Work Text:
You tried your best to fall asleep, but it just wouldn’t welcome you in its arms. You’ve had enough of tossing and turning for one night and simply gave up, realizing it’s going to be one of those nights.
You were on the straw hat pirates’ ship. You had met them on a lowly island you were stranded on and needed a way to get to your home. You felt forever grateful for their kindhearted captain, Luffy, who was more than happy to give you a lift to your island. Saying something about wanting to visit your island and what kind of meat was there.
You grew fond of the rest of the straw hats in a short amount of time, they were a rowdy bunch, but you admired them all the same. Nami, their beloved navigator, informed you and the crew it’d only take about a week to get to your island. It was only the third day of sailing.
You sneak over to their ship’s library, thinking hopefully a nice book could put your mind at ease. You are greeted with the familiar smell of paper, however you weren’t expecting to find Robin sitting on the couch with her nose buried in a book too. Though you can’t be too surprised, you had noticed she’s usually reading out on the deck. You still wonder why she’s here this late in the night. She calls out your name, breaking your train of thought.
“What are you doing up?” She asks as she lowers her book and cocks her head to the side. The sight of her warms your heart.
“I could ask you the same thing.” You give her a soft, but tired smile.
“It’s easier to read when everyone’s asleep.” She says and returns a soft smile. It’s sweet and genuine, you hope to remember it for as long as you live. Something tells you she knows you’re having trouble sleeping and she pats the seat next to her. “You’re more than welcome to join me.”
Realizing you’re still standing in the library’s entrance, you take her invitation and thank her. You couldn’t see from the door, but you notice their medic, Chopper, is also with her, curled up in a ball sleeping soundly by her side. The sight is too cute for your heart to handle.
“Would you like some tea?” you nod your head and see arms sprout from the table in front of you and they pour you a cup. They hand it to you and you give them your thanks. They wave and dissipate into flower petals. “Were you looking for something to read, or were you just walking around the ship?” She asks you with a protective hand hovering over the sleeping reindeer.
“I was just looking for something to… calm me down, I guess. Have any recommendations?” You see the older woman think to herself for a moment and shuffles around the books on the coffee table. She hands you the one she had been looking for.
“One of my personal favorites. Chopper likes me reading it to him, too.” You smile at the mental image of Robin reading Chopper a bedtime story.
You set down your tea cup and thank her. She just smiles back at you. You find yourself wondering how such a sweet and kind spirited woman could have such a high bounty on her head.
The two of you read a comfortable silence with the exception of Chopper’s light snores. You may be a bit homesick, but right now, there’s nothing more you could ask for.
With more time passing, you struggle to keep your eyes open. Robin feels your head meet with her shoulder and when she’s about to ask if anything was wrong, she sees you sleeping soundly. She pats your head and thinks it's about time for her to turn in for the night as well.
