m outside
I brought ice cream
And one mint choco for Sunoo
Don’t know why he likes this stuff
Are you still mad at me?
^^
No ( `ε´)
I’m opening the door now
Also I can never be mad at you
It was five days before Valentine’s Day and Jungwon still hadn't brought any presents for Heeseung.
His best friend.
His number one supporter.
His ride or die.
His day one.
The love of his life.
Jungwon blushed and he needed to stop and take a large inhale before continuing his walk to class.
Honestly! If it wasn't for that stupid Niki and his big mouth he wouldn't be agonizing over what to give Heeseung for Valentine’s and he'd only give him the usual store-bought chocolate bar.
If Niki hadn't told him that he maybe crushing over the guy then he would've just brought those bundled chocolates on the groceries, give them to Heeseung, and then call it a day.
But no, Niki just had to open his mouth and in turn open Jungwon's eyes that he is, indeed, in love with his best friend.
And if it wasn't for their strange tradition of giving gifts to each other during Valentine’s Day then he wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place!
Jungwon inwardly groaned as he walked past students clamoring to go to their own classes before the bell rings.
A slap to his back startled him and the musical laughter of Jake, one of their friends, reached his ears.
"Jungwonie! If looks could kill, everybody in this damned hallway would've dropped dead already."
Jungwon just grunted in acknowledgement as they walked towards their shared class—statistics.
"Hey Jake?" Jungwon started as they rounded a corner. "Hmm?" Jake responds and then proceeds to greet someone he knew—his other arm still around Jungwon’s shoulders.
"What are you giving Jay and Sunghoon this Valentine's?" Jungwon asked. Jake stopped in his steps momentarily dragging Jungwon back a little bit. The other guy cleared his throat and they continued to walk.
"Take them out on a date I guess?" he said his response like it was a question.
Jungwon looked at Jake at the corner of his eyes. Sometimes he envies the older guy for being true to himself and even though the three's whole relationship was confusing, Jungwon was actually happy for the three of them.
Hey, whatever works for them, works for them.
As Jungwon and Jake opened the door to their classroom, a screaming Sunghoon immediately latched onto Jake's back, trying to hide behind the smaller man.
"Hide me please." Sunghoon said as he ducked behind Jake who was smiling from ear to ear at seeing his beau.
"Anything for you babe." Jake replied.
Jungwon watched in fascination and humor as he saw Jay, who looked absolutely crossed, immediately following Sunghoon.
"Guess it’s my time to exit." He whispered to no one in particular and walked towards his seat.
Next to Heeseung.
Jungwon fleetingly forgot that there were other students with them. The world muted, sounds disappeared except for Heeseung's laughter.
As he watched Heeseung's eyes turn into crescents—his lips forming their famous heart shape, his whisker dimples making his cheeks look so adorable—he immediately felt like time definitely stopped.
And he wasn't complaining.
Heeseung had always been beautiful. But now that Jungwon had finally realized his feelings for the guy, he was a hundred times more beautiful in Jungwon's eyes.
Like he was Aphrodite itself, gracing humanity with his beauty.
"Jungwon? Are you okay?" Heeseung's slightly worried voice and a hand on his shoulder reeled him back in the present.
The sound of everything came back with a boom and Jungwon blinked his eyes to get back to the present.
"You’ve been standing there looking blank."
"Yeah. I’m fine." Jungwon answered—placing his bag on his desk and sitting down. "What’s with them?" he threw a thumb over at the Jay and Sunghoon who was bickering with Jake stuck in the middle of the two looking amused.
"Jay and Sunghoon was arguing who should ask Jake out for their Valentine's date." Heeseung shrugged but the smile hadn't left his face. Jungwon wondered if he could take a picture and keep it as his wallpaper.
"Jake told me he would ask the two of them out though." Jungwon said and got his textbook out.
"Yeah? Well, the two of them are certainly fighting over who should ask. Apparently, Jay already asked Sunghoon and Sunghoon wanted to be the one to ask Jake but Jay wanted to ask them out both."
"They’re overcomplicating things. They should just tell each other directly. And isn’t it a given that they’re spending Valentine’s Day together anyways regardless of who asks?" Jungwon replied with a matter-of-fact tone. Heeseung got silent.
Curious as to why his best friend had gotten quiet, Jungwon took a glance at him and found him just sat there and staring at him.
"Hee?" Jungwon slowly asked—ears blushing at the older guy's stare.
"Ah! Yeah. They’re overcomplicating things. Haha." Heeseung chuckled awkwardly—scratching his right cheek with his pointer finger. Jungwon narrowed his eyes in suspicion. It was a tell-tale sign that Heeseung was hiding something, or wasn't telling him anything.
Before he could ask the other guy if there was something he wanted to tell Jungwon, their professor came in—lightly smacking the trio's heads with the class roster.
