Work Text:

1.

"I don't know, it looks kind of short," Olivia said, turning around to see the side of the dress Amber told her to wear.

"Trust me, it's not. I've seen other girls wear shorter," Amber reassured her, grabbing her friend's shoulders so they could look at Olivia's reflection together.

"But—"

And you look cute," Amber added.

Olivia fought off a blush fighting to make its way to her cheeks. She tries to rationalize that she's only like this because Amber is a new friend. A new, pretty, amazing, confident, smart, and rich friend. Who wouldn't blush when someone like that compliments them?

"Okay, but I'd change my clothes the moment I hear someone say it doesn't look cute."

"Good luck with that. Let's see if they have the time to do that when they're too busy checking you out," Amber said, applying lipstick in the mirror.

Olivia briefly wonders if Amber would be one of those people. She hopes. What? It's normal to want your friends to check you out. Right?

"Now let's go. I'm excited for everyone to see you. Their jaws are all going to drop and I'll be proud to tell them you're my best friend."

Olivia ignored the way that made her heart skip  beat. She smiled and hooked her arm around Amber's as they made their way to the car, too aware of the skin and heat of her best friend

2.

"Are you sure it's okay I ride with you everyday?" Olivia asked when she'd settled in the seat of her friend's car.

"Yeah, why wouldn't it be?" Amber asked, tucking her hair behind her ear.

"I feel kind of guilty taking advantage of you like this," Olivia confessed, looking down.

"Hey, what are friends for? We're going to the same place. I could not be bothered less," Amber told her, taking Olivia's hand in her's, making the other girl look up at her.

"But are you really sure? I don't want people to get the wrong idea."

"Let them. We're too pretty to care about what they think," Amber said, flicking her hair behind her back.

Olivia smiled at her best friend's boldness.

"Hey, Amber?"

"Yes?"

"Thanks. You're the best," Olivia said honestly.

"I know."

The whole way there, neither of them lets go of the other's hand and neither of them comments about it.

3.

"They think I'm rich."

"Let them," Amber replied almost immediately, her breath that smelled of the bubblegum she was chewing hitting Olivia in the face as Amber applied eyeshadow on her.

Olivia opened the eye Amber wasn't applying eyeshadow on, "But wouldn't that be lying?"

"No. They're making up their own stories that you neither confirm or deny because it isn't their business. Not your fault we have more interesting lives than them," Amber said, finally finished with her work on Olivia's face.

They stare at each other for a while, neither of them really aware that they were doing it. Olivia memorized her friend's face, from her forehead to eyebrows to eyelashes to her eyes and then nose, to her cheeks, until her gaze finally landed on the other girl's lips that shone so brightly with the sun hitting it.

"I really did mean it when I said you're the most beautiful girl I've seen," Amber whispered softly.

Olivia's heart skipped again. Deep inside she knows what it means but she still doesn't want to admit it.

"And you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen," Olivia told her back, giggling when Amber pushed her playfully.

"I better be!"

4.

"Amber, I don't think I like Donte," Olivia whispered, interrupting the movie they were watching together.

"Yes, you do," Amber whispered back, not taking her eyes off the screen.

"He's nice. And I like him, but only as a… friend, I think," Olivia said, scooting closer to her friend to wrap the blanket around her more comfortably.

"Just give it some time. He's the perfect guy for you, trust me," Amber replied, putting several popcorns in her mouth which Olivia does not stare at.

"How are you so sure about that?" The blonde asked, turning her attention back to the movie.

"Because he's the most perfect guy I know and you're the most perfect girl I know," Amber said without missing a beat.

Olivia glanced at her, the other girl was engrossed with the film, making the blonde wonder if she even knew what she was saying.

5.

"I'm not ready."

"I am."

There was an overwhelming urge to kiss her best friend again, but she ignored it. She can't. It's too much. They were just fighting earlier. They can't. Not so soon. Olivia wouldn't let herself get burned again.

"Amber…"

"It's okay, Olivia. I understand. You're unsure. You're torn. Let's just focus on making up again," Amber told her, taking her friend's hands in hers.

"I kissed you. I really kissed you. I've wanted to do that for ages," Olivia said breathlessly.

"That makes the two of us," Amber said with the same breathless voice.

"But you have a boyfriend and I don't know what my mom will—"

Amber squeezed her hands, "I know. "

And for all they are, for all the messes they've been through, Olivia still couldn't help melting at the words the girl she loved told her.

+1

"I'm ready," Olivia said suddenly, making Amber look up from painting her nails.

"For what?" Amber asked as she shook her head slightly with a confused smile.

And ever so softly, Olivia clarified, "To be with you."

Amber put down the nail polish to look at Olivia clearly.

"But what about…"

"You already broke up with Rex, my mom was cool with my sexuality, and—oh right—I'm in love with you," Olivia counted on her fingers.

Amber was silent in front of her.

"I'm… I'm sorry, did I say something—"

Before she could finish her sentence, Amber had already pushed her down the bed and was kissing her. They were panting when they seperated, a thin string of saliva connecting their lips still.

"Oh."

Olivia wasn't even sure who said that; most likely her.

They stared at each other, drinking each other's fond expressions. They both kissed each other again, more softly and only briefly.

Things have never been more right and she has never been more sure.
