Late-Night Escapism

Summary:

Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Queen of Spades runs away from Card Castle every night with the Duke of Puzzles! Wonder where they go…
It’d be a shame if King found out.

Notes:

Heya! This one’s a bit different from my usual fics. If you scroll through my Tumblr, you might know I ship Queenkaard. This fic takes place in the pre-divorce part of Queen’s backstory, so she and Rouxls are just friends, for now.
Have a nice read!

Work Text:

The stars were pretty tonight…

Queen watched the endless sky above her, admiring the moon in all its beauty. Nothing else was to be done for today. Lancer was in bed, King was asleep…She was the only one awake. Not that she could sleep these days, anyway. Truth be told, she had too much on her mind for her to even close an eye. She was thrilled with the idea of making her own kingdom someday, she wanted to get out of here. What were the pros of this Kingdom, anyway? She turned around, walking back to her desk, and accidentally knocking down a trashbin full of crumpled up papers.

“Oh Jeez…” She mumbled, crouching down and fixing it back up. She sat down on a chair, looking at some projects of hers. She still couldn’t think of a name. Digiland? Sounds like an amusement park name. Digital Kingdom? Oh, what the hell. Queen shook her head, maybe she should just go sleep…

Just before she started undressing…

“Mine Queene!!” A voice yelled from below. Oh, finally! There he was!! Queen rushed to the balcony, looking down to find Rouxls Kaard waving at her. Oh, Rouxls, such a kind-hearted slime man. She met him as pure fortuity, and quickly became friends with him. She waved back, a smile stuck on her face. “Rouxls!! I Thought You’d Never Come!!”

“Ha ha! That’s whereth thou art wrongeth, mine Queene! Now, lowereth thouself!!” He said proudly. That’s another thing she loved about him. His absurd confidence and cheerfulness.

“In A Minute!” She replied, looking through her room.

“Where Did I Put That Rope?” she mumbled, opening drawers and dressers. In her vanity’s drawer, she found the rope she was looking for. She was sure King wouldn’t go look in her vanity if he was suspicious about something.

Queen tied one of the rope’s ends to the foot of her bed, and the other to her waist. She was always a bit anxious when doing this…

“Mmm…”

“Thou can do it!!” Rouxls reminded her from below. Yeah. Yeah! She could do this!

Queen ran towards the balcony and jumped off, and she was left suspended upside-down, her face to Rouxls’ level.

“Oof!-“ Queen groaned while Rouxls quickly started to untie the rope around her waist. “Quick All The Battery Acid’s Rushing To My Head I Am Gonna Overload”

“Holdeth on…I amst trying…” Rouxls finally loosened the rope, and when Queen fell unceremoniously face down into the puddle of flowers below them, Rouxls’ hair frizzed up at the sight.

“M-Mine Queene! Art thou okayeth??” He asked worriedly.

She got back up, spitting out some petals. “Yeah I’m Good” She reassured.

“Greateth! Let’s go somewhereth far away!” Rouxls gave her a goopy smile.

Queen grabbed Rouxls’ hand, and looked around, in hopes that no Rudinn Rangers were around. If they were found, Queen would’ve surely been locked in the castle for eternity. As for Rouxls…she didn’t know what fate would await him instead. This Kingdom was so harsh…

But the two were in luck. All guards were asleep. They could make their move! Queen walked at a faster pace, Rouxls getting dragged along. She kept her guard high, for good measure. The forest wasn’t far, thankfully for them. A nice, quiet place where to rest…There were lots of tasty fruits, clean water, and gentle little creatures…

Queen always loved nature. She found herself enamored with it when she first ventured in the forest, always being so careful to not stomp any flower or hurt any animal. To Rouxls, such thing was fascinating. An artificial life of metal and silicone, capable of feeling empathy…capable of crying, laughing…Queen had always fascinated him. He always wanted to know more about her, and Queen loved all the attention and care he provided her with.

Even though this wasn’t her first time in the outside world, she looked happy. She wished that one day she could stroll in Card Kingdom with her little Lancer.

Scarlet leaves crunched under Queen’s heels, they finally were in the forest.

…Aaand Rouxls tripped over a tree root, yelping and splattering into the ground, while his white glowing hair left twinkling sparkles behind.

Queen looked at him, chuckling while Rouxls looked up, his face half-melted.

“Oh, very funnyeth…” He sighed, getting back up on his feet. Part of his face was missing the dark-blue slime that covered him, a second layer of electric blue slime underneath.

“…Are You Like…Okay?” Queen asked.

“It’ll groweth back…” Rouxls rubbed his face a bit, while Queen twirled a bit of his hair around her fingers.

“BTW How Does Your Hair Glow Like This?”

Rouxls let her do her thing, answering to her question. “It’s Diamond Dusteth…It glowst under the moonlight…or any light reallyeth.”

“Ooh…” Queen let go of Rouxls’ hair, now walking towards a crystal clear lake.

She looked at her reflection in the water, mesmerized. Her database was still very small, so she was curious about…practically anything. Rouxls followed, sitting down next to her.