"It’s always you three." Their professor said exasperatedly and waked past the trio who collectively said sorry, following in to take their seats.
As the professor started to get attendance, Jungwon kept giving side glances at Heeseung who was looking straight.
He might've looked attentive but Jungwon could tell something bothered his bestfriend.
And Jungwon's mind couldn't calm itself. Not until he wiped that small frown on Heeseung's lips.

We need to listen to the discussion
This will appear on the test
I’ll get you food later
Okay ( `ε´)
Jungwon stabbed his asparagus, making his plate screech in response. The others looked at him with teasing smiles on their faces.
“Looks like someone’s missing their “best friend” over here.” Jay teased as he bumped shoulders with Jungwon. The younger just glared at him.
“No.” Jungwon pressed. “I just want to eat my lunch in peace but can’t because you five can’t seem to keep it in your pants!” He scolded and pointed to the others with him—one by one. “Can’t I just finish my food first without you guys rubbing it in my face that I’m still single?”
Their laughter was eerily in sync.
“Ah, Jungwonie. You should just ask Heeseung out. That way you won’t stay single.” Sunghoon goaded and placed an arm around Jungwon who was feeling like stabbing something with his fork as the seconds ticked by—and Sunghoon’s eyeballs just seem to be the perfect candidate.
“The guy’s whipped. You two just kept denying the obvious.” Jay added, getting a broccoli from Jake’s plate and placing it in his mouth.
“We’re not. And how many time have I told you,” he pushed Sunghoon’s arm off his shoulders, “that Heeseung only sees me as a friend.”
“Uh-uh and we’re not gay.” Sunoo piped in leaning on the table to get closer to Jungwon. “Please, just like you have hearts in your eyes when with him, he has them too. In fact, I’m pretty sure he’s more whipped than you are.”
Jungwon just rolled his eyes and continued eating. Heeseung was supposed to eat with them but the hockey team’s coach called a meeting and of course, as captain, he had to attend.
“Aren’t you supposed to be there too, you know, vice-captain and all?” Jungwon pointed his fork at Jake who was happily eating.
Jake just stared at him and swallowed before opening his mouth to reply. “I did get there but coach just told me they only needed Heeseung. I don’t know what they want though.”
“Maybe they’re discussing about the upcoming nationals? We’re up against the Wolves aren’t we?” Niki piped up, opening his mouth as Sunoo fed him some meat. Jungwon crunched his nose in distaste.
“Yeah. And with the pressure of wanting to have a back-to-back win, Heeseung’s been pushing us with training since the start of the year.” Jake complained and slumped on the table.
“Maybe you’re just being lazy.” Jungwon commented.
“You’re going to take his side no matter what so your opinion doesn’t count.” Jake said back, his voice muffled.
“Whatever.” Jungwon replied.

Yea.
But I guess it’s just him being lazy.

Well you are a bad influence
Fuck you
Four days until Valentine’s and Jungwon was feeling the pressure. Niki had already bought Sunoo a gift—a ticket to Japan since Sunoo had always wanted to go there and meet Niki’s family, the guy had been having part time jobs on top of hockey and classes so Jungwon really respected him for that.
Doing his absolute best to make Sunoo feel his affection.
Niki was going to receive macarons—Jungwon was there to watch as Sunoo, the epitome of store-bought gifts and immediate resolutions, learned how to bake one.
Jay, Jake and Sunghoon—after their fiasco on who should ask who—finally settle on going over to a ski resort owned by Sunghoon’s family. Jay brought the two of them handmade bracelets—a little bird told Jungwon it has Swarovski diamonds (can he have one too?) And Jake got them each a bottle of Roja Dove—Jungwon was there when Jake received the delivery.
Jungwon still hadn’t gotten Heeseung anything.
He cannot start a part-time job now and get Heeseung a ticket to Universal in such short notice. He cannot bake, for the life of him that even Sunoo had kicked him out of the kitchen. His family is not that rich that they own resorts to bring Heeseung to. He cannot afford to buy expensive jewelry and perfume.
The only thing he can do is buy Heeseung a box of Ferrero maybe a few stems of red roses and that’s it.
Jungwon plopped down his bed and stared at his ceiling. Sunoo and Niki had went out hours earlier leaving the distressing guy to himself—though, they had asked if he wanted to come but he refused. He didn’t need to be third wheeling right now.
Jungwon looked at his desk calendar and counted the days—tomorrow, they won’t have classes since, coincidentally (and many students found this very convenient), their school’s founding day fell on the 12th.
Heeseung and the others have a practice match with another school tomorrow though so he’ll be coming to watch. Niki and Sunoo are flying early on the 13th and Jay, Jake and Sunghoon the night before the 14th.
Jungwon would be left alone.
Maybe he could offer himself to Heeseung?
