Someone Who Gets Me

Summary:

Julie is shot into stardom when she posts a Tik Tok singing an original song. Now, she's got her second album coming out. She's tired and wants to go home after a live interview, but still has to got to a photo shoot right away. Then to top it off, her driver is retiring an intriguing guy in a cut off tee shows up to take his place.

Notes:

Hey! I have a new One Shot that will have multiple parts.

The song is Someone Who Gets Me by Beverley Mitchell. I'm well aware that it is a country song, but if you listen to it just imagine it's Julie's style instead.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Here to perform her first number one single, Someone Who Gets Me , Julie Molina!”

Julie stepped up to the microphone and prepared to sing. She was nervous, no doubt. She always was when singing live, but this was what she wanted to do, so she shook it off and took a deep breath.

I'm just a girl misunderstood, but hopin'

I'll find someone who lets me run wide open

Who doesn't try to change me

From who i'm meant to be

Someone who gets me

This was crazy. After she had lost her mom, she had stopped playing the piano and singing all together. After time and encouragement from her best friends, she was able to overcome it. And the one time she uploaded a video of herself singing this song on tik tok, it blew up. She wasn’t expecting anything like this, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity to team up with a record label and release an entire album that she had written.

I'm just a girl who laughs out loud when i'm nervous

Feel like the main attraction in the circus

When the lights go out i'm different

And all I want to see is

Someone who gets me

Someone who lets me be who I am, not who i'm not

And never gonna be

Whose heart will protect me

Someone who gets me

Julie had written this song after she had just broken up with her ex-boyfriend, Nick. They fit together before, but as their relationship went on, he seemed to not understand what she saw as the end goal of the relationship. He didn’t understand why she would want to tour around the world singing when he could “have a job to support both of us.” From that moment on, Julie knew it wasn’t the right fit.

I'm just a girl who cries sometimes for no reason

Been known to wear the wrong clothes for the season

Yeah, i'm a backseat driver

And i'm gonna drive 'em crazy

Someone who gets me

Someone who lets me be who I am, not who I'm not

And never gonna be

Who won't misdirect me

Someone who gets me

Julie just wanted someone who could love her for her and who she wanted to be. So, that’s what this song was about.

My life's not so ordinary

Sometimes sane and sometimes scary

Am I wrong for wanting someone so

Someone who gets me

Someone who lets me be who I am, not who i'm not

And never gonna be

Who won't misdirect me

Whose smile disconnects me

Whose heart will protect me

Someone who gets me

Someone who gets me

She finished singing, holding out the last note to draw in the effect. A noise sounded that indicated they went to commercial break.

“That was amazing!” Her best friend, Alex, told her as soon as she walked backstage.

“Like always,” Flynn, another best friend, chimed in.

Julie smiled her most affectionate smile. “Thanks guys.”

“You just have the interview once we come back from commercial and then we’re good to go,” Alex said.

“Thanks, manager Alex.”

“10 seconds to show!” One of the workers yelled throughout the studio.

Another sound went over the studio to indicate that the show was on air again.

“Welcome back, we’re here with Julie Molina, who just finished singing her first ever single, Someone Who Gets Me ,” The host said, gesturing to Julie, who was sitting in the chair across from him. “So, Julie, what’s it like being thrown into the limelight by having a viral video on Tik Tok?”

“It was pretty crazy,” Julie answered. “I wasn’t expecting the video to go viral, and I definitely wasn’t expecting that people would actually like the song.”

“So, Someone Who Gets Me has been out for a few years now, and you have a new album coming out, so why did you decide to sing that one today?”

“It’s the one most people are familiar with. It’s also got a remix that is on this new album.”

“That makes sense. Now, let’s ask the question everyone is wondering. Have you found that someone who gets you?” The host asked.

She wasn’t expecting that question. She sucked in a deep breath. "I haven't. I don't think I have time for it, really. I'm so busy that a relationship isn't what I need right now."

“That’s very mature of you.”

“Thanks.”

The host nodded, and looked towards the camera one last time. “Alright folks, that’s all we have time for today. Don’t forget to pre-order Julie’s new album, Angel , today!”

The sound rang throughout the studio, once again indicating that they were now off-air.

The host reached out to shake Julie’s hand, so she met in the middle. “Thanks for coming today, Julie,” He said.

“It’s always a pleasure to be here,” Julie replied. She liked coming to interviews like this. She really did, but today she had a headache. The kind that felt like someone was knocking you over the head over and over. So, she planned to go home and take a nap to try and relieve herself of it. Well, she had planned that until she saw her manager and best friend, Alex.

“You have a photoshoot in an hour, so you can get a snack or something and then your driver will take you there.”

“Oh great,” Julie said, rolling her eyes.

“Oh come on. You have to do it or else Andi will be all over me.”

“Can’t I just go home and sleep?” Julie asked though she already knew the answer.

“Sorry, busy lady, I can’t do that. If it helps, it’s only supposed to take about three hours,” Alex replied.

Julie groaned and rubbed her head. “Sometimes I wish that being a singer meant I only had to sing and not do all of this other stuff,” She laughed.

Julie was about to grab her bag to walk out when she saw Flynn coming up to her with Julie’s phone.

“Your dad called during the last segment. I think he’s tired of my voice,” Flyn said with a little laugh as she handed Julie her phone.

Julie took the phone from her and held it up to her ear.

“For the record, I didn’t get tired of Flynn. I was just wanting to talk to my daughter about how her day was going,” Her dad spoke through the phone.

Julie giggled. “Hi dad.”

“Hi Mija. How are you?”

