Chapter 1: Denial

Chapter Text

The light shines in as Sam stretches in his big, warm bed. Bright sun rays shining directly in his eyes from an open window. Blinking away the morning fog, he notices he feels colder than usual. Lazily, he opens his eyes, only to see that the bed is made next to him. But It’s empty. Weird. Sitting up, he rubs his tired eyes and slides out of bed. Considering he's wearing only his boxers, he quietly slips on a robe and heads to the kitchen. Walking in, He sees his boyfriend is nowhere to be found, he “Brady?” He yells. No response. Hoping he's home today, Sam sleepily takes a step forward only to be startled with a loud sound.

A clatter and a bang alerts Sam of someone's presence. “Oh hey babe!” Tyson Brady says enthusiastically, struggling to walk over to the kitchen island. “What are you doing up? Sleep well?” Brady grins as he clampers out of the pantry, arms full of cooking supplies. Pouring them all on the counter. Not to mention very loudly. Dusting himself off, he walks over to Sam camly and gives him a warm kiss on the cheek. “Sorry, did I wake you up?”

Tiredness still slowly wafting over him, Sam replies, “No, no. You're fine. Just didn’t sleep well. That’s all.” He walks over and takes a seat in front of the counter rubbing his eyes again. “Whatcha doing?” He says. Looking over the very well kept kitchen. Brady is actually a good cook, surprisingly. Compared to Sam though, he seems like a professional culinary cook.

Brady gives a small empathetic smile before heading to the other side of the kitchen and grabbing a medium mug from the cupboard. “I’m sorry baby. You take melatonin?” Sam just nods. Bags under his eyes. He looks exhausted as usual. They have tried so many remedies to try and help Sam sleep. Nothing really works. Sam has just got used to it but Brady refuses to give it up. “Well” He hesitantly continued on, “As you know, It’s your big day today.” He says nicely as he's pouring steaming hot coffee in the mug. “And I wanted to be extra nice today. Well, nicer than usual.” He huffs as he hands Sam a cup of warm coffee. “No but for real. I’m proud of you and where you are today. You deserve this babe.” He walks behind Sam and wraps his arms around his waist, tucking his chin in Sam's neck. And his big day it was. Sam has been working overtime almost every day. Never really getting any breaks. And it all leads up to this. He finally got his big case. And as excited as he is, he’s also extremely anxious and scared he’ll mess it up. He’s a good lawyer. He knows he’s a good lawyer. But the stress is finally catching up to him, making him jittery. “Hey” Brady says as he walks in front of Sam and takes his hands in his own. “You're gonna do great. I know you will. And when you get home,” He leads on, nudging Sam in his side. “I have a surprise waiting for you.”

“I won’t get too excited,” Sam says as he gives his boyfriend a cheeky grin. checking his watch, It’s already 8:33. Damn. Brady gives his hands a squeeze before letting them go. “I gotta be out the door in like 10 mintues.” He says, taking a small sip of his piping hot coffee, giving Brady a kiss before heading to the bedroom. His head still aches from their date last night. Sam said he’s only going to have a couple glasses of wine. That clearly didn’t end up happening. He doesn't even remember what they did. All he knows is its karma now. “You better clean the mess you're about to make before you go anywhere today, you hear me?” He yells in all seriousness, with a hint of humor.

Meeting Brady was one of the best things that has ever happened to Sam. He is so incredibly lucky. Same goes for Brady as well. They already knew each other for years. It all started at Stanford. They shared a couple mandatory classes together. Had been partnered for a project. Brady was very obviously into Sam. Nothing ever happened between the two of them though. Some angsty drunk kissing and hugging. In fact, they actually got to be pretty close friends. Almost best friends. But after school was over, they went separate ways. Sam pursued law while Brady went into the medical field. Then, they surprisingly met again at a reunion, shared a beer or two and made plans to hang out. And they did. A lot. They remained friends for about 2 years until Sam's birthday, when Brady kissed him. It was surprising to say the least. Sam had only ever been with one man. And that was Castiel. They only dated for a year and then broke it off. It’s not that they fought a lot or anything like that, they just mutually thought they would be better as friends. Which turned out to be the best idea they ever had. Brady on the other hand, he’s been with many men and women. So he had much more experience with dating men than Sam. He taught Sam not to be scared to hold his hand in public, to not be ashamed to express who he is.

Sam walks out of their shared bedroom as he finishes putting on his moderately expensive cufflinks. All that work he's been putting into, well, work has paid off. He has money he can actually spend on himself. While going to school, he barely had enough money to spend on anything other than rent. He's lucky and grateful now. Those days taught him a lot about himself and really, everything. Those days he spent away from his family. The only real family he considers family is Dean. They don’t really talk about their parents. Not after everything.

“Is Dean coming over later?” Brady asks. After all, it is Sam's big break. It’s only right to throw a big ass party. “Like around six?”

“Uh, ya, I think so.” Looking around for his briefcase, Sam slips on his overcoat. “I’m pretty sure he’s bringing Lisa. I’m not sure about Ben though.” He says, finally finding it. There was silence between them now. It wasn't weird or awkward or anything like that. Just them, in their apartment, with each other. While Sam gets ready to head to work, Brady works on cleaning up the kitchen. First putting the dirty dishes in the sink, then wiping off the counters. Sam checks his watch again.

Anxiety already building up. Of course he’s scared. But he’s also happy. Grateful. He’s worked too hard for this. Brady was there the whole time to support him through all the rough patches in his life. Through the depressive periods, thick and thin. Through everything. Mental health has always been important to Brady. Ever since his younger sister had taken her life when she was just 16, mental health had always been a main priority. And of course that applied to Sam as well. He’s had his fair share of therapy and mental breakdowns. Hasn't always had it easy with mental health. College was one of his worst times. Constant breakdowns and anxiety attacks right before his big exams. He always doubted himself but ended up doing quite good. And Brady was there right by his side. Sam might not have known, but they cared deeply for each other. Even when they weren't the closest of friends.

Shaking off his nerves, he heads over to Brady to say goodbye. “Hey babe,” He says shakily, leaning in for a hug. And Brady returns it. “I uh, I got to head to work now.”

Brady wraps his arms around Sam’s back, caressing it. “It’s gonna be ok. I know you're going to kick all their whiny rich asses, I know you will. “ He says, Squeezing him. “I love you so much. You're gonna do great.”

Sam sighs and lets go of the hug. He wishes he could cherish it forever. Keep it with him so he could have it wherever and whenever he wanted. Especially today of all days. “I love you too.” He replies. Brady puts his hands gently on his boyfriend's face, leans in and gives him a sweet, slow passionate kiss. Meaningful.

Pulling away, Brady smacks Sam’s ass, “Now get your sweet, sweet ass to work before I have to do it myself” Brady says, giving Sam a smirk.

“Oh don’t tempt me.” Sam says seductively. “I love you. See you tonight."

"I love you too."