He immediately sat up and covered his face with a pillow, screaming at it until he was hoarse. What the fuck was he thinking!? His whole body felt hot as he felt the embarrassment climb from his toes all the way to his head.
He really should stop reading yaoi.
He’s phone rang and he immediately picked it up, hearing the special ringtone he had set as Heeseung’s.
“Hello?” He tentatively asked as he waited for the older guy’s voice.
“Jungwon? Did I call you?” Heeseung's sleepy voice greeted him and he chuckled. Glancing at the clock as he smiled to himself. It was already quarter to one in the morning. He should give Niki and Sunoo a text saying they should be back home already.
“Yeah. We’re you sleeping?” Jungwon said, voice soft as he hugged the pillow he used to cover his face earlier. He scooted until his back was pressed against his wall.
Heeseung hummed, voice sounding cute, and Jungwon fought the urge to coo. “I was dreaming of you.”
Jungwon’s smile widened as he listened to Heeseung’s child-like voice, he goes like this when out of focus. And the only one who’s seen him being like this is Jungwon. “Really? What did you dream about?”
“I dreamed we were on that hill we used to frequent when we were kids.” Jungwon hummed letting Heeseung continue his story. “And everyone was there too and we were laughing.”
Jungwon chuckled.
“But you looked more stunning than everyone else.”
Jungwon’s breath hitched. If he would associate Heeseung with one superpower it would be time-manipulation, because with just a few words, he was able to make Jungwon’s time stop.
He would be doing the bare minimum, like pushing his fringe out of his eyes and Jungwon would feel like everybody would stop and stare at him. Everything about Heeseung just make you want to drop everything and just stare at him all day.
“Then suddenly we turned into caterpillars and was arguing who should get to eat the largest leaf.”
The sound that came out of Jungwon was inhuman as he guffawed at the sudden twist in Heeseung’s dream. Of course, who was he kidding? This is Heeseung they’re talking about. Heeseung who’s had weird dreams ever since they were kids.
“Caterpillars?” Jungwon stifled a laugh.
“Yeah.” There was rustle on the other line, Heeseung probably turned to his other side. Jungwon can picture the other guy beside him right now. No matter how many times they had slept together—on sleep overs and when Heeseung was too tired to go a few miles more towards his own apartment—Jungwon still earnestly wished Heeseung was beside him. Especially now that he wasn’t looking at the guy with only friendship in mind.
“Why caterpillars?”
“Because I was watching natgeo earlier. Maybe it influenced my dream. You know, when you think of one thing before going to sleep and that bleeds into your dream. That kind of thing?”
Those words may have meant nothing to Heeseung. May not even mean anything else for the other guy. But as Jungwon listened to Heeseung slowly succumb back to sleep, the only thing running through his mind was Heeseung’s explanation of why he dreamed they were caterpillars.
Because that must mean that before Heeseung fell asleep, he was thinking of how stunning Jungwon was compared to everybody else.

Didn’t wanna put the call down
But you’re already asleep and I need to go to sleep too
Good night, Hee!
Good luck on your game
Text me when you see this
I’ll cheer as loudly as I can
Like I always do
Jungwon felt a bead of sweat trickle down his back as he watched the game with anxious eyes.
The team’s regular right defenseman had come down with a flu—making them one player short and since this was just a practice game, the coach had not thought to bring any of his substitute players along.
Though, it was still considered as a practice game, it was still the game before the nationals and losing here would greatly affect the team going forwards.
Sunghoon subbed in and though he was great at skating, he was not a hockey player so he constantly let the other team slip past their defense zone.
Niki was showing how good of a goalie he was though and still hasn’t made a puck get through their post.
Heeseung, as center, had pulled back to being a playmaker instead of his usual role as a sniper—passing this off to Jake.
Though they didn’t let the opposing team score, they hadn’t scored one themselves and was having a hard time because they were practically a player short.
“Pass!” They heard Jake shout as he made a dash towards the open left side. Heeseung raced after Jake, trying to keep control of the puck and give it to Jake at an opportune moment.
Heeseung looked around and immediately he skidded to a stop, racing towards the other side opposite Jake. Jungwon furrowed his eyebrows as the weirdness of Heeseung’s decision.
“I thought they’re passing it to Jake?” Jay asked, voice in a whisper. “Why is he suddenly running opposite?”
“I don’t know. Maybe he has an idea for a play.” Sunoo answered, eyes glued to the game as the opponent’s defensemen hurried after Heeseung who was dodging everything the opponents are doing to keep the puck on his stick.
“A dumb idea.” Jay sulked and Jungwon elbowed the other guy, making him cough.
“What the hell!?” Jay shouted.
“If you’re not playing on ice, you’re not entitled to an opinion.” Jungwon sneered making Sunoo laugh. “Why’d you have to insult Heeseung in front of Jungwon?”
