Work Text:
Stacks of paper floated around the room and distributed themselves to each cluster of four First Years at the tables. Typing class wasn’t like other classes at Hogwarts: The room was connected to the northwest corner of the library, and the windows had been enchanted to allow in seasonally mismatched sunlight year-round. Each Bar-Let typewriter at a table had been sorted into its own House because Librarian Friel did not allow for House segregated seating - obnoxiously red for Gryffindor, an eye-catching blue for Ravenclaw, an oddly bright green for Slytherin, and Hufflepuffs took the standard black option otherwise used for general library purposes, potentially due to lack of a garish yellow. Each assignment was a piece of paper with practice sentences or a short written assignment, which was to be typed underneath.
HALLOWE’EN 1938
The wyvern climbs the oak tree and flies from bough to bough.
Whilst the onyx cauldron was broken by the angry poltergeist, the silver cauldron was successfully used to brew Pepper Up.
It was the only class Tom was in that was this quiet; no murmurs of students talking to others at their table, no exclamations when reading the assignment, no questions. The layers of Silencing Charms to keep the sounds of dozens of students typing at once from disturbing others in the library created a peculiar feeling of suspension - a sense that talking or other noise would disturb something. Librarian Friel had never reprimanded anyone for doing so, but it was a peace offering of sorts. Despite thons best efforts, typing class also wasn’t considered a class with graded assignments, true homework, or thon official recognition as an instructor. If what Tom had heard from his Housemates was true, it barely was approved to show up on the timetables for the students because of concerns that certain families might think a mandatory Muggle Studies course had been started.
School rules state that students should not carve obscene imagery into the turnip jack-o’-lanterns, tamper with the candles inside, or use them as weapons to injure other students.

The Hufflepuff to his right forcefully struck her keys. The boy across the table with a blue typewriter carefully pecked out the sequence of numbers. The Gryffindor was twirling her wand and whispering the student-made spell to erase a mistake. There was a certain relaxation to copying out the letters and numbers, a rhythm to the click-clacking of the keys, and while Tom hoped he could get away with writing his essays out by hand the rest of this year, he almost didn’t mind these assignments. That is, as long as Librarian Friel didn’t add in questions. Thon tried to choose ‘easy’ ones that didn’t rely on having been at Hogwarts for a year already, but it was painfully obvious that thon hadn’t thought of students who were, well, like him.
What colour of candles are traditionally lit during Hogwarts’ Silent Supper?
Why do the house-elves switch out the night-time candles to turnip jack-o’-lanterns at the end of October?
In what year did The Friar start leading a vespers service in the courtyard, and for whom?
What Muggle-raised student knew these answers?
