Chapter 1: First Sight

Chapter Text

It was Saturday night, another night of Mew following his friends to a bar. He had agreed to go out with them only for a couple of times before, throughout the first month of his Master’s degree study. It should not be a problem for him since he lives alone in a decent apartment, but he would always go to his parents’ house during the weekends.

This time, Singto insisted for him to come along. Bachelor’s degree students had just returned from their semester break and Singto was so eager to introduce his boyfriend to both Mew and Mild. But now, the one who had been the most excited was yet to be seen, only his friends, who were patiently waiting for him after securing themselves a table.

“Hey,” Mild gave Mew’s arm a nudge with his elbow. “Isn’t that the boy on our university’s banner?”

Mew’s gaze turned from his drink to Mild and the said guy jutted his chin to a certain direction. It was a much larger table, occupied by a group of boys around their age, or probably younger.

“And which one are you talking about?”

“Are you being serious?” Mild threw an incredulous look at Mew.

“What? It’s quite dark in here,” Mew uttered in defence.

“Look properly,” Mild chided. “He should be the most good-looking one since his face is all over the university’s ads.”

Mew took the time to have a longer look at each of them. There were about seven to eight of them, and then, there was this one boy.

Now that’s the familiar face he could finally recognized.

Looks skinny in his sweatshirt, but has a round face. His cheeks seem squishy, but not chubby. His slender finger would delicately move the strands of his black silky hair away from covering his eyes, revealing more of his thick eyebrows. His nose is sharp and pointy, and his lips… his pink, full lips would stretch into a dazzling smile as he listened to his friends’ chatter.

Mew had never paid attention to that face before, but now that he did, he would describe the boy as handsome, and yet… pretty? But for sure, he seemed arrogant. Even though he was smiling, it just seemed half-hearted. He didn’t really talk much either. Somehow, it felt like he didn’t really want to be there.

Mew didn’t know how long he had been staring, but the moment the boy’s eyes shifted to him, he felt himself snapping back to reality.

“Shit,” Mild cursed under his breath as he quickly looked away. It would be really awkward if he were to get caught staring-

“What are you doing?!” Mild yelled in a whisper, eyes bulging out at Mew who was still staring at the boy.

None of them looked away just yet, only silently locking their eyes with each other. Now he could say that the boy has pretty eyes too, even from afar.

“What?” Mew responded to Mild without averting his eyes from the boy. “You told me to look properly, right?”

“Are you stupid?!” Mild turned to the full table again to make sure his friend is still in his right mind. “You’d look like you’re checking him out-”

To his dismay, the other party was also staring back with an unreadable expression. He turned to Mew again, then back to the boy. “What is this?” Mild asked the man beside him. “Are you two checking each other out or what?!”

Right then, Mew could see that the boy’s attention was back to his friends, apparently getting called to join their conversation again.

“I thought it’d be awkward to make eye contact with him,” Mild said. “And there you go, keeping your stare on him like that, looking like a completely creepy stalker.”

“Is he an omega?” Mew spoke up, flatly ignoring Mild’s nagging.

Mild, who is used to it and was not even a tiny bit offended by it, shrugged his shoulders. “I can’t tell for sure, but he’s pretty good-looking,” he stated his honest opinion before turning back to his friend. “Not gonna take a chance and talk to him?” he prodded, raising his eyebrows up and down.

Mew snorted a laugh. “Can’t you see all of those alphas around him? They look just like his bodyguards.” He wasn’t sure if all of them are alphas, but most of them appeared to be so.

Mild chuckled, turning to look at the boys again, but a familiar figure caught his eyes in the middle. He took another look at the person and surely, it was Singto.

“Oh, he’s here,” he uttered, making Mew followed the direction of his gaze.

Singto was evidently walking towards that one table which is not theirs, the very same table they had been observing before, though he was also craning his neck to look around the bar at the same time. Mild had a thought Singto was looking for them, so he raised his hand, waving it hard until Singto noticed him.

Singto halted his steps once their eyes met, but he raised his hand back, mouthing for them to wait before pointing to the other table. Then, with hastened footsteps, he really went to greet the boys, or to be exact, patting one of them on the shoulder, making the said person gasp in delightful surprise and stand up before pulling him into a tight hug.

“That is his boyfriend?” Mild was also surprised to see it.

Mew couldn’t help letting out a small laugh as he found it funny. “Wow, what were the odds?”

They remained watching Singto and his lover exchange kisses and most likely telling how much they missed each other in between, whilist the rest of the boys sitting there casually threw their teasing remarks.

Mew’s eyes landed on that person again. The handsome boy was lightly clapping his hands while looking at the lovers with a fond gaze and a lovely smile.

Cute.

“I’ve never seen him so happy before,” Mild whispered to Mew, grabbing his attention again.

“You should understand. His boyfriend’s hometown is far from here,” Mew reminded the latter.

Both of them had only known Singto for a little more than a month after all, unlike the two of them who had known each other since Mild moved to Mew’s neighbourhood when they were still in high school. Now, all three of them have just started their first year as Master’s degree students.

A while later, Singto took his lover by the hand to their table before giving him a proper introduction.

“Guys, this is Krist, my boyfriend. And babe, this is Mew and Mild.”

They said their hellos. The couple took a seat and began to have small talks with them to get to know each other and in between those conversations, Mew’s gaze kept diverting to the boy he saw earlier.

“Your teammates are all alphas and betas?” Mew asked Krist after knowing that he was actually hanging out with his football club members.

“Most of us are alphas. And some are betas, like me.”

“Of course…” Mew smiled. He felt kind of stupid to ask something so obvious.

It is something that goes without saying actually. Omegas are a minority in the primary male genders. Even with their majority in the female genders, it was pretty rare for omegas to join a sports club because they are quite weak compared to alphas and betas, and also because of their heats. That is why every kind of sports is only divided into two categories based on the primary genders, which are males and females.

“Why did you ask?” Krist was curious since he did not usually get questions like that.

“Oh.” Mew shook his head. “It’s nothin-”

“It’s because not all of them look like alphas,” Mild interrupted, bringing out his gossipy side. "Or even betas,” he added.

Both Singto and Krist were confused for a moment, but after scanning his previous table, Krist came to know what was meant by Mild.

“Ah, yes, there’s one omega actually.”

Mew perked up at Krist’s statement. “Omega?”

Krist nodded his head towards a particular someone in the group of football members. Mew turned to look in the same direction and everything just makes sense now.

“He is our assistant manager. Really tall, but really cute. He is quite good at football too, would sometimes help us during training. Even if his legs are thin, he really can kick a ball,” Krist explained with honest compliments.

“He’s really cute,” Singto added. “I want to squish those cheeks every time I see him.”

Mew unconsciously nodded his head, as if he was agreeing, ignoring the lovers’ playful bickering after Singto’s remark. He was still in his own mind as he kept staring at the boy. He just found it to be quite daring for an omega to hang out with all of the alphas around him. Maybe that is why the boy needed to be seen as bold as the alphas, but Mew also thought that he could at least look a little friendly.

“Omega, huh?” Mild muttered to Mew. “No wonder you two were flirting with each other.”

“What did you say?” Singto didn’t catch it because of the loud noise.

“Nothing,” Mew quickly shook his head with a small smile. He then gave a look to Mild and the latter understood it right away.

Mew didn’t come to the bar to find someone. No, scratch that. Mew is just not really looking for someone right now.