“I wasn’t insulting Heeseung, I’m saying he’s running away from Jake when he should’ve passed the puck to him.” Jay pouted, rubbing the area Jungwon had elbowed.
Then, Jungwon’s eyes widened—realizing what it was Heeseung was trying to do. His smile brightened as he watched his best friend skate through the ice. “He’s luring them away.”
Sunoo and Jay looked at Jungwon. “The opponent still think Heeseung is playing the role of a sniper so they’re trying to get him away from the goal, when in fact it’s the opposite. He’s trying to get them away from Jake.”
Sunoo and Jay snapped their heads towards the rink and followed the center as he weaved across the other players of the opposing team.
Suddenly Sunoo stood up and screamed. “Hee! Jungwon said that if you can shoot this he’s going to tell you something!”
Jungwon’s whole body felt like it was on fire. His cheeks flared red and Jay burst out laughing. The other people present on the stadium also looked at them and even though Heeseung’s face was covered by his helmet—Jungwon could tell the bastard was smirking.
Jungwon reached out and grabbed the back of Sunoo’s shirt, dragging the other guy back to his seat.
“Shut the fuck up.” He hissed. It only made Sunoo laugh.
When Heeseung was almost close to their goal post, he gave Jungwon a wave and wrist shot the puck towards Jake, who was already waiting to score the goal.
The buzzer went off and they won, one to zero.

What a show off
Congratulations ( ・ωー )~ ☆
All thanks to Jake
He made the winning shot
You made it possible though
Give yourself enough credit, Captain
What were you going to say to me anyway?
Nothing
Sunoo just made all that shit up
HAHAHA
Helped with making the opponent think I’m shooting it though
They forgot about Jake for a second
And it was all he needed
Sometimes I wonder how good you are when you’re an idiot
Hey!
Anyways, gtg
Coach is announcing something
I’ll see you later, okay?
Yeah sure!
See you!
Don’t forget to ice your shoulders!
Of course
What would I do without you?
Thanks, Wonie.
“Are you sure you’re fine being alone?” Sunoo fussed as he turned around one more time to look at Jungwon.
“Yes mom.” The other guy rolled his eyes and shooed Sunoo away.
“He’ll be fine, Sunshine. Besides, I’m pretty sure a certain someone is going to come over.” Niki teased as he gave Jungwon a wink. Jungwon groaned and pushed them out the door.
“Have you figured out what you’re giving him as a present?” Sunoo asked once again. Jungwon shook his head. He’d been contemplating about what to give Heeseung but he still couldn’t think of what the guy would possibly want.
He would probably accept whatever it was Jungwon would hand him but Jungwon wanted it to be special.
Something that would unintentionally tell Heeseung how much Jungwon cares for him without it being so obvious.
“I don’t even know what he wants. He can buy stuff with his own money so expensive things are out of the list.” Jungwon answered. “But, that’s beside the point! You should go! You might miss your flight!” He pushed the two of them harder, making them walk outside the door.
“Heeseung is a simple guy. Just be honest!” Sunoo added before Jungwon waved them off and closed the door. As soon as the door shut, he slumped on it and slid towards the ground—feeling hopeless.
He wanted Heeseung to have the perfect Valentine’s Day present but he just can’t seem to find one.
Jungwon has exhausted all his options and if there really is nothing else then he’d probably just settle for store-bought chocolates. After all, it’s the thought that counts, right? Besides, it ticked all check boxes for a Valentine’s Day gift.
It may be lazy but Jungwon and Heeseung had been giving each other chocolates since forever, it didn’t have to change.
He still has next year to find Heeseung the perfect gift.

Jungwon rushed to the door when he heard it open—they’d already exchanged keys as soon as they’d moved in back when they first started college.
“Orange chicken?” Jungwon asked as he snatched the bag from one of Heeseung’s hands.
“Uh-huh. And iced tea.” Heeseung said and raised the drink carried on his other. Jungwon jumped happily and skipped towards the living room—Heeseung followed and chuckled as he watched his best friend tearing at the plastic to get to his food.
“So,” Jungwon began, mouth bulging out as he chewed on his food, “what do you want to talk about?”
“Finish eating first. I don’t want you choking.” Heeseung rolled his eyes and broke his chopsticks apart.
“Why don’t you choke me instead?” Jungwon teased making Heeseung glare at him. “I will strangle you if you don’t stop.” The other guy replied making Jungwon laugh.
“Who taught you that anyways?” Heeseung grumbled under his breath and Jungwon almost cooed at the soft pink tinting the tip of Heeseung’s ears. “Stop acting like we're grade schoolers, Lee. It’s very unbecoming.” Jungwon teasing rolled his eyes and slapped Heeseung’s upper arm.
