Work Text:
to say that atsushi was terrified would be an understatement. this newly developed fear of his was far more terrifying than when he first fought his then-rival, now boyfriend, ryuunosuke akutagawa.
he was going to meet gin. sure, they had met a couple of times before but he couldn't say their meetings were on good terms. ryuunosuke assured him that his sister wouldn't bite.
but they will surely stab.
yeah, the older sibling of the akutagawa's wasn't much of a good comforter.
it was the mafioso's day off so he called his boyfriend, telling him that atsushi was going to meet up with gin in a couple of hours.
atsushi, who was previously doing his paperwork in the agency, started to pace down the cold floors of the agency. walking back and forth, his head clutching his short locks.
"shit, shit, shit." he started to curse out of frustration, he wasn't ready for this. kunikida was about to reach out for him when the door to the agency was thrown open by the resident mummified bastard who was happily skipping inside the agency.
"ah! atsushi-kun! i was looking for you" dazai singsonged, approaching the other male with hands in his pockets.
atsushi stopped pacing and turned to him, he remained quiet. dazai cocked his head to the side, "is something wrong?"
"h-huh—" he stuttered, a bit confused, "ah, erm, it's nothing." atsushi showed off a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
dazai remained still, looking at him dead in the eyes, "doesn't look like it, atsushi-kun!" he said with his faux lively voice, it was terrifying.
atsushi sighed, feeling more defeated than he was before, "i'm going to meet, gin." he explained, "i'm… nervous" he winced.
his mentor sat down on his seat, his chin propped up on his hand. "don't be, i watched her grow up. i'm sure she likes you," he assured the younger one.
"haven't we met them before?" kunikida questioned.
"but it doesn't count!" the weretiger objected, "we were literally kil—" he was cut off when haruno entered the agency.
"atsushi-kun?" she called out to him, successfully catching their attention. "someone's looking for you." she smiled and moved to the side for the guest to enter.
the guest in her full glory entered the agency, her flowy dress complimented their figure perfectly. gin akutagawa was the epitome of beauty and she never failed to live up to the title.
"nakajima-san?" she said, their hands were resting in front of her dress.
"atsushi!" the man himself yelled, the color of his face drained when he realized what he had just done., "no, i mean, call me atsushi."
the mafioso was trying to hold back their laughter, she coughed. "ah yes, jinko-san. can i borrow you for a moment?"
atsushi gulped but nodded, he followed her outside the hallway of the agency. "are you free today, atsushi?"
oh no.
he was going to get the shovel talk, wouldn't he?
might as well prepare his grave, too.
right next to oda's. too far? aight.
"ah, yes. i'm free."
gin narrowed their eyes at him, "you're aware that…" her words started to become muffled in atsushi's head, it was as if his head buffered out of fear from what gin was about to say.
"atsushi?" they snapped her fingers to catch his attention. atsushi shook his head, going back to reality. "oh, sorry. i might've spaced out, can you repeat it?"
gin giggled, "you're aware that my brother's birthday is next week, right?"
"yeah, i do. i'm planning to surprise him actually" he sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck.
the mafioso grinned, "great!' she grabbed his wrists, "let's go!'
atsushi managed to let out an embarrassing yelp as he was led (dragged) outside the agency. "so, i've been thinking what party he should get? help me think of ideas!" they said. atsushi voiced out his thoughts while being dragged to different stores as gin was busy buying supplies.
they passed by a shop that sold mirrors and gin couldn't help but burst out a laugh, atsushi gave her a confused look.
"it's just—" she chuckled, "my brother used to talk to himself in the mirror for months since he had planned on confessing to you. "
"atsushi, the sunset is a mere commoner to your beautiful eyes, the way it gleams under the sunlight was mesmerizing. i would like nothing more than to spend my life drowning in those colorful hues. "
gin mocked their brother, even going as far as imitating his gruff voice. atsushi seriously didn't know if he should feel flattered or embarrassed that his boyfriend came up with something like that, he was glad, relieved even that akutagawa didn't continue his plan or else the weretiger would've rejected him on the spot.
he was kidding, of course, but he was seriously considering it. though, it was romantic. crimson spread on his cheeks, it was working on him because he was down that bad.
gin laughed at his reaction, "it was so cheesy but it still could've worked on you."
atsushi ignored her comment to spare himself from the embarrassment. they had agreed on a simple garden party but when they passed by chuuya at the mall (holding suspiciously a bag of bandages), he criticised their decision and told them to make it a cocktail party instead.
he would be the one paying so they went ahead and brought the things they needed. thankfully that day, he didn't receive any calls because he was seriously enjoying the day with his soon to be(??) sister-in-law dropped him off at the agency where his boyfriend was waiting. kunikida and the other members, on the other hand, were wearily watching the moves of the mafioso. just in case, he lashes out.