“I’m good, dad. How are you?”

“Woah. You’re good? Is something wrong, Julie? You usually tell me all about your day when I ask you that.”

“Sorry, I’m just super tired and I have a pounding headache. I just got finished on The Steven Stetson Show, and now I have an hour before a photoshoot for a magazine.”

“I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. Take a couple of tylenol and maybe you’ll feel better. I can let you go to try and take a quick nap if you want?”

“No, it’s okay. I haven’t talked to you in a while. How’s work and Carlos?” Julie asked, though the pounding in her head seemed to get worse with every second she stayed standing. By this point, she had all of her stuff packed back up and she was heading to the car where her driver, Oliver, was waiting for her.

“Work is good. I’ve had photoshoots all day for the past three days and I’m a little drained, but I love my work. Carlos had a baseball game the other day and you won’t believe how good he is at it! Some rumors are going around saying that there’s going to be a college scout at one of his next games for him.” Her dad said, still rambling on while Julie climbed in the back of the dark vehicle. She softened a little bit, thinking about how proud she was of her brother. He’d always loved baseball and now he could potentially play it for a college team.

“That’s great, dad. I’m so glad Carlos gets to chase his dream like I do mine.”

It was silent on the other end for a bit before Julie’s dad spoke. “He told me the other day he plays for mom.”

Julie felt a lump in her throat. It was hard talking about her mom, even now years later. SHe held back tears as she said, “That’s why I do this. For Mom.”

Her dad sighed on the other end of the phone. “I miss more everyday.”

“Me too.”

It was silent on both ends of the phone call as they both tried to get their bearings.

“We’re here, Miss Molina,” Oliver told her as he stopped in front of the building where the photoshoot was going to be.

“I better go dad, I love you,” Julie said into the phone.

“I love you too, Mija,” He said as she hung up the phone.

Julie got out of the car and grabbed her bag to bring in. Oliver escorted her into the building since Alex and Flynn wouldn’t be coming until a little bit later.

“Thank you,” She told him after they had made it inside. Oliver just nodded and went back out the door. Julie took a deep breath as she pulled out her phone to text Flynn.

Please bring me tylenol.

Julie knew she would be here soon enough after she took care of her other duties. She looked around. She was alone, at least for now.

Julie sighed. She had told the host of the show that she didn’t have time for a relationship, and that was partly true. But that didn’t help the fact that she felt lonely. Her unnecessarily big house is so quiet when she’s home. The times when her best friends are busy and she’s not are super lonely. Sometimes she wished she could find someone. Some who gets her. Someone that can help her through those lonely times.

“Ah! Julie Molina! My star for today.”

Julie looked up from her hands that she hadn’t realized she was staring at. She smiled at the lady who told her to follow her.

She followed the lady down a hallway and into a room that had lights and a backdrop set up. It was relatively small, but there was a door to another room that Julie assumed to be a changing room if the clothing rack next to it was any indication.

The woman held out her hand. “I’m Jaimie, I’ll be your photographer today,” Julie reached out her hand and shook it before Jaimie pointed to another lady across the room that Julie hadn’t noticed before. “That’s my assistant and stylist, Sam.” Julie smiled and waved towards her, and she did the same back.

“I heard your manager and PA will be here soon, we can start with or without them. Your call,” Jaimie said.

“I’d rather wait until they got here, if that’s okay,” Julie answered. She wanted someone that she knew here before jumping into this, and she really wanted that tylenol.

“You can sit in the room across the hall to wait.”

“Thanks,” Julie said before departing to go sit down. She didn’t think it was going to be very long, but sitting down would be nice.

She sat down on the couch, and somehow she instantly felt better. It was super comfortable, and if she wasn’t careful she could probably fall asleep right here.

And that’s what she did. By accident of course, but it was the couch’s fault for being so comfortable. Next thing she knew, she was being shaken awake by Flynn.

“Julie! You fell asleep.”

Julie opened her eyes. Even groggy, she still felt the need to be sarcastic. “Thanks! I never would have known if you didn’t wake me up to tell me.”

She sat up from the couch and realized that Flynn wasn’t the only other one in the room. Behind her stood a young guy with an orange beanie and a cutoff tee. He looked intriguing if Julie was being honest, but she didn’t know what he was doing there, so she gave Flynn a questionable look.

“Oh yeah,” Flynn started. “Meet Luke, your new driver. He’s going to be around today so can meet him.”

“New driver?” Julie asked.

“Yeah,” Flynn answered.

“What about Oliver?”

“Oliver is retiring next month, remember?”

Now that Flynn said that, Julie remembered Oliver telling her that.

Julie stepped forward and reached out her hand to shake his, but he didn’t move. In fact, he seemed frozen… staring at Julie.

“Luke?” Julie asked, waving a hand in front of his face that seemed to wake him from his trance. He looked down at her outstretched hand. Julie saw his face go red for a second before he reached out to shake it as well. “I’m Julie, nice to meet you.”

“I’m Luke,” He said back. Julie giggled. She already knew that before, but his introduction was sweet.

Now that Julie thought about it, he looked different from any of the other drivers she’s ever had before. He was younger, not to mention that his outfit was a questionable choice for a professional driver, but Julie told herself he was probably going to dress differently when he actually started the job in a month.

“We better get started with this photoshoot if you ever want to go home,” Flynn said as she handed her a bag with the tylenol she had asked for. Julie nodded in thanks and also understanding.

Suddenly, Julie was excited for the next month. Julie got a good feeling about Luke, and she assumed it was going to be fun getting to know him.