“Thou can…try to…toucheth it.” He murmured. Queen looked at him a bit unsurely, but either way, she removed her gloves and…put a finger on the water’s surface, immediately pulling back at the weird feeling. Her touch rippled the water, and she glanced back at Rouxls, who was staring at the void until he noticed he was being watched. He shook his head.

“What?”

“Oh Uh…Nothing” Queen looked back at the water, now dipping a hand in. Small, colorful fishes rushed towards it to examine it. Queen tried to touch one, but they were too fast, and swam away. However, she didn’t give up so easily. She tried to catch them, but all she really did was jump into the water, and then resurface after a few seconds, now soaking wet.

“Well That Didn’t Work Lmao”

“Oh, Katrina…” Rouxls sighed. “How will thou get backeth at Card Castle in this stateth??”

“…” Queen frowned. “I Don’t Wanna Go Back”

“…I knowst.” Rouxls helped her out of the water. “But thou haveth to. At least…not now that thou art soakingeth wet.”

“…Hey Rouxls” Queen looked at him, he cocked his head.

She touched his chest with her warm, humid hands.

“We Will Always Be Together, Right?”

…always…

“I’ve got no more use for that woman.” King growled. “All she does is care for the kid and be an absolute pain in the neck.”

“…She’s…just tryingst to be a good mother…” Rouxls frowned.

“The kid can take care of himself just fine! I need a HEIR to the throne, not a WIMP!” King roared, and Rouxls winced.

“He’s just six! M-Mine Kinge, thou art takingst thy kid a bit too lightly…”

“Taking my kid too lightly? It’s her that’s making him too soft. It’s YOU who’s making him too soft. She got poisoned by those FILTHY Lightners and now she’s dragging my son down the same path. That kid is my Kingdom’s future and she’s making him…like this! She’s DANGEROUS to my Kingdom’s future.” King’s words were harsh, like venom. Rouxls backed away with a glare, speechless. He wanted to say oh so many things to King, but he’d be caged for it, since that’s how things go in this Kingdom.

“From now on she’ll be locked in this castle and she won’t get out, for any reason.

She’s a piece of metal and she’ll stay that way.”

…She’s a piece of metal and she’ll stay that way.

“Of courseth we’ll always be together.” Rouxls hugged Queen, and she hugged back.

“Do You Promise?” She asked, her voice muffled by Rouxls’ jacket.

“I promiseth.”

“…We should be goingst.” Rouxls looked at the moon.

“Aw…So Soon?” Queen frowned.

“Yes, let’s go.” Rouxls grabbed her hand, and quickly started going back to the castle. They had to be quick, Rouxls wouldn’t want King to find out Queen ran away. They ran through the forest, into bushes and thorns, and spotted the castle’s outline.

“Almost thereth…” Rouxls looked around for any guards, but alas for them, the Rudinn Rangers were awake.

“Oh Sh—“ Queen pulled Rouxls behind a tree, plugging his mouth shut with a hand. She breathed quietly and slowly, occasionally peeking out. When the coast was clear, She grabbed Rouxls’ hand and ran behind another tree.

“There’s So Many Of Them…” She whispered. Rouxls took her hand off of his mouth.

“I got an ideast…” He whispered back, coming out of his hiding spot.

“Why art thou hereth?” Rouxls questioned in a tone of authority. The soilders winced at his presence.

“Your Grace, you weren’t here to guard the castle, so we resorted to guard it instead.” One of them replied.

“Well, Now I amst! Go backeth to thy guarding spots!” Rouxls raised his voice and all the Rudinns quickly left the scene. Rouxls looked back at Queen, and nodded at her. She could make her move.

Queen ran below her balcony, climbing up. She hopped into her room, retracting the rope and untying it from her bed, storing it safely where she found it. After that, she looked back down, and waved at Rouxls with a smile.

“Thanks For Bringing Me Outside”

“No problemst, mine Queene! See thou tomorrow..eth!” And after that, Rouxls quickly ran away, back into the darkness. Queen once again waved at him, and sighed.

She was happy somebody still cared about her.

“Girldad?”

Queen turned around, finding her little son waiting by the door. Oh no, he saw everything.

Queen had to play it cool. She smiled.

“Hi Baby” She spoke to him in a sweet voice. “Did You See What Mommy Did?”

“Yeah I saw!! It was so cool! I didn’t know you were a Super Girldad!!” Lancer said enthusiastically. Queen knelt down before him, patting his head.

“I Know I’m Your Super Girldad…And Do You Know What Super Girldads Need?” She asked, Lancer stopped in thought.

“…A cape?” He asked, his mother chuckled.

“That Too, But They Also Need: A Secret Identity; So, Daddy Can’t Know About Me Being A Super Girldad. So, Everything You Saw Now…” She placed a finger on her son’s snout. “Nobody Can Know. Okay, Lancie?”

Lancer nodded. “Okay!! I’ll be so hush-hush about it!!”

“Great! Come On Now, Super Girldad Will Make You: A Super Breakfast” Queen got back up, and Lancer ran off. “Hoho!! A super breakfast!!”

Queen walked out of her room, looking at her moonlit balcony, and closing the door. Time to start the day…