"how did it go?" akutagawa asked as he approached him, his hands automatically reaching out for atsushi's.
the younger one smiled at him, "it was great! your sister is so fun to be with."
the mafioso returned the smile and pecked the back of his hand, "good to hear love."
atsushi flushed red, akutagawa did it right in front of the other agency members and he didn't even bat an eyelash. "come on, let's go" the ravenette lightly tugged his wrists and led him outside the agency.
he spent the following days preparing for the birthday party, it was fun. agency and mafia members would show up here and there and they'll help him. even dazai said he'll pay for the party, which was really because he shares a bank account with a certain mafia executive.
the day arrived and he had a plan and he was determined to achieve it. the first thing he did after waking up was call his boyfriend. the phone rang twice, as atsushi waited for the other to answer with adrenaline in his veins.
"what?" akutagawa answered gruffly with an unnecessary harshness in his voice.
"good morning to you too, ryuu" atsushi replied sassily.
"ah, it's you" atsushi could hear some ruffling on the other side, probably akutagawa sitting up. he could imagine his boyfriend staring into space as he was collecting his consciousness.
"are you still there?" the detective asked when the line became quiet.
"hmmm."
"any plans for today?"
"nhmmm."
"you sure?"
"hmmm."
atsushi snorted, his boyfriend was still clearly out of it. "of course, you have! it's your birthday, you idiot."
"it is?" akutagawa asked in sheer confusion.
"yes! happy birthday, love! i'll be there soon."
"thanks, but—" before he could even reply, atsushi ended the call. he was for sure going to get scolded by his lover about it but he didn't care.
he got up and got dressed for the special day. instead of his casual attire, he wore a casual knitted sweater with a pair of jeans. he loved wearing comfortable clothes but akutagawa loved it more.
he wasted no time, he made the run for it. his boyfriend's penthouse was far from the agency but he didn't care. he was a tiger after all. he knocked on the door as if his life depended on it.
he heard a deep groan from the inside, it was very much likely that akutagawa hadn't gotten up yet. the door flung open and even before the weretiger could speak, a body draped over him and pulled him inside.
he felt akutagawa's lips brush against his cheeks. the mafioso gave the other a quick peck on the lips before detaching himself. "now that you're here, i can go back to sleep."
"ryuu!" atsushi whined in annoyance, "i didn't get dressed for nothing, you know!"
the ravenette sank back on the sheets, "get undressed then." he said bluntly.
atsushi flushed, "what—" he stuttered.
"no, i mean, get changed and cuddle me," akutagawa explained, sighing deeply as he relaxed on the bed.
so the weretiger did.
he changed out of his outfit against his own will (it wasn't). akutagawa had several oversized clothing, mainly because atsushi loved to steal his clothes and apparently the oversized ones were his favorite.
the soft material was pleasant against his skin. his lover smiled when he saw his figure. "now come here," he said as he reached out for atsushi's waist, pulling him on the bed.
they spent the rest of the day tangled in each other's arms, they couldn't care less about what was happening around them. 5 pm rolled around the corner, making atsushi stand up in a panic. shit, the plan.
akutagawa gazed up at him from his seat on the bed, eyes half-lidded as he was reading a book, "what's the matter?"
"i made reservations for us at 7 pm." the detective replied almost immediately, it was the best excuse he could come up with at that moment.
akutagawa glanced at him, he set the book down on the nightstand. "i'll get dressed and you should too. we'll leave in an hour."
atsushi's clothes were neatly folded at a table, courtesy of his boyfriend. he slipped back into his comfortable attire, it was warm.
he had to physically pull away from akutagawa the vampiric victorian clothes his boyfriend always wore. he was forced to wear a semi-formal outfit. a pair of pants and a long-sleeved polo.
atsushi felt a little underdressed so he wore a coat from akutagawa's wardrobe. "how do i look?" he turned to his boyfriend after adding a final touch.
