Something's Wrong

Summary:

Togepi thought she and her trainer would be friends forever. But things change, and for the worse.

Work Text:

A Togepi was wandering throughout the Cottonsedge Prairie. She was lost, scared, looking for someone to treat her with kindness. She searched desperately as she hid in the tall grass. Then, suddenly, a piece of honey was thrown close in front of her. She was startled for a moment, but the dazzling food eventually caught her attention. She slowly approached it and ate it peacefully.

The Togepi looked up and saw someone. They were crouching, hand raised in the air, aiming a Poke Ball directly at her. Instead of becoming frightened, she ran up to the person in curiosity. They lowered their hand cautiously in response, looking at the Pokemon in confusion. She looked back at them: Half of their face was covered with golden blonde hair, a yellow and blue hat snugly fit on their head, and they wore specialized clothing. She didn’t know what any of it was or what it meant, but she smiled at the sight of it. She chirped happily.

The person chuckled, shaking their head. “...You’re too sweet.”

They lightly tapped the Poke Ball on Togepi's head, and the Pokemon went inside the ball. It didn’t even shake once before the puff of smoke signaled it’s capture. The person let her out immediately afterwards, and her happiness hadn’t faded. She nudged the person's leg and cooed happily.

The person stroked her head gently. “I’m Volo, and I’ll be your wielder for now on. But, I’m your friend first and foremost, alright?”

The Togepi beamed. She found a friend.

Togepi playfully chased around her newest friend, Gible, as Volo watched. She had been with him for a month or so now, and she had seen so many new things. Volo brought her almost everywhere and rarely kept her in her Poke Ball. He gave Togepi her favorite foods and protected her from the scariest of foes. She had fun with Gible, too, though he was still getting used to Volo at this point and was a bit hesitant to run around.

While she was resting from chasing Gible, she spotted a wild Pokemon trying to bite at Volo’s feet. She immediately went after it, albeit a bit carelessly. She tackled it to the ground, squirming out of her grasp and running away soon after. She looked at her wielder and checked for injury.

Volo noticed what had happened and sat down to talk with his companion. He glanced down at Togepi.

“You… protected me?” Volo muttered, a bit surprised.

Togepi smiled and nodded.

“Thank you!” Volo said, petting Togepi lovingly.

Then, Togepi began to glow. Volo gasped as he watched her evolve.

She turned into a Togetic. She flapped her wings excitedly and flew around in the air. Both Volo and Gible watched in awe.

“You evolved!” Volo exclaimed. His eyes sparkled in wonder.

She chirped in pure joy, going in to nuzzle her wielder’s cheek.

He took off his backpack and searched through it.

“Well… Now that you’ve evolved into Togetic, you can reach your final form.”

He brought out a yellowish stone that shone in the sunlight. It piqued Togetic’s interest. She reached out her arms and grabbed onto it. She flew back to the ground with the stone in hand. Volo smiled and waited. Togetic was enveloped in light again, and she evolved into a Togekiss.

“Now you’re a Togekiss!”

Togekiss cried out in surprise. She took a moment to process her newest form, smiling afterward. She couldn’t have been happier.

Togekiss had been out to get supplies and returned to something she didn’t understand or know. All of her Pokemon friends were in their Poke Balls off to the side unlike earlier, and Volo sat with his back facing her. They were all camping out for the night in the harsh Alabaster Icelands, and it was near freezing. A fire sparked and crackled as Volo mumbled something under his breath. He was leaned over, arms crossed as he gripped onto them tightly.

Togekiss dropped the bag of items she was carrying in her mouth and slowly approached her wielder. What he was saying became clearer.

“...They’ll reach Arceus first. They won’t let me recreate this world, I know it. I can’t act like this anymore, I need to do something– before my story ends and I become as shut-in as my aunt, that old bi–”

Togekiss called out to Volo. He jolted his body around at the sudden noise, not relaxed in the slightest. He looked crazed and his hands shook as he let go of his arms.

“...Oh. It’s just you.” He sighed, turning around soon after.

Togekiss was confused and became fearful for her wielder. She flew to his side, rubbing up against it with her face in an attempt to soothe him. She murmured, as if trying to reason her concern. Volo pushed her away and she cried out in shock.

“I can’t deal with you right now!” He yelled out.

Togekiss sniffled. She didn’t understand what was going on. All she knew was that she felt the distress coming from Volo, and it was starting to give her anxiety.

What was happening?

Togekiss couldn’t recognize Volo anymore. He acted so differently and could barely hold a smile in front of others. He always seemed alert, never relaxing even when alone. He used to be a lot more kind and at ease, but now he was becoming more and more vile. He didn’t treat her and the rest of his Pokemon with genuine kindness anymore and was dismissive of them all. She was still getting items for everyone at night and always returned to see Volo sobbing at the temporary campsite, him rambling on and on about how unfair the world is and the Legendary beasts he wanted to control to solve it. He always mentioned Giratina, and how the both of them would destroy the world.

She couldn’t handle seeing someone so close to her spiral into madness anymore. She felt the urge to tell him that something was wrong with him. Surely he didn’t know, right? Surely telling that to him would allow him to get better, right?

Togekiss flew off to a campsite where she knew she needed something from. There was always a man in a long white coat who carried a thick notebook, and he was there even in the dead of night. He scribbled in the book when she came around at one point, as if writing down her behavior. She found him searching around the area, taking notes on another Pokemon. As soon as he spotted her, he sporadically and clumsily flipped through pages. He stopped on a page that had a drawing that looked like herself, and she knew what to do.

She flew down and ripped the page out of the book. The person called at her to bring it back, but she couldn’t. She carried it in her mouth, bringing it back to the camp her wielder put together that night. Volo hadn’t even noticed she left and sat completely still, most likely thinking. She nudged his back, too afraid to approach him otherwise.

He turned to her, glancing at the page she held. He forcibly took the page from her.

“What in the world is this?” He nearly hissed.

He read the contents of the page out loud.

“Togekiss, the Jubilee Pokemon… These Pokémon are never seen anywhere near conflict or turmoil. It’s rumored to grow dispirited if it is not with kind people…”

He looked at Togekiss. “...What are you trying to say?”

She slowly started to back away from him. His eyes widened when he realized.

“So I’m a problem to you now?” He growled.

She whimpered, backing off further.

He stood up and began to approach her, an edge in his voice as he spoke.

“I’m trying to help everyone, don’t you see?! I’m acting completely reasonable about how unfair this world is, and yet you seem to view me as some sort of psychopath, huh?”

Togekiss cried out again. She didn’t see Volo anymore, she only saw a stranger driven mad.

“I’ve been struggling to keep it together and I’ve gone a little insane, yes,” He suddenly grinned, laughing under his breath, “...More than a little, actually! Others like you are causing me to doubt myself when I’m fully correct. Is Giratina my only ally here? Are you even my friend anymore?!”

She screamed out, completely terrified. She wanted him to go, she didn’t want to be around him anymore.

“Oh shut up! I’m right and you’re wrong– you’re the problem here, Togekiss!” He yelled out.

He grabbed her Poke Ball, and she froze.

“Maybe you need to stay in your Poke Ball for now on.”
