Work Text:

Delphia was shaking, the small relief of the giant furniture hiding her didn’t do much. Dabria’s quaking and clacking footsteps were far from relaxing. She just didn’t want to be found by the goddess. She knew she shouldn’t have thought they’d truly trust her after everything. She disappeared on them and now all her fears would be real. The footsteps stopped and she barely held back a scream as knees followed by a giant red eye appeared by her exit.

“Little raven, please come out ,” Dabria whispered. Delphia backed up more, pressed flatly against the wall. “ I didn’t mean it.

She shook her head. She hated herself right now. She left the pendant in her room because she was supposed to be safe. She couldn’t even reach the doors her size in time to run either. She’d gotten too comfortable. She just wanted to trust them. She had been worried when Dabria was just sitting in front of the mirror. If she hadn’t been worried she could have at least been high enough to escape.

“L-lady D-death please,” she whimpered. She just wanted to leave. She’d go to one of the places Felix made her.

She watched the sadness in the giant red eye grow and she didn’t know what to do. There were so many ways this could go wrong. Dabria just had to move the chair she was under. It wouldn’t be hard, the goddess could just destroy it if she wanted. She didn’t want to be here right now. She took in a shaky breath as the goddess started to move again.

Just like she expected, the chair hiding her started to move. She hugged herself as the only thing she had keeping her out of those hands was taken. She slid down the wall and stared at the goddess who was still kneeling on the floor. Even like this she was intimidating. It was impossible to evade the gods normally, in their own realm it was an idiotic dream. She choked back a sob as Dabria let the chair go and started to move again.

“Little raven, I didn’t know you were here, please talk to me,” she begged.

Delphia couldn’t meet her eyes. She just pulled her knees close and buried her head in her arms. She never considered how being opposites would work with Vitus just making things. Watching something turn to dust in Dabria’s hand was terrifying. She could have gotten away if she hadn’t yelped. She probably could have stayed silent if it was only that. Dabria talking to herself and saying she wanted to just keep Delphia here had been too much.

She was pulled out of her thoughts when the ground started shaking again. She squeaked and curled up a bit smaller. She wished she could just disappear. The ground shook more, but there were no steps. She felt the breath of the goddess wash over her and she just held herself tighter. Dabria was drawing this out, she just wanted to find a way to get out of this. She should just remember they’re gods. They have so much more power than her, she doesn’t get to make her own choices.

“Delphia, please look at me,” Dabria asked. Delphia didn’t move. “I’m sorry I scared you, I had no idea you were in here.”

“S-sorry for i-intruding Lady D-death. I c-can leave,” she stammered. She felt the breath of her sigh again and couldn’t stop herself from curling up even more. “I-I should have a-announced myself.”

“No my raven, you did nothing wrong.” Dabria’s voice was soothing, she couldn’t believe it wasn’t with some intent to trick her. She would look up and see how Dabria had that look others always used to have. The one where Delphia wasn’t a person, but just something they owned. “I was upset by the awful souls I’d guided recently. I worry for you, my raven.”

She lifted her head slowly. She gasped at how close Dabria had come to her. Times like this she really had to understand how small she was to the goddess. She was only about the size of her eye. Delphia bit her lip as she stared into those giant red eyes. She couldn’t understand any of this right now. She ran away, still has so many insecurities, and now she was sitting here in front of the goddess of death after trying to hide.

Why do you care? ” she asked. It just slipped out she hadn’t meant to say it. She covered her mouth immediately, fearfully looking into Dabria’s eyes. She was met with shock and pain, a huge change from what she expected.

“Oh my little raven,” she whispered. Large hands surrounded her quickly and she had no chance to react. She was pushed gently onto one of the palms as Dabria pulled her close. She was close enough to touch her nose by barely reaching forward. She shuddered thinking about the object Dabria had destroyed by touch earlier. “ You’re all I have -”

“What do you mean? The others are all here, you don’t only have me.” She realized from the look she received that she’d interrupted the goddess. She didn’t want to be scared of her like this, even if she was going to be like so many others have.

“I don’t have to worry about them when they leave. You can be hurt in ways we can’t truly understand. I promise you, even if I talk about wanting to keep you locked up here it would never happen. You aren’t ours to control or own, we all know that very well.”

“Lady Death I-”

“Please Delphia, don’t push me away like that. I love when you call my name.” Delphia bit her lip again. One day she’d make herself bleed from this habit. Dabria had been there for so much of her life, she had to get past her own misgivings. There was more than enough time to trap her if that was going to happen.

“Dabria… I’ll be careful when I leave here.” She leaned forward hugging Dabria’s nose. She felt the gasp she caused. “I’ll try to remember your promise.”

“Thank you, my little raven.”
