Our Song

Summary:

Bakugo hadn’t been paying attention at the rehearsal dinner, and that was his fatal mistake. He knew that when the doors opened, he would see Uraraka in her beautiful floor-length white dress, walking down the aisle with her parents on each arm. He knew she had a veil that covered most of her face and her bouquet matched the bridesmaid dresses. He knew his mom designed the dress for her with a heart-shaped top and a bell-shaped bottom with a hint of pink touching the floor.

He didn’t realize she would look at him as the doors opened with a bright, tearful smile.

And he didn’t realize how painful it was to watch her marry someone else.

Work Text:

Rei was a nice man. She met him doing hero work and (according to Deku) they seemed to hit it off right away. He had a good job, a nice family, and nothing wrong with him. Frankly, he was boring.

Even as Uraraka walked towards him, his expression didn’t change. Rei reached a hand out to her. Bakugo couldn’t help the sneer on his face as she took it, still smiling widely.

Deku and some chick he didn’t recognize were the only ones next to the couple. Of course, Deku was crying buckets, but the girl seemed to look tired. She rolled her eyes multiple times and looked at the back of the church repeatedly to check the time.

“Something’s wrong,” Bakugo whispered to Kirishima.

“Villian?”

Bakugo shook his head. “Gut feeling. Something isn’t right about this.”

“Look, man. I told you to tell Uraraka all about your feelings before this happened.”

“That’s not what I’m talking about, shithead!”

Mina hushed him from her seat on the other side of Kirishima. She was dabbing her eyes, careful not to smudge any of the makeup delicately placed across her cheeks.

Bakugo rolled his eyes at her and leaned back in his seat, watching the maid-of-honor glare at the clock as if it was moving too slowly for her liking. The church didn’t have air conditioning, so the longer he sat in his monkey suit, the longer sweat fell down his spine and concentrated into his palms.

“What’s wrong?” Kirishima whispered. Bakugo nodded to the girl with a small smile.

“Tell me that bitch isn’t weirding you out.”

Kirishima watched for a moment, then sighed. “Yeah. Something’s wrong. She’s waiting for something.”

As they were watching, Rei looked at the girl with a smile. She tapped her wrist, and he nodded ever so subtly. Bakugo looked to the right of Rei and saw Deku watching them with a curious glare. His waterworks stopped at the perfect time and he caught Bakugo’s eyes.

Kirishima sighed. “Grab her and get out. Now.”

They stood up, breaking the quiet of the church. Bakugo could feel the eyes of hundreds of people boring into his back. He didn’t care. All he noticed were Uraraka’s big brown eyes begging for the day to go well. Begging him to stop. But he couldn’t.

He grabbed her and pulled her away from Rei just as the windows of the church shattered. Hundreds of people in full military tactical garb surrounded them.

“What the fuck is going on?” Uraraka asked.

“I don’t know,” Bakugo said. He found Kirishima grappling Rei to the ground as Deku was handcuffing the girl. “I need to get you out of here.”

“Katsuki Bakugo. Don’t you da-”

His sweat exploded in a flash, pushing him and Uraraka out of the already broken window and out onto the street. She seemed to take the hint and made both of them lighter, helping him navigate to the top of a building two blocks away.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“With me?” He laughed and sat on the roof before rubbing his palms against his already dirty slacks. “Did you miss the army coming to attack you and your prince charming?”

“But you-” She pointed a finger, puffing out her cheeks slightly, then groaned and collapsed on the ground next to him. “Damn it.”

“What?”

She looked up at him with a sad smile.

“I just really wanted to get married today.”

Then he really looked at her. In the afternoon sun, her cheeks shimmered with the same pink shimmer Mina was trying to protect. Bakugo was stuck looking from her bright brown eyes, lined with a thin black stripe, to her button nose with a heart-shaped shine. Her lips were a bright pink and Bakugo forced himself to look away.

They watched the church from the roof and could see movement inside. The heroes would protect the civilians, but if Bakugo left Uraraka on the roof, no one would save him from Mina. The soldiers in black started moving out of the church with their guns aimed at the sky. They were clearly looking for Uraraka.

“We should move,” Bakugo said, standing.

“I’m not leaving them.”

“Do you know what’s happening?”

