Finding Love

Summary:

Let's have some fluff since I posted angst. And someone asked for a fic about their pregnancy a while back, so hey, let's have Lorraine's middle of the night cravings.

Work Text:

Love is hard to find.

Lorraine can agree that much. It is hard to find, and even when finding it, it may not be right . But for her, the first person that she ever opened herself to happened to be the person that she was destined to marry.

She does not need her gift to see that.

She can see it with her own two eyes.

At the moment, a display of love is right in front of her. The clock beside her says that it’s barely 3am, but here he is, kicking his sneakers off. Ed sits the bag of food on the bed, placing a milkshake on the nightstand.

“One chicken club, twelve chicken nuggets, one banana milkshake and two fries” Ed smiles, sitting on the edge of the bed as he removes his jacket. Lorraine smiles slightly, watching as his coat falls aside, and now that he’s wearing only his sleepwear, he slides back in the bed.

If anybody had told Lorraine that it would only take pregnancy to get Ed to go to the 24-hr diner at 3am, well...

“How are you feeling?” Ed asks. Lorraine smiles slightly and kisses his cheek.

“Better for peeing...” she chuckles. Ed rolls his eyes and leans down to kiss her bump.

The pregnancy has been tough from the start. The overwhelming nausea landed her in hospital when she was unable to be around any food, never mind eating or drinking. Ed hasn’t been around much either, though not by choice. The war is ongoing, it’s a miracle that he’s survived so long.

He nearly died only a few years back. They married as soon as they could. A little work from her parents meant that they could marry three days after he appeared in the driveway of her parents’ home in the early hours of the morning.

Lorraine still remembers how her parents greeted them in the morning. Ed and Lorraine, both with tears staining their cheeks, had barely made it to the kitchen before they broke down in each other's arms, and begged each other to stop delaying the wedding.

And now, the war is still ongoing. Ed is alive, still drafted every few weeks. Now that he’s married, he gets more time at home though. Times like this are more common. Lorraine’s cravings have always been strange, but it’s rare for her to crave fast food in the early hours of the day.

That’s what Ed awoke to though. She was writhing on the bed, trying to get comfortable. He shifted until she was in the position that they have long perfected. And just as he was on the cusp of sleep, she announced that she wanted a banana milkshake.

Ed had asked if it could wait.

It could not.

He pulled his sneakers on, a coat over his pyjamas, and a moment later, he was driving away from the house to one of the various 24-hour diners that he didn’t have to actually go inside of.

Right now, Lorraine is looking at him like he hung each of the stars in the sky for her, and her alone. She throws herself into his arms and hugs him tightly.

“I love you, so much” she whispers. And as expected, tears are streaming down her cheeks after only a moment.

“I love you too hon...” he responds.

It might be cold outside, he might be tired as hell, but he would do this again for his wife tomorrow.

He’ll do anything for her.

Love may be hard to find, but they found an unmatched love in each other.
