Power Nap

Summary:

Hawks makes a friend take a break from a stressful college assignment.

Notes:

A college student's sleep schedule isn't always the healthiest, and sometimes it takes a friend to give your body the rest it really needs.

Work Text:

The sound of yet another tired groan echoed throughout the apartment. That was the eleventh one in the past… five minutes. The winged man decided he had heard enough. He walked over to the dining room table where his houseguest was sitting.

“Hey!” Hitomi screeched as Hawks pulled her out of the chair. “Hawks, quit playing around!”

He said nothing as he braced her back and put an arm under her knees, scooping her up and adjusting her smaller frame in his grip.

“Hawks, put me down. I need to finish this tonight!”

“What you need is to take a break from the screen,” he said, walking away from her workstation. “Shut your eyes a bit.”

“If I fall asleep now, I won’t wake up until tomorrow afternoon!”

Hawks raised an eyebrow, taking note of broad daylight shining through the windows. “And shouldn’t that tell you something?” He stopped walking and looked down at her. “I promise, I’ll wake you up in an hour.”

She protested, jumping in his firm hold. “I can’t afford that! 20 minutes! I’ll do a power nap!”

“45.”

“Keigo!”

“The longer you argue with me, the longer it’ll be for you to get back to that beloved assignment of yours.” He smirked knowingly.

Hitomi pouted, heaving a sigh of defeat. “Fine… 45 minutes.” She gave him a stern look. “And not a minute more!”

Hawks grinned. “Right.” He resumed his walk, taking her to the couch and settling down with her laid out on his chest, his hand resting on the small of her back where he offered lazy scritches. “I really don’t know why you insist on fighting me when I’m trying to get you to look out for yourself. No assignment is worth your health. Remember last semester? I let you pull that two-days-no-sleep nonsense and then what? You were a zombie that entire weekend!”

Hitomi groaned, recalling that less than pleasant weekend. She was a barely functional human being. Fortunately, that Monday was a holiday. “Ok, ok,” she conceded, “I’m sorry…” She lifted her head, resting her chin on his chest to look into his face. “Did you set a timer?”

He gave a little huff, putting his free hand on top of her head and turning his body inward so she was sandwiched between him and the back of the couch. “Don’t worry about that. Close those dry eyes and that pretty mouth and take a mental break, yeah?” One of his large wings curled up to brush over her exposed arm. “I’ve got you, my little overachiever. You’re doing well and I know you’re worried about reaching the word count but you’ll get it done.” He placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head, emitting a little noise. “You always do.”

Hitomi hummed, closing her eyes as she snuggled into his warm and solid figure. She reveled in the feeling of one hand rubbing lightly on her back while his fingers threaded into her afro to scratch her scalp.

Hawks let out a smiling breath when he felt her relax into him, glancing up at the clock on the wall. “Atta girl.”

*Bonus*

Hitomi blinked awake as she stretched her legs out with a long hum. She registered that she was now laying on top of her winged friend. “How long has it been?”

Hawks blinked up from his phone, squinting at the clock on the wall. “Uh… what does that say? 6? About… an hour and a half, give or take?”

Hitomi’s eyes bulged. “A hou-” She bolted up, hitting him in the chest with both palms.

“Ow?!”

“I agreed to 45 minutes, Hawks!”

He tried and failed to hold back a laugh at her distress. “But you feel rested now, don’t you?”