She shook her head. Another crash drew their eyes to the church.

A burst of green hair started running from the church, with guns firing after him. Bakugo let off a small burst from his hands and Deku changed directions to land on the roof with them.

“They think you’re responsible for the bombing last month,” Deku said before either of them could ask. “It’s not a pretty sight.”

Uraraka didn’t look surprised. “And Rei?”

Deku paused for a second, looking to Bakugo, but he just shrugged. There was no use hiding anything from her.

“He’s the one who called them. He-he’s been lying to you, Uraraka.”

“No. No.” She shook her head and stumbled. Bakugo grabbed her arm gently, and she leaned into him. “There’s no way. He wouldn’t do that. On our wedding day?”

Deku shrugged. “I think they offered him money. I saw a soldier giving him a stuffed envelope.”

“I’ll kill the son of a bitch,” Bakugo grumbled. Uraraka grabbed his arm and squeezed.

“It’s not worth it.” She stood up, still with her hand on Bakugo’s arm, and cleared her throat. “They’re shooting in the dark. I was at the bomb site for cleanup, but had nothing to do with it.”

“Of course they need someone to blame,” Bakugo said. “But why are they pointing the finger at you?”

Deku ran a hand through his hair, ruining his best man’s attire. and returning to the look of the dorky hero.

“The bomb had mysterious circumstances. Instead of detonating on one floor, it went off in the center of a stairwell completely detached from anything. With Uraraka’s powers-”

“Then someone made it look like she did it.”

Uraraka sighed. “Either way, I need to go down there. My family’s not safe.”

Bakugo pulled her away from the edge of the roof. There was no way he would let her go back to where guns would never leave her side.

“Fuck that. We need to get you somewhere safe.”

“And risk them hurting my family?”

“Your family is with some of the best heroes in the world. They’ll be fine. You, on the other hand-”

“-are perfectly capable of making my own decisions, Bakugo.”

“Not if they’re stupid decisions!”

She ignored him. “Not to mention I’m one of the top rescue heroes in Japan. I know what the fuck I’m doing!”

Deku snickered, causing them to glare daggers at him. He raised his hands, surrendering.

“Sorry,” he giggled. “You’re just fighting like an old married couple… again.”

Bakugo rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. With Uraraka wearing a wedding dress, the thought was impossible to ignore. Her cheeks turned a bright red as she looked away from him to the church below. Police cars were swarming as people were being led out in cuffs.

“Bakugo, listen.”

“Fuck off.”

“Oh, get your head out of your ass for a second,” she huffed. “I have a plan.”

————————————————

He carried her to the ground as gently as possible. The pink at the bottom of her skirt had turned to a dark brown as mud clung to the fabric. She didn’t seem to mind as she stormed to the church with her head held high. Bakugo kept pace, keeping to her side while Deku watched from above.

He hated to admit it, but it was nice to have Deku as a backup in case something went wrong. Uraraka was right. The last thing they needed was to ruin all of their friends’ reputations. Deku included, apparently.

She tried to keep Bakugo out of it too, but he refused.

“Fuck my reputation.”

She laughed, and there was no second thought.

Uraraka stopped at the edge of the lawn and crossed her arms as she got closer to the soldiers.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing to my wedding?” she screamed at the soldiers.

Immediately, their guns trained on her. Bakugo’s instincts kicked in. He pulled her behind him and sparked some small explosions in his hands.

“You touch her and you’ll never see tomorrow,” he growled.

“Easy, Dynamite,” Rei said. He held out his hands out as if trying to calm a scared animal. “We’re not going to hurt her.”

“Bullshit.”

A soldier stepped up to Bakugo. Hidden behind their uniform helmet, Bakugo couldn’t see his face but imagined an annoyed sneer.

“Let’s get this over with,” the soldier said. He pushed forward, reaching for Uraraka’s arm.

Before he could do anything, Uraraka grabbed Bakugo’s hand and let the soldier grab her. In a second, the soldier started floating above his peers. He was screaming, and it took everything in Bakugo not to laugh at the absurdity.

“I had nothing to do with the bombing,” she said. Her voice echoed across the crowd. “My agency has a video of me inside doing paperwork at the time of the explosion. My hero camera was on the entire time I was in the building and you have no reason to arrest anyone here today. Now, I would like to resume my wedding if it’s not too much to ask.”