“Just shut up and eat your food.” Heeseung pouted and began eating—the pink growing to a full-blown red.
Jungwon’s only answer was a loud laughter.
Before long, the two of them fell into silence as they ate their food, Jungwon had turned the TV on so they could watch something as they enjoy their food.
After they finished, Heeseung gathered their waste and threw it on the trash bin while Jungwon went to get some snacks for them to chew on.
“Okay. Now tell me what’s bothering you.” Jungwon said as Heeseung plopped down beside him, reaching for a candy.
Heeseung hesitated for a while before looking at Jungwon and finding the other guy’s understanding gaze. He sighed.
“Remember when coach called for a meeting?” Jungwon nodded and Heeseung continued. “Well, turns out that some pro teams are trying to get me on their team.”
Jungwon’s eyes widened in surprise and happiness. “Are you for real?! That’s big, Heeseung! Congratulations!” He moved in to hug the other guy sitting beside him, but when Heeseung only returned the hug half-heartedly, Jungwon pulled away to stare at the older guy with worry.
“There’s a ‘but’ isn’t there?”
Heeseung nodded. “They wanted me to start training next week. So that for the next season, I’ll be able to play pro. I might have to drop out and continue my education sometime later.”
Jungwon scooted closer and bumped Heeseung with his shoulders, making the other guy look at him. He offered a smile and grabbed both of Heeseung’s hands in his. “Look, whatever you think is best, I’ll always support you. You’ve dreamed of this since we were kids.” Jungwon chuckled. “So whatever your decision is, I’ll always choose to be behind you.”
Heeseung returned the smile and tugged on their joined hands—bringing Jungwon closer for a hug. Jungwon’s laughter increased as he wrapped his arms around Heeseung.
“Did the team offer you a spot?” Jungwon asked, trying to turn his head so he can see Heeseung from his shoulders.
“They were the first one to offer.” Heeseung answered cheekily.
Jungwon just hit his upper arm and wriggled to get free from Heeseung’s hold. “That means you get to see and play with your cousin!”
Heeseung just grinned.
“How lucky.” Jungwon whined and reclined on the couch.
“Hey.” Heeseung called making Jungwon look over at him—the younger guy raised his eyebrows in question. “I’m going to miss you.”
Jungwon reached over and ruffled Heeseung dark hair, feeling the soft locks pliantly part for his fingers. “I’ll miss you too.”
“You’re still playing for the nationals with the team right? Does Jake and Niki know?”
“Yeah. I’m still aiming for a back-to-back win and coach might tell them next week. I still have to inform them of my decision after all.” Heeseung also reclined on the couch and bumped his head to Jungwon’s.
“Thank you, Wonie.” Heeseung said, reaching for Jungwon’s hand. “I wish I could take you with me.”
“And what, be you’re personal assistant? I’m your best friend, Heeseung, learn the difference.” Jungwon teased and squeezed Heeseung’s fingers between his own.
“I wish I could tell this news to the others too but they’ve been so busy lately.” Heeseung sadly smiled. Jungwon took a glance at him out of the corner of his eye. He knew Heeseung was talking about their childhood friends—maybe even implying about one person in particular.
Then in that moment, something registered in Jungwon’s brain—Heeseung might not be readily available next year. And Jungwon might not have until next year to find Heeseung the perfect gift.
He felt his heart sunk to the pits of his stomach.

Hey
It’s Jungwon
I know it’s been a long time since we last talked
But could I ask you a favor?
Are you free on the 14th?
It’s Valentine’s Day.
And Jungwon doesn’t feel well.
He’s been under the weather since last night—he doesn’t even want to get out of his bed. The chocolates he ordered were already on its way to Heeseung. Jungwon rolled on his bed and reached for his phone. 11 AM, he groaned.
There’s dozens of notifications from their group chat—which he chose to ignore, it’d just be pictures of everyone’s trip. There was one from his parents and one from his sister asking him when he’s going to confess—he hurriedly replied to both with a happy valentine’s day and added a special middle finger emoji for his sister.
There’s dozens more from Sunoo and a couple from their friends, he took mental note to read them later.
Heeseung, on the other hand, gave him a total of 2 notifications—one greeting him a good morning and a happy Valentine’s Day along with a reminder that his gift was on the way and one, written in all caps, saying Taehyun called and asked to meet up.
Jungwon swallowed the bile back to his stomach. This, along with the chocolates, are Jungwon’s gift to Heeseung.
He was about to go back to sleep when his phone rang, making him glare at the screen.
He answered and immediately tried to smile, though Sunoo’s face were more angry than anything else.
“What the fuck?!”
“Well, good morning to you too.” Jungwon answered and sat up, feeling his head spin at the sudden movement.
“Don’t you dare good morning me! What’s this thing I heard about Heeseung meeting up with Taehyun?”
