Chapter Text

Right after their training with Maxbot, Brimstone and Sage picked everyone up and they all boarded the VLT/R together. Everyone were chattering, Phoenix still annoying Kay/o. Yoru notices Killjoy was silent on her laptop, seated on one of the seats farther from the rest.

He approaches her.

"Oy, disappointed that your machine was actually defeated by Phoenix?"

He was met with silence and the clicking of her laptop's keyboard.

"You are not normally this silent after practice, what's wrong with you?"

Killjoy closed her laptop with a snap, clearing the loud chatter of the other agents. Now they've gained their attention. Killjoy straigthened up on her seat, fixing her broken glasses she raised her head to face him. Yoru's eyebrows raised from the unusual expression plastered on the genius' face.

"I build my tech for certain purposes, that "machine" earlier was named Maxbot, a training robot not a betting machine to make you rich. I work for the protocol not expecting them to pay for the techs that i make for its agents. I do NOT like people taking advantage of my works for their own gains."

Yoru let out a smug laugh, "It was just a friendly bet."

"To you maybe. Not for me... not again." Killjoy stood from where she sat and went to Brimstone and Sage who were silently exchanging glances. "Brim, did you receive my reports about the teleporter?"

Yoru did nothing but stayed where he was, following his gaze after Killjoy. Maybe it was true, the rumors that him and the other duelists would often talk about. About Killjoy and her association with Kingdom.

"Bruv, you need to apologize to her," Phoenix pat the smaller man's shoulder.

"Sage took all the credits, I gained nothing from that bet," he said and finally took a seat, falling silent during the whole trip.

When they arrived back at HQ, Killjoy was the first to leave the jet that nobody noticed she was gone until the speakers in the hangar rang.

"Uh Sage? We need you at medbay, Maxbot shot Cypher while we were gone. Please hurry, thank you."

And that was the last time the young duelists ever heard from the genius, she distanced herself from them very rarely leaving her lab. Days turned into weeks and KJ started refusing missions that would involve her with Yoru or any other duelists.

"Man this suck! Yoru this is your fault."

"Just apologize man."

"Jett was in on the bet too why should I be the only one to apologize?!"

"You started it! Don't drag me along with your failed comedy."

The Range started to empty out as the duelists retreated back into base after today's shooting exercise. They tried persuading Killjoy into joining but even Raze was shut out of the lab. Yoru stayed a bit longer, he observed the Agents' habits and Killjoy's is visiting the Range when she knows that it is clear from anyone. She would visit Brimstone in his office and the duo would then start a competitive shooting practice.

He waited and waited, but not even Brimstone showed up. It wasn't until after dark that he decided to call it a day. He can't understand why a small friendly bet made the genius that upset. They've been doing bets ever since the missions began but this one just doesn't sit right. Maybe he should approach her, waiting isn't doing anything good.