Silence fell across the soldiers. There were whispers and a taller soldier with a silver badge on their chest stepped forward.

“You know better than most that those forged videos are commonplace,” the soldier said. She sounded amused as if talking down to Uraraka was the highlight of her day. “In fact, we have a changeling confess to doing your time at the agency.”

“And you’re going to value their word over mine?” Uraraka asked. “That’s bullshit and you know it.”

Bakugo stood between them, refusing to stand back as Uraraka pulled him.

“Is she being arrested?” he asked, keeping his voice composed. His hands were shaking as he spoke.

“I’m sorry?”

“Is Uravity under arrest?”

“No. We’re just here to question her.”

Bakugo laughed, gesturing to the guns now pointed at the ground. “Well, this is one hell of a questioning. All I hear are accusations. With the amount of heroes you’ve put in unnecessary danger today, you’ve really stuck your neck out for this one.”

The soldier looked around for a second, confused.

“What are you talking about?”

“The heroes?” He talked slowly, pausing at every word to get it through her thick skull. “This is a hero’s wedding? You realize that, right?”

At his word, Kirishima, Mina, and the rest of Class A stepped around the soldiers ready to fight. Deku jumped from the roof and landed behind Uraraka. If they weren’t in their Sunday best, they might have looked threatening.

“Reinforcements are coming,” Deku bluffed. Hopefully, they would be enough.

It seemed to do the trick as the leader took a step toward Rei. He was cowering behind a soldier, hiding from Mina’s glare. If Bakugo didn’t know he was engaged to a hero, he would have guessed he hated them.

“I thought you said there would be no heroes.”

“I-I didn’t know.”

Uraraka laughed. “Of course, you didn’t.”

Bakugo turned to her, and she shrugged with a wide grin.

“You think I’m that stupid? He didn’t want any heroes to come. That’s a red flag if I’ve ever seen one.”

“And you still wanted to marry the fucker?”

She waved him off. “That’s a conversation for another day.”

He mirrored her smile. “Can’t wait to hear you talk your way out of that one.”

Kirishima rolled his eyes. “Would you two stop flirting for ten minutes? This is serious.”

The soldier removed her helmet, unveiling short brown hair and a long scar across her right eye. She looked to Bakugo, then to Uraraka before she bowed her head slightly.

“My apologies, Uravity. I was told to prepare for the worst when confronting you.” She glared at Bakugo. “I can see we didn’t prepare enough.”

He grinned. “Yeah. Good luck with all that.”

She sneered before turning back to her troops. “Let’s get out of here. Call it a day.”

Uraraka stepped in front of Bakugo and held out her hand.

“I will happily go to your office and answer any questions you have, but this was inappropriate.” She turned and glared at Rei. “And if you needed a reason to run from me, you could have thought of something better.”

The captain took Uraraka’s hand and shook it.

“I understand and I look forward to speaking with you in the future.”

With that, they packed up and left, leaving the church with garbage and skid marks as the only proof of what had happened. Uraraka immediately ran to her parents to ask if they were okay as Bakugo found his mom.

She was more upset about the dirt on Uraraka’s dress than the wedding getting interrupted. After a minute of talking to her, he was done. He didn’t want to deal with this stupid wedding anymore.

He wandered back to the church, where glass fragments decorated the ground like ornaments. He sat in the pew three rows from the front where he and Kirishima found their places. Now, the seats are empty.

“I never really liked this venue.” Uraraka’s voice came from behind him.

He had a serious case of déjà vu. The only difference was her missing flowers, veil, and the dirt at the base of her dress. Otherwise, she looked just as beautiful as she smiled at him from the aisle.

“Why’d you pick it?”

“Rei wanted it,” she said, shrugging and sitting next to him. “I didn’t really care.”

Bakugo was quiet for a second, then finally asked, “Why did you agree to marry him?”

“Well, first of all, I asked him.”

His eyebrows raised as she stayed staring at the front of the church.

“I honestly never thought I would get married,” she continued. “I never thought anyone would want to marry me. Not only with the hero business, but… just me.”

She was quiet for a moment and Bakugo thought she would start crying. He saw her lip quivering, but she kept her composure.

