"Dean and I do share more of a profound bond," Dean said, mockingly, as he shoved Castiel against the street wall, raising an eyebrow at his friend. His heart beating heavily, trying to focus on his annoyance, and nothing else. Which was proving to be difficult.
"You're the one who keeps denying how you feel. Oh, and thanks for making a big commotion about me answering your call. What was I supposed to do?" Castiel asked, frowning, as he stared into Dean's eyes.
Dean didn't look away, but he groaned inwardly when he felt a blush creeping up his neck and onto his cheeks.
"Ignore me!" Dean replied, though he didn't mean it. And he hoped Castiel knew that.
"No, you know I can't ignore you. I'd never ignore you. Sam, on the other hand, well…" Castiel answered, with a slight smirk.
He grinned stupidly. Of course Castiel couldn't ignore him. That was when Dean remembered one of the reasons why he was annoyed with Castiel in the first place. He tried to keep his eyes away from the smirk on the Angel's lips. It was his favourite look on him, not that he'd ever say that out loud of course.
"You seriously ignored Sammy for a year? Talk about favourites," Dean responded, but his eyes widened slightly when he had to adjust himself slightly.
He stepped back from Castiel, somewhat awkwardly, leaning against the wall, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead.
"He hurt you. Damaged you, in more ways than you'd care to admit. So, yes, I ignored him. For your sake, and mine. Because if you weren't here, Dean. I'd sure give Sam a piece of my mind," Castiel replied, anger showing in his eyes, his hands closing into fists.
"Hey, Cass. It's okay," Dean whispered, stepping closer to Castiel, wrapping his hands around Castiel's fists, undoing them as he couldn't look away from his friend's eyes blazing with anger.
"Dean, Sam hurting you is not okay. Yet, you keep letting him do it, you keep letting him in," Castiel said, whispering in reply, not looking away either.
"He's family, Cass. He's my brother. If I don't have him, if I don't trust him, not even a little bit, I… And I don't have anyone else -"
"What about Lisa, and Ben?" Castiel asked, almost brokenly.
Dean smiled sadly. He had only told Sammy and Bobby about the split, he couldn't bring it up with anyone else. He hadn't found the courage to bring it up to the one person he should have told first. Better late than never, he thought, as he took a breath. "We managed for a few months. But I couldn't do it. I couldn't put them in danger. I shouldn't have made that promise to Sam. It was a fantasy, Cass. It didn't work."
"Why? Why didn't you make it work?" Castiel questioned, the sadness in his eyes clouding his vision.
Dean pushed Castiel fiercely back against the wall, and leaned his forehead against his friend's. But perhaps, he should stop calling Cass a friend. "My heart wasn't in it," he answered, his breath on Cass's lips.
"I don't understand why you're taking your anger out on me," Castiel grunted in reply, confusedly.
"You don't? Like you don't know it's your fault my heart wasn't in it? Like you dropped everything to help me? Like you've saved my life more times than I can count? Like how you answered my call and not Sam's?" Dean could have gone on, and sure, he would have, but he was interrupted.
He was interrupted with Castiel closing the gap between them, his rough lips and hot breath syncing with his own as they kissed passionately. Dean held Castiel's hands tightly against the wall as Cass deepened the kiss.
Dean let out a low moan, as he lost track of time. He didn't know how long they had been kissing for, he didn't know how long they had lasted before they had to break apart to both breathe once more, but he didn't care. As he grinned a perfect, shy smile, his focus solely on Castiel's eyes, he realised something.
He finally knew what all of the fuss was about.
This was what true love felt like.
And it was awesome.
"Took you long enough to notice me," Castiel broke the silence, his lips turning upwards into a true smile.
"Oh, Cass. You know I always noticed you."