"absolutely perfect" the latter grinned.
"you should smile more, ryuu" atsushi commented, he admired his boyfriend's smile. it was rare and only when he was around him.
"stay by my side and i'll promise you, my smile will never falter."
fuck.
akutagawa absolutely knows how to make his heart flutter. his cheeks felt warm, he was aware of the effect his lover has on him. the mafioso smirked, proud of himself for what he had done.
they left the penthouse with an hour to spare. deciding to kill some time, they walked around the city, visiting every store as possible. time passed by quicker than they thought it would.
thankfully, they made it in time. the restaurant was a fancy, slightly dimmed delicacy that stood in all of its glory. it served fine dining at an inexpensive price which is why they loved it.
not that akutagawa couldn't afford to go to even fancier restaurants but it was atsushi who insisted that they should save money instead of spending them on a one time meal.
they got seated at a table in the corner of the restaurant. atsushi requested it when he reserved it so that they could have a bit more privacy and mainly because his boyfriend is akutagawa, an extremely dangerous mafioso.
feeling fancy that day, they ordered steak with wine. the waiter, although had seen them multiple times in their restaurant, was afraid at the sight of the mafioso.
"lovely, isn't it?" atsushi sighed in satisfaction, leaning back on his seat.
"of course" akutagawa maintained eye contact with him while he drank the glass of water that was served first.
atsushi ignored his comment and the light blush that made another appearance on his cheeks. they talked for a bit as they waited for their meals. it came soon enough and they already dug in the food.
"hey, ryuu. this is my birthday gift for you" he handed over a velvet box from his pocket.
akutagawa reached for it out of curiosity and there it was, a silver ring with an infinity symbol in the middle "it's a promise ring," he smiled.
the detective took the box from the latter's hand and grabbed the ring. he swiftly managed to insert the ring on his left ring finger.
akutagawa coughed, covering his cheeks with his unoccupied hand, "it's cute, jinko. where's yours?"
"i already wore it.'' atsushi raised his left hand, the mafioso caught a glimpse of his cheeks becoming a deeper shade of red.
the night continued as per usual, they finished their dinner and the mafioso already wanted to go home but his boyfriend thought otherwise.
"love" atsushi called for his boyfriend's attention, "i'm sorry but dazai-san told me to buy some crabs and bring them to their house."
"what the genuine fuck" akutagawa thought to himself, "crabs?" he asked.
"yeah, apparently he and chuuya would have a camping date and they'll cook crabs but you know dazai-san, he forgot about it and was too lazy to go out and buy some."
akutagawa chuckled, knowing full well that his former mentor would get an earful from his husband. "i'll come with you so let's get this over with."
they got the agenda of the day done and went immediately on their way to their colleagues' home. it was dark which was reasonable since the house was standing at the border of yokohama far from the center of the city.
akutagawa activated his ability just in case, feeling that something was off when they arrived and the house's lights were off.
"maybe they are in the backyard," atsushi said as if he read his mind.
they leisurely walked to the back of the house and were met with an empty yard. "are you sure we're in the right place?" akutagawa whispered to his boyfriend.
out of thin air, their colleagues started to appear with a banner above their heads. "happy birthday, akutagawa!"
they exclaimed happily. it has been three years since their truce and everyone had started to be close to their (former) enemy organization.
akutagawa stood emotionless on his track, his eyes trailed over the people standing in front of him. the others became silent, anticipating his reaction and then he broke into a smile that became a full-on laugh.
the others cheered, relieved that he liked the surprise. his sister walked up to him with a cake in hand, "make your wish" akutagawa rolled his eyes at the embarrassment his sister just inflicted but did what he was told. he thought of a wish and then blew the candle, they all cheered once more.
they greeted him and separated into small groups. he could've never felt much happier than he did that day.
"so… what do you think?" atsushi asked expectantly, his eyes were gleaming even brighter than the reflection of the moon above them.
as a reply, he cupped atsushi's cheeks with his and leaned in. he pressed his lips against atsushi's. the other reciprocated almost immediately. he rested his arms on the mafioso's shoulder and pulled him closer.
they broke the kiss and stared into each other's eyes, mirroring the lovesick look both of them had.
"absolutely perfect,"