Jungwon winced at the sharp tone of Sunoo’s voice, it made his ears ring. “Where did you hear that?”
“Don’t play dumb with me Jungwon.” Sunoo whined. “I know you’re somehow behind this.”
Jungwon watched as Sunoo’s background transformed from indoors to the outside, the sun shining in the background made Jungwon squint his eyes.
“This is my gift.” Jungwon shrugged and answered. Sunoo’s glare only hardened. “What? Try and set him up with his first love? Jungwon you’re smarter than this.” Sunoo sighed exasperated and brought a cup to his lips, dinking from it—judging from Sunoo’s blissful expression after drinking, it probably isn’t coffee.
“I’m not setting them up. Heeseung said he missed our friends from back home and I asked Taehyun if he could meet with him. He agreed and there’s no harm done.”
“You’re an idiot.” Sunoo rolled his eyes. “What would you do if Taehyun asks him out? Or the other way around? What would you do if they started dating? Is that fine with you?”
“If that’s what Heeseung decides for himself then that’s fine with me.” Jungwon shrugged but something in him broke and Sunoo seemed to know. He smiled sympathetically at the other guy. “I don’t want you getting hurt, Wonie. Just—just make sure you’re really okay with everything alright? And when you want someone to talk to, reach out to us. We’re always here to listen or to give you a beating if you’re thick skull still can’t seem to take the hint.” Sunoo smiled and his words made Jungwon chuckle. He got lucky with finding friends that he could depend on when the goings get tough.
“Yeah I will.” Jungwon promised.
Sunoo smiled before he had to go, Niki’s sister was asking him out for a walk. Sunoo didn’t want to go but Jungwon couldn’t find it in him to ask Sunoo to stay, so he waved the other guy off with the promise that he’ll call and Sunoo went away saying he’ll find souvenirs for Jungwon.
The doorbell rang and Jungwon trudged towards the door, taking a peek on the peephole before opening the door. His face fell into a smile when he saw the bouquet of roses and a box that he has a guess on what it contains.
He signed the delivery and thanked the delivery guy before closing the door and walking towards the living room, placing the flowers in a vase with water.
He then sat down and carefully opened the box, there was a handwritten note and he placed it to the side, opting to read it later. His eyes shone when he finally saw what was inside and he was right. House of Leaves.
Jungwon had been wanting this book since forever ago but every time he checked, both offline and online, he couldn’t find copies of it anywhere or it’s always out of stock.
He took a picture of the book and a selfie with the flowers and sent them both to Heeseung.
“Hope you like my gift. Smiley face.” He read out loud and pressed send.
It was left unread.
-
Jungwon opened his eyes to the smell of ramen. His eyebrows furrowed as he can’t remember if Sunoo and Niki was supposed to come home today or tomorrow.
He carefully sat up from his position and was surprised to see a blanket pool at his waist when he did so.
There was soft music playing somewhere.
His head was throbbing. He was a lot sicker than he initially thought. He slowly swung his feet to the ground and helped himself up with hand on the couch’s backrest.
“Sunoo?” He softly called out, his voice sounding hoarse. It was still 1 PM in the afternoon, too early for Sunoo and Niki to get back.
“Hey. How’re you feeling?”
Jungwon’s eyes slightly widened when he heard a voice he never expected.
“Heeseung?” Jungwon asked as he turned around and saw Heeseung standing in front of the kitchen stove with an apron on. The taller guy was looking back at him with a small smile. Jungwon opened and closed his mouth as he tried to make sense of the situation.
Heeseung’s here. But I thought he was with Taehyun? Why is he here? Have I died and went to heaven? Is this all a dream?
Am I still alive?
“Wonie, please sit down. You’re face still looks pale.” Heeseung placed the cooking chopsticks down and walked towards Jungwon, guiding him to one of the chairs.
“Why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be with Taehyun right now?” Jungwon asked as Heeseung went back to the stove. “I had to see you.” He replied. Jungwon felt his heart soar and he wished he could see what expression Heeseung was making.
“Why?”
“I saw the picture you sent. You didn’t look so well.” Heeseung chuckled. “I’m sorry I’m late.”
Jungwon shook his head in disbelief. “How’d you know?”
“You had the book you’ve been looking for since forever Wonie, yet your face was pale and your eyes were dim.” Heeseung answered and poured the ramen into bowls—two bowls.
“Don’t be ridiculous. That’s bullshit.” Jungwon said and crossed his arms. Heeseung chuckled. “Yeah you’re right. I just really wanted to see you when I saw you holding the flowers.”
He placed a bowl in front of Jungwon and offered him a chopstick. Jungwon said thanks and blew on the broth.
“Did you like it?” Heeseung asked, suddenly shy. Jungwon, despite the ringing in his ears, smiled. He reached a hand and grabbed Heeseung’s squeezing to make the taller guy look at him.
