Work Text:
with skateboards in hand, these idiots walk side by side with nothing but the other in mind.
the roads are quiet, the air around them feels warm, the sky is turning blue and the clouds are turning yellow too.
lots of glances are stolen with nervous eyes and giddy hearts, they stand only a few centimeters apart.
“…hey, hey langa…”, it’s so cozy right now, so warm.
slowly and unconsciously their hands brush, their sweaty and trembling hands keep on brushing, hoping to touch, to touch the other once more.
“…yes, reki?”
the wind rises up a little bit, langa tries to keep his hair out of his face, reki feels it tickle his forehead.
(it’s so warm.)
“mhm, if you had to pick… one thing, um one thing out of.. everything, everything like everything in the world, um right now.. what would it be?”
langa let’s his head fall towards the sky, he let’s out a quiet hum and he blinks a couple times.
(obviously i’d pick you.)
“…uh, maybe poutine?… or a giant hamburger.. maybe even a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with strawberries on top-“
“okay you’re just thinking with your stomach langa, is food all you think about?”, his tone is amused but he’s really not surprised.
langa looks down with a small smile. “then i’d pick… i’d pick um the hardest place to skate and compete in-“
“langa~“, reki whines and let’s his head fall back with a huff, “pick something else~ pick something um pick something weird.. or something- pick something fun!”
langa turns to look at reki with a grin, his eyes are shining, almost as if truly there was something really bright behind them.
“something fun? just one thing? this is getting hard..”
reki holds a laugh and hits langa’s shoulder with a smile. “tell me~”
one by one, the street lamps are turned on, the sky is no longer in any shade of yellow, there’s no trace of sunlight.
but the air never get’s cold, everything around them floats carefully with the wind and creates a small bubble for the two.
their hands never stop brushing, their feet walk in a safe and slow pace, it’s so so warm right now.
the road is quiet. the people are home. the children are in bed, yet these two idiots stay inside their little world as they return home.
“mmh, then i’d pick you.”
there’s rustling behind them as reki stops, a small bell is heard but it doesn’t disturb them, langa stops too.
the wind still moves beside the odd pair, moving some leaves and letting out the quietest whispers.
reki’s shoes are untied, he’s wearing that yellow sweatshirt under his school jacket, his neck is shining, probably from sweat, it’s warm.
langa looks at reki in silence and doesn’t stop his hair touch his face, his hands are clenched but he feels calm.
their eyes meet, everything around them stops, there’s no wind, there’s no sky, no japan, there’s nothing but them and a bell.
it’s a bicycle, a cyclist.
langa turns away and moves back.
the bubble pops.
it isn’t before the bike is completely out of view when reki asks, “…you’d… pick me?”
it isn’t quiet anymore, there’s cars and there’s dogs and cats, there’s teenagers walking away from their houses and there’s them.
the sky looks so blue, there’s a few stars and the wind is getting wilder.
“…i’d pick you”, he knows he’s got to repeat it, otherwise, how can he convince reki he feels the same?
reki hasn’t really moved from his spot, like at all. his feet are heavy and his back is aching, but there’s nothing keeping his heart beating from the excitement he’s feeling right now. (he’d pick me, he’d pick me.)
langa turns his head away, he keeps on walking, there’s a small smile on his face.
reki blinks and runs trailing behind him, his heart is beating, so so loud.
he doesn’t hesitate to grab langa’s hand as they walk side by side, their fingers tangling in an awkward and sweaty way.
the way you’d hold hands for the first time, with your crush, on a warm evening.
(that way.)
“i’d also pick you.”, langa knows.
