The Only Audience That Matters

Summary:

Sun and Moon are expecting their pre-aerial-performance parts and service visit to be as simple as a check-up. Instead, they get a shocking but pleasant surprise when they're finally able to see each other face to face.

Chapter 1: Performance Of A Lifetime

Chapter Text

No one had explained to them, when they’d gone to parts and service, exactly what it was they were planning on doing. They’d assumed, considering their performance was coming up later that day, that it was just some routine maintenance to make sure their body was properly calibrated and their aerial performance programming was up to date.

But now, as Moon was staring directly at Sun in a separate body, both still hooked up to wires and only having barely woken up but so very alert to the presence of the other, he’s suddenly aware that Fazbear Entertainment had other plans for the visit.

They’re both silent for a moment, eyes wandering to look over each other and if either could breath, it’d be caught in their throat.

Sun reaches out toward him slowly, weary but curious and excited, and Moon mirrors him until their fingers brush together and a sweet gasp leaves Sun’s voice box at the contact.

“N-Nightlight?...” he whispers out, trying to pull Moon’s hand closer despite the wires plugged into them keeping them in place.

Moon lets out a little huff, embarrassment racing into his servos at the pet name but is more than happy to lace their fingers together just a bit tighter.

They’re exploring the other’s movements gently, mirroring each other with their hands, letting out little giggles at the pure surrealism of the situation before Sun makes a very astute observation.

“You’re short.”

Moon’s face contorts into an offended glare.

“I- I mean shorter! Shorter than me, now, us, shorter than we were-” Sun is rambling and trying to take his own foot out of his mouth, but the unshakeable giggling in between every word is making it worse rather than better.

Moon is glaring in both amusement and mild frustration while Sun keeps going, but both are swept into silence when something shifts behind Moon and lets out a soft jingling noise.

Sun’s eyes trail to stare behind Moon and he lets out a gasp, pointing erratically at the area. Moon follows suit, glancing behind himself gingerly as to not shake any wires loose, and groans at the new discovery.

There is a tail, attached very firmly to him, and a little bell is jingling away quietly with every swish, swivel and shake the thing makes, completely involuntarily mind you.

“Aaaaw, you’re so cute! It’s like you’re a little-”

“I’m physically begging you not to finish that sentence.”

“-kitten!”

Moon lets out another groan of embarrassment, covering his face with his one free hand while Sun excitedly grips harder onto the other.

He grumbles, wiping his hand down his face and takes a moment to fully look over Sun, scowling a bit when he notices that Sun is, in fact, at least a few feet taller than he is now, and has a severe absence of a tail to poke fun at.

“Let’s… Not focus on that right now. What time is it? Are you hooked back up to the internet yet? Can you see a clock at the very least?”

Sun hums, closing his eyes for a moment before letting out a panicked gasp. “We’ve been out for so long, our show starts in fifteen minutes!” He’s trying his best not to start moving around and finnicking in his anxiety, weary of the chords still possibly making downloads and changes to their code, but the way he grits his teeth tells Moon exactly how nervous he is.

“Hey, look at me for a moment, Buttercup.”

Sun glances up to him, shaking in his spot, gripping harshly at Moon's hand.

“They aren’t going to let us miss our show, okay? And if they do, we aren’t going to be in any trouble. Promise.” he lets out a soothing hum, wrestling his hand in Sun’s to wrap his pinkie around the other’s. The motion makes them both giddy and nervous, new to this… change in their usual physical affection.

Sun seems to calm at least slightly, his joints no longer stiff and shaking with exertion.

It’s then that their Parts and Service worker, Timber, finally comes into the download room. “Oh! Sorry boys, I didn’t realize you were awake already, must’ve accidentally kicked on the boot up sequence. That’s good though! Your show is soon, let’s get you boys unhooked and up to your balcony!”

She’s pulling really insistently at the wires protruding from their connective ports, rambling so fast neither has the time to get a word in until Sun finally snaps out a quick “Excuse me!!”

She stops, dropping the wire she’s handling. “Oh! Yeah, what's up Sunny?”

Sun huffs, pointing toward Moon. “Which of us is performing, exactly?”

Timber blinks, looking between the two in confusion. “Both of you.”

Both of their eyes light up in excitement and curiosity, glancing between themselves.

“Together?” Moon asks softly, looking down at her, hopeful for an answer that confirms this little fantasy he’s pulled together in just a few seconds.

“Uhm. Yeah! Did no one tell you guys? You’ve been practicing with a partner for the past couple weeks, I kinda thought someone would’ve told you why.”

They both shake their heads, glancing toward each other again. Sun is wearing a massive grin, tapping his hands together excitedly and if Moon weren’t so enraptured and excited by their upcoming show together, the jingling from his rapidly swaying tail might be annoying.

A walkie on their service worker’s belt lets out a static blare before erupting into words. “We need Sun and Moon on stage, they’re five til.”

She scrambles to get the last of their chords unplugged, rushing them toward their elevator up to the balcony area of their performance stage. “Okay! No time for small talk, we can chat more about your new upgrades later! Love you both, get out there!”

Once again, they don’t get in a word while they’re shoved out of the elevator, their wires and silks set up already, and the announcement being made for their arrival.

Sun is panicking at the sudden change in pace, and Moon gently grabs his hands, grinning at him in pure excitement as his hook plants itself firmly into the notch on his back.

“Ready?”

Sun grips his hands tightly, a nervous smile building on his face as he calls his own hook. “As long as you are…”

Moon lets out a giggle, pulling him down and planting a kiss between his eyes before letting go of his hands and running onto and then off the balcony at the drop of the music.

Sun watches in awe, anxiety bubbling into a giddiness that makes his eyes light up. He takes a moment to steel himself, and throws himself after Moon, falling effortlessly after the other.

There’s a metaphor there somewhere that Sun is sure Moon would be better at deciphering, but right now his own mind is too focused on the way Moon catches his hands and pulls him close as they spin together to the music.

Dancing through the air together in the same ways they’d practiced with the human performers who had, unbeknownst to them, been stand-ins for each other, Sun had the realization he wasn’t focused on the audience for once, not worried about how they eyed him or how they might perceive any small mistake. No, right now, the only eyes on him that he’s aware of are Moon’s, watching him in excitement and with just the softest notes of warmth that made his processor heat up and fans stutter in response.

This, he decided, was the most fun he’d ever had performing.