“Of course I did. It’s from you.”
The smile Heeseung flashed him was enough for Jungwon and he felt the flutter in his chest increase.
“So how was your day? How was Taehyun?” Jungwon swallowed the lump in his throat. Heeseung smiled wider and Jungwon wished he never asked.
“He’s great! They’re already training for the next season and he promised we’d meet on the ice at nationals next year.” Heeseung paused, reaching over and wiping the corner of Jungwon’s mouth. To the other guy, the action was something familiar, something they’d done a lot of times before—and it may have been that to Jungwon if he hadn’t recognized his feelings. But he did, and if he was wearing a heart rate monitor right now, he was sure his heartbeat was in the hundreds.
“But I told him I might not be playing varsity next year. Of course he worried but I assured him I’ll still be playing hockey but not on school competitions anymore.” Heeseung chuckled and Jungwon faked his—heart still flushed at the seemingly innocent gesture Heeseung had done.
“Thank you, by the way. For the wonderful gift.” Heeseung said and slurped his noodles. “Taehyun told me you reached out to him and told him if he could meet me.”
Jungwon just hummed. Not wanting to talk about Taehyun anymore. He has nothing against the other guy, Taehyun is great. But Jungwon can’t help but feel jealous at the fact that a mere mention of his name will bring a smile on Heeseung’s lips.
“So, did you make any moves?” Jungwon teased, forcing his voice to sound cheery. Sunoo was right, he’s an idiot.
Heeseung furrowed his brows in confusion.
“You know. Asked him out or something? Like you’ve always wanted back in middle school and half of high school.” Jungwon added, faking nonchalance.
Jungwon’s blood boiled at the sight of Heeseung’s cheeks turning red.
“He actually knew I had a thing for him back then.” Heeseung whispered, looking down and playing with the noodles. Jungwon wanted to smack himself for asking such question.
“So he was the one who asked you out then?” Jungwon settled and tried to school his features into impassivity. Heeseung whipped his head up at him. “No! Why would you even assume that?”
“I just thought—“
“No one asked someone out. I don’t see Taehyun that way anymore and besides, I’m pretty sure he’s dating somebody else.” Heeseung cut him off, crossing his arms. “I was just happy to see him again after such a long time. And we’re friends so I had a great time.”
Jungwon cannot hide that he was very happy with the fact that Heeseung hadn’t gotten together with Taehyun. It must’ve shown on his face because Heeseung commented, “Why are you grinning to yourself?”
Jungwon only lolled his tongue out at Heeseung and resumed eating.
“So, you’re not with Taehyun huh? Is there someone else?” Jungwon asked, blissfully unaware that Heeseung had dropped his chopsticks at the sudden question.
“Actually, there is.” Heeseung’s voice was soft. And Jungwon felt himself breaking. He was just playing around. Trying to get a rise out of Heeseung because that’s what they do. That’s what best friends do.
He hadn’t expected to have his heart broken. His migraine worsened and the grip on his chopstick tightened—he was surprised it hadn’t snap into two.
“R-really? Huh? Do I know this person?” Jungwon tried to keep his cool. But in reality he wanted to cry. Of course Heeseung would like someone, they’re nearly done with university and knowing Heeseung, he’s always surrounded by great people all the time. It would be impossible if he hadn’t fallen for one of them.
“I don’t know if you do.” Heeseung answered cheekily. “I actually just realized how much this person meant to me just this week.”
Jungwon’s brows furrowed further. Who is this person and how had he caught Heeseung’s attention?
“I should meet them then.” Jungwon said with finality and left it at that. Going back to eating the ramen in front of him. He was sure he was frowning. He heard Heeseung chuckled and his frown deepened. He was sure tears were starting to form at the corners of his eyes.
He hated how he will always be the best friend—nothing more.
“Actually, do you want to meet them now? I’m sure I could face time them and introduce you two.”
Jungwon couldn’t find it in himself to say no. He had promised Heeseung that whatever the taller guy’s decision is, he’d always be cheering him on. Heeseung’s fingers were slightly shaking, maybe from nervousness—Jungwon can’t seem to pinpoint.
“Sure.” Jungwon shrugged and Heeseung gave him a nervous smile.
They waited for the call to connect. At the first dial tone, Heeseung kept glancing at Jungwon and back to his phone. Jungwon continued eating, the both of them waiting for the call to connect.
At the third ring, Heeseung looked worried. Jungwon had emptied the bowl by then and was also waiting for the call to finally connect. He felt bad when the call forcefully disconnected since no one picked up.
“Maybe they’re busy?” Jungwon offered. Heeseung shook his head looking confused. “Let me try again.” Heeseung said and dialed one more time. Jungwon felt guilty that the call wasn’t connecting. He stood up and gathered their dishes and placed them in the sink.