“I thought it was my only chance, but… I guess it’s just not for me,” she whispered.

“That’s the most amount of bullshit I’ve ever heard.”

She chuckled and looked at him. Tears were pooling in her eyes, not daring to fall down her cheeks.

He hated it. He hated Rei. It was all his fucking fault. He was the one who made her cry now. He broke her fucking heart, but that meant she was here. With him.

“You know you’re a badass. You don’t need me to fucking tell you that. You’re the one to shove it down my throat every chance you get.” He looked out the window to watch the cars passing by. He didn’t want to watch her cry. It hurt too much.

“I know,” she laughed. “I just-”

“You don’t need to have a ring on your finger or some dumbass on your arm to prove that you’re awesome.” He looked at her dress. “If you really fucking need that, I’ll happily buy you a ring. You can find the dumbass on your own, though.”

She laughed, finally wiping her cheeks and showing him a toothy smile. He let himself look at her smudged lipstick and gripped his hands to his lap.

“If you buy me a ring, I don’t think our friends would let either of us live that down.”

“Deku already called us an old married couple,” he said. “Fuck it.”

Uraraka was quiet for a moment, then wiped her hands on her gown.

“You’re right,” she said, standing in the aisle to look down at him. “Fuck it.”

Her eyes were bright. The sudden shift in her mood made Bakugo sit up straight.

“What? What are you thinking?” he asked. She turned away from him for a moment, thinking. Then she turned back, pacing. “Uraraka?”

“Okay, hear me out.”

“That’s not a great start.”

“Katsuki, please.”

That shut him up.

She knelt in her dress, meeting his eyes again. It looked like she was pleading. With every second of silence, she was scaring him more.

“This sounds stupid and irresponsible and… I don’t know, crazy? I know you’re probably going to say no, but hear me out before you say anything, okay?”

He nodded, and she took a deep breath.

“We’ve known each other for a long time and we work really well together. Not just as heroes, but when we were living in the dorms. We used to study and take care of chores together. Do you remember?”

Bakugo nodded again, instantly worrying about the gross sweat on his hands as she grabbed them. Uraraka didn’t flinch as she kept talking.

“That’s when Mina started joking that we were a cute couple. We joked together and understood each other without a word.”

“Where are you going with this, Uraraka?” he asked. He couldn’t take it anymore. She opened her mouth to say something but shut it again. “Just spit it out already.”

Finally, she said, “I really wanted to get married today, so… will you marry me?”

—————————————————

Uraraka’s father approached Bakugo before the reception. Everything seemed to go too quickly and when he finally got a moment to process, his new father-in-law sat next to him.

“How ya doin’, Bakugo?” he asked.

“I- I don’t know.”

“Fair ‘nough,” he chuckled, then sat in silence for a moment. “I just wann’d ta tell ya we never liked Rei.”

Bakugo looked at him. He shared Uraraka’s kind eyes and wide smile. It instantly made his heart calm.

“Really?” Bakugo asked and Mr. Uraraka nodded.

“He was always a scardy cat. I knew he wouln’t protec’ my baby girl. An’ I know you will.”

“All due respect, sir. Uraraka can protect herself without my help.”

“I know,” he sighed. “Don’t mean she won’t need it.”

Bakugo nodded, looking into the crowd of people. Uraraka was making her way through, meeting each person with a smile and giving them each hugs. Every few minutes, she would look at him and smile.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” he whispered, then looked at Mr. Uraraka. “I’m sorry I didn’t ask you before. I didn’t really have a lot of time-”

“Don’t worry ‘bout it,” he brushed it off. “If Ochako loves you, you’re already family.”

“Right.” If she loves me. Does she love me?

As if she could read his thoughts, she caught his eye and nodded toward the door. He stood and made his way through people he didn’t know before forcing his way out into the warm early fall air.

“Are you okay?” Uraraka asked as soon as she joined him.

“I don’t know,” Bakugo answered honestly. “This wasn’t how I thought today would go.”

She laughed, holding her hand out to him. The ring on her finger was from Rei and Bakugo promised to get her a new one as soon as he could. She shrugged and laughed as Rei’s ring was two sizes too big for his hand. He refused to put it on, but Deku kept it in his pocket for Uraraka to return.

“Are you sure about this?” she asked.

