Work Text:

"I thought we were special"

Shoto could never say that to a certain someone.

He was not ready for the rejection. Not quite a rejection. He just put his hope too high, way too high, it was just all dream. The one that he wished to never wake up.

He lost one best friend in the past, he didn't want to lose another one just because of his dumb flirtatious ass. True, he was a huge flirt to almost everyone, but no one really captured his heart.

Until this one man came into his life without warning.

~

Vox Akuma, a voice demon.

Whom he met at the guild alliance meeting.

Shoto almost caused a scene when he learned about that. Though, the demon in question was way too human, in contrary to his inhumanly beauty.

Shoto would just kill the demon on the spot, however, Vox had gained everyone's trust, but him. He just couldn't trust a demon joining their mission and decided to keep his eyes on the demon to make sure that he didn't launch a sudden attack.

Keep your friends closer and your enemies closer. That was what Shoto basically did.

The demon found him amusing, just like having a cute little angry puppy following him around. Instead of shooing him away, Vox approached the wary young man with his sly yet gentle smile.

"Why don't we get to know each other?"

~

Little did Shoto know, that was the start when his life turned upside down.

He was brokenhearted.

"Shoto, I really like you as a friend. I don't want to ruin our friendship"

Vox's voice was soft and caring but it stabbed Shoto right in the heart.
Vox never really called his name, but 'baby' or 'babe'.

Everyone in the alliance knew that Shoto and Vox are partner in crime, and got used to the playful flirtatious and sweet act between the demon and the demon slayer. They never really went beyond kiss and touching which they always did in front of everyone just for laughs.

But no one knew what Shoto had in mind. He had fallen for the demon, head over heels.

The rouge quickly swallowed back his tears and laughed loudly.

"Hahahah fuck... I guess I took too many shots... Can't think straight... Need to throw up"

Shoto quickly made his way out from the party that alliance was holding, back to his cabin, ignoring Vox's offer to help him.

He was out of breath, his heart was about to burst as he locked the door.
Leaning his head against the locked door while still gripping the handle, that's when he noticed his tears fell down to his hand.

"....Shoto you dumb stupid fuck" he cursed to himself under his hoarse voice.

Shoto realized that he went too far and misunderstood things. He thought the other man had the same feeling, but he was slapped back into the reality.

It was just too good to be true if Vox had the same feeling.

"I thought we were special but I guess I was wrong..."

Shoto forced himself to chuckle, laughing at his own stupidipity before he broke into sobs.

"....I really do love you, Vox"

~End~

Notes:

I got the idea for this fic when Shoto literally said "A new arc for me, I cannot establish" about Vox during his streaming

The next chapter is "Unnoticed" but both can be read as standalone
