Work Text:
The bell for lunchtime rang loudly throughout the school grounds, and Sasha wasted no time in slinging her backpack over her shoulder and racing out of the classroom to join the swarm of students rushing in the hallway.
Finally , it was her favourite time of the day — lunchtime! For an hour, she could indulge the sloppy and over-priced food that the cafeteria sold with her friends. She wondered if they’d use ham or steak on their burgers that day, and if the cheese would taste oddly similar to plastic again. She hoped not, but she’d probably still eat it either way, and ask the people sitting at her table if they still wanted to eat theirs.
Hunger brewed and grumbled in the pits of her stomach. She hugged her books closer to her chest and quickly rounded the last corner to the cafeteria.
However, her eyes were cloudy with thoughts of delicious food, and she failed to see the other girl walking out from behind the same corner as her.
Suddenly, the floor slipped out from underneath her feet and the books in her arms went flying. A loud yelp tore from her throat as she fell backwards and hit the cold marble floor.
“Oh, I’m sorry! Are you okay?”
Sasha groaned and shook her head. “Um, no,” she said, with her eyes screwed close.
The world was still spinning around her when she opened her eyes, where she found the girl extending an arm out towards her. What the hell was even happening?
“Here,” the girl said. Hesitantly, Sasha took the girl’s hand, and the girl lifted her from the floor and onto her feet with ease.
“Thanks,” Sasha murmured to the floor, rubbing the side of her pounding head with her hand. The pain was killing her.
“Do you want me to walk you to the nurse?” asked the girl, staring curiously at Sasha.
Sasha’s mouth parted to speak, before her eyes settled on the girl. Instantly, her jaw split open and her eyebrows shot up.
The girl was beautiful . There was no other word to describe it; to describe her . She was like a dark, majestic goddess that had just fallen directly out of heaven.
She had two bundles of her black hair tied at the back of her head, and a fringe that fell to just above her eyebrows. Her coated lashes and thick outline of eyeliner almost completely hid her stormy eyes, where she stared icily at Sasha. Her dark clothes brought out the paleness of her skin, where chains of necklaces and silver earrings hung from.
Sasha was far too busy dragging her eyes along the lines of the girl’s body to notice the weird stare that she was receiving.
“Um, is there something wrong?”
She jumped and looked back up at the girl, who seemed more than unimpressed. Her cheeks lit up with heat.
“S-Sorry!” she stammered, her voice wavering. “I, um, just think that you’re sort of… well, really pretty.”
Damn it! She looked like an absolute idiot right now. Here she was, in the presence of this goddess , and she was blushing and stuttering like a schoolgirl. She wished that the floor would split open, so that she could sink through its cracks. At least then she wouldn’t have the chance to keep embarrassing herself and ruining any slight chance that she had with this girl.
But to her surprise, the other girl laughed . Sasha blinked at her dumbly.
“Thank you,” the girl chuckled, and Sasha thought she noticed the faintest flush of pink on her cheeks. “That’s kinda surprising to hear. Usually people are too intimidated by me and my clothes and stuff to compliment me.”
Sasha smiled nervously. “Oh,” she breathed. “Well, um, I can sorta see why. I mean, you’re like a literal model.”
The girl chuckled warmly again, and Sasha’s stomach flooded with butterflies that fluttered their wings all at once. Even her laugh was beautiful.
“Thank you, again. You’re really pretty as well. What’s your name?”
Sasha batted her eyes at the girl, as if she couldn’t believe what was coming out of her mouth. “M-My name? Oh, um, Sasha.”
“I’m Mikasa,” the girl said with her maroon lips curled into a smile. She looked like she was about to say something else when a boy with blonde hair and round blue eyes came running up to her side.
“Mikasa! There you are,” the boy panted, pushing up his glasses by their bridge. “Eren and I have been waiting for you for ages! Where’ve you been?”
Mikasa didn’t take her eyes off of Sasha as she spoke, “Bumped into this girl. Sasha, this is Armin.”
Sasha tipped her head politely toward Armin with a thin smile on her lips.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Armin said quickly, smiling back at Sasha. “I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.” He gave Mikasa a speculating stare, and Sasha wondered if he was seeing something that she couldn’t.
“Say, um, just meet Eren and I in the line for food in the cafeteria, then.” He suddenly seemed squeamish as his eyes darted between both Sasha and Mikasa. “Uh, nice to meet you Sasha!” he blurted, before turning on his heel and running back into the crowd of passing students.
Mikasa rolled her dark eyes, but there was a flicker of amusement on her face. “Well, I should probably get back to those two,” she said promptly, nodding curtly toward where Armin and another boy stood, frantically whispering to each other and pointing at them. When they noticed Sasha staring at them, however, they waved at her hurriedly before dashing back into the doors of the cafeteria. Mikasa scoffed and shook her head with the same hint of amusement in her eyes.
“Yeah. Um, they seem cool,” Sasha said weakly, trying to hide her disappointment that her time with Mikasa was drawing to a close.
Mikasa hummed thoughtfully, turning her head back towards Sasha. “Yeah. Well, it was nice meeting you, Sasha. Hopefully I’ll catch you again sometime?”
Sasha bit down on her bottom lip. She couldn’t let this be the last time that she talked to this girl! No way! She hurriedly racked her brain for ideas to make the girl stay.
“Actually, uh, do you think I could have your number?” she spurted. “I’d like to talk to you again, sometime.”
“Sure,” Mikasa responded, flashing Sasha a kind smile. “I can type my number into your phone?”
Sasha nodded and eagerly snatched her phone from her pocket. She handed it to Mikasa with a broad smile plastered across her face, and she watched as Mikasa’s painted nails worked across her phone screen.
“Here,” Mikasa said, offering Sasha her phone back. “Feel free to text me whenever. I usually have a lot of spare time on my hands, anyway.”
“Sure,” said Sasha brightly.
“Talk to you later, then,” Mikasa said, sending Sasha a grin before she walked back into the mini crowds of students.
Sasha sighed dazedly as she watched her go. Her heart was beating like a drum in her chest, and her cheeks were still flushed bright pink.
Her new favourite part of the day would definitely be spending the entire night texting Mikasa and learning as much as she could about the mysterious girl. Then, if it all goes well, she could think about possibly asking her out the next day. Maybe.