“Getting married? I think it’s a little too late for that.”

“You know what I mean.”

He shrugged, and they sat in silence for a moment. Bakugo couldn’t tell what she was thinking, but he was trying to attach the word wife to her face.

“This is weird,” he said, scratching the back of his neck. “I don’t know what to do now.”

Inside the reception hall, Jiro’s voice echoed across the hall.

“If everyone can find their seats, the meal should be starting soon. Make sure you sign in and put your gifts on the table to the right of the cake.”

Uraraka grabbed his hand and smiled.

“Well,” she said. “Right now, we’re going to go in there, eat a too expensive meal, then dance until our legs fall off. Sound good?”

He nodded and let her pull him through the doors. When they took their seats, their friends clapped and cheered before they filled out the rest of the tables.

Deku sat on the left of Bakugo as Uraraka took her place on the right. While they were eating, Deku tried to talk to Bakugo multiple times. Each time, he ignored the twerp, instead, he leaned over to Uraraka and make a joke about the food or music. She would giggle into her hands each time and Bakugo’s heart would beat loudly against his chest.

Eventually, Kirishima sat on the other side of Bakugo and helped him take his mind off of the whole ordeal.

The meal went too quickly.

Bakugo was in a daze as they cut the cake, finished the desert, and the lights dimmed across the hall.

“Do you have a song you want to dance to?” Jiro whispered while they were greeting people.

Uraraka looked to Bakugo, and he shrugged.

“I don’t really care,” he said.

Uraraka thought for a second before running off to talk to Deku, leaving Bakugo in a mix of her family members. He tried his best to shake hands and explain why he wasn’t the groom during the first run of the wedding. Then he heard it.

“If the bride and groom would make their way to the dance floor, we can start this party with their first dance.”

Uraraka’s parent put their hands on Bakugo’s shoulders, offering him a kind smile before he stepped onto the empty dance floor.

Uraraka fiddled with the tool on her dress, and her eyes were glued to the floor.

“I-I picked a song.” Her voice was just above a whisper. “If you don’t like it-”

“It’ll be fine, cheeks.”

He offered her a hand, and she took it just as the music started.

I met a superhero. I lost her. I want her back.

“Really?” he chuckled as they started swaying. “A little on the nose, don’t you think?”

“That’s why I like it,” she said with a smile.

Bakugo’s hand found her waist, and he pulled her to his chest. It wasn’t really a slow, sad song like he thought. So, he just focused on dancing with his wife.

“Something’s bothering you,” Uraraka whispered into his chest. “Can you just tell me so I don’t have to guess?”

Mina had fixed her makeup, erasing the tear tracks on her cheeks. He looked away, hiding from those piercing eyes.

“I- Don’t worry about it.”

“It’s officially my job to worry about it.” She squeezed his arm, pulling his eyes back to her. “What’s the worst that can happen? My fiance tried to get me arrested today and now I have a different husband. Nothing’s going to surprise me.”

“Fine. Whatever.” He thought for a second. There was no way he could phrase it in another way. “I thought marriage was between people who, you know, love each other.”

Uraraka snickered. She didn’t falter as they kept dancing.

“Normal marriages are,” she said. “What do you think?”

He leaned down to whisper into her ear, hiding his face. Fuck it.

“I think… I think I’ve been in love with you since UA.”

She froze for a second before pulling him into a hug.

“You think?” she laughed. “It sounds weird to say I’m so happy my husband loves me.”

“It’s even weirder to say I don’t know if my wife loves me.” As soon as the words left his mouth, he wished he had bit his tongue.

Uraraka laughed again, pulling away to look at him. Tears fell from her eyes as she looked up. Bakugo had to remind himself that he could touch her cheek as he wiped them away.

The song ended, but Uraraka didn’t pull away yet.

“Of course I love you, you idiot. That’s why I asked you to marry me. I wouldn’t-”

He kissed her.

During the ceremony, he had to kiss her quickly, but now he held her cheek and felt her relax in his hand.

“I love you, Ochako Uraraka,” he whispered as her eyes fluttered open.

“That’s Ochako Bakugo to you, Katsuki.”

He rolled his eyes and stepped away. He grabbed her hand and refused to let go of his wife as they danced the rest of the night.
