Naivete

Summary:

The naivety of a child is a fragile thing indeed.

Notes:

An edited/slightly better version of what I posted on tumblr last night. I hope it's better at least.

Also, I have like, five new adopted children because of this series. Mika is so goddamn important.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

He pushed him away so desperately, strong even as everything was crumbling to dust as naivety met reality in a blood end, with reality setting in enough for Mika to insist, "Leave," in the middle of pained breaths that weren't bringing in enough oxygen for his failing lungs and breaking heart. I can't leave him, his mind chanted. He's family, my family. Mika was still telling him to go, leave them, leave him, and even as his mind reeled with terror and hurt, his body pumped adrenaline fueled by white hot fury, steeling his resolve enough to stumble to his feet to run and not look back.

He kept running, footsteps echoing like the screams in his head. Closing his eyes only let him see the imprint of his family's expressions on the back of his eyelids, the terror, the pain, the desperation, all of them nothing more than mere nuisances as they were cut down like cattle. Opening them would make him see the blood on his hands, his clothes, remnants of a friend, the one he loved so much, so he kept them closed because it was just easier that way. Mika, his mind chanted, Mika.

Reaching the end of the passage, cold air greeted him along with the feeling of something cold and white crunching underneath his feet. He turned to glance back at the tunnel one final time before taking off down the hill away from the city, away from Mika.

You left him, his mind told him. You left him.

Notes:

I'm tempted to keep going with this. Time skip a bit, diverge from canon a bit. Just add tiny ficlets because this fandom doesn't have enough.

I might just do that. Hm.