When the call forcefully disconnected one more time, Heeseung looked at him in plea and a bit of embarrassment. Jungwon sighed and sat down beside him, instead of where he sat earlier.
“Where’s your phone?” Heeseung said, pouting.
Jungwon chuckled, patting the taller guy on the head. “I’m pretty sure it’s in the couch. Do you think they’ll answer if you use another number?” He offered as he stood up. “Maybe.” Heeseung whispered.
Jungwon marched towards the couch and fished for his phone.
His face contorted in confusion when he saw missed calls from everyone. He forgot he placed his phone on silent when he went to take a nap earlier.
“Hey Hee? I’m sorry I missed your call I was sleeping and placed my phone on—“
Jungwon’s eyes slowly widened in recognition.
The missed calls from Heeseung wasn’t done earlier. It was done right now. Just a couple of seconds ago.
Jungwon raised his eyes at Heeseung who was looking at him in anticipation, lips pressed in a thin line and cheeks red.
Time stopped for the both of them. And Jungwon slowly walked towards Heeseung who suddenly cannot meet his eyes. Jungwon sat at the chair opposite Heeseung and placed his phone on the table. The notifications still showing Heeseung’s number.
“Look at me?” Jungwon asked and slowly reached for Heeseung’s cheeks—guiding his eyes towards him. Jungwon was sure his heart might escape from his ribcage if this continues.
“I was trying to be smooth about it but you had your phone on silent.” Heeseung whined and pouted bringing a smile to Jungwon’s lips.
“I’m sorry.” He said, placing his arm down. Heeseung immediately placed it on top of his. The contact made Jungwon’s skin tingle.
“Since when?” Jungwon asked.
“Since I realized I’ve lost slept looking for an available copy of that book.” Heeseung answered, eyes earnestly looking into Jungwon’s. “And when Jake told me I might have,” if it was even possible, Heeseung turned redder but he continued, “romantic feelings for you.”
“Niki also made me realize I have romantic feelings for you as well.” Jungwon answered and he basked in the happiness swelling inside him as he watched Heeseung’s eyes grew in surprise—mirroring the happiness the other guy felt.
“You like me too?”
“More than you’ll ever know.” Jungwon squeezed their fingers together. “Why do you think I was willing to sacrifice myself by letting you meet with Taehyun?”
“I told you he was just an ex crush.” Heeseung smirked. Jungwon just shrugged, the smile not leaving their faces.
“So what does this mean?” Jungwon asked. “Does this mean you’ll be my valentine?”
Heeseung shook his head and stood up, also dragging Jungwon up. They stood there, in the middle of Jungwon’s kitchen, staring into each other. “I don’t want to just be your valentine, Wonie. I want to be your everyday.” Heeseung whispered, leaning down, eyes not leaving Jungwon’s.
Jungwon’s smile was blissful, content and comfortable. Heeseung’s smile was home.
Jungwon pushed up, standing on tiptoes as they placed their foreheads together. The galaxies inside Heeseung’s eyes made Jungwon fall in love all over again. They slowly swayed to an unsung beat only the two of them seem to hear.
“Of course. You’ll always be my first choice, Heeseung Lee.”
Heeseung playfully shivered. “That’s cheesy.”
Jungwon laughed, hitting Heeseung’s upper arm. “Says the guy who tried to confess in a very corny way.”
“Well I wasn’t the one who tried to set up his best friend with another guy even though he has feelings for him.” Heeseung countered, kissing the tip of Jungwon’s nose. Jungwon only pouted.
“You’re never going to let me live that down, huh?”
“Well you know me.” Heeseung smirked.
Then at the same time, they both closed the distance between them and let their lips met in a chaste kiss.
They chuckled awkwardly when they parted yet the stars in their eyes never dimmed.
“It’s hella awkward.” Heeseung whispered, embarrassment present on his smile. “It is weird that I’m kissing my best friend.” Jungwon answered, mirroring Heeseung’s own expression.
But despite that, they both leaned in once again and this time, it felt just right.
Jungwon was sure Heeseung can manipulate time because even though he had never felt the world stop turning, right at that moment, everything seems suspended and framed in a perfect picture.
The dust bunnies shined on by the rays of sunlight filtering through the blinds. The soft music coming from somewhere. The soft sound of their hearts beating together. The feel of Heeseung palms on his lower back. The softness of Heeseung’s hold on his cheek.
Jungwon wanted to capture this moment in his mind’s eye and if he was asked in the future if what his happiest moment was, he would answer right now.
Heeseung might be busy the following days, weeks, months or even years, but Jungwon was positive they’d get through okay. After all, he was talking about the two of them.
And everything would be fine, as long as he had Heeseung.
If Heeseung was Aphrodite then Jungwon was Ares—because for the guy pressing his lips softly against his, he would fight for them to be together.
