Chapter Text
Luz stood beaming with joy in the middle of the large marketplace in Bonesborough. She hadn't been to Bonesborough so often that she didn't freak out with excitement at the sight of the witches and demons. She had been in the demon realm only briefly, for a few hours a couple of times during the summer, and since yesterday she was finally here permanently. She looked around excitedly and found more and more interesting creatures and places that she really wanted to get to know better. Only a snap of Eda's fingers made her turn her attention back to Eda.
"Hey Luz, are you even listening to me?" "Yes Eda, I was listening to you" "Okay, so remember, don't talk to anyone and keep a low profile. And if someone does approach you and ask you how you got here, be sure to say that you saw some kind of portal and woke up in a lake of water and blue liquid." "Ok Eda, will do." "Ok, so come on, we have some things to do". Eda walked with Luz and King along the marketplace and strolled purposefully to a small store, which was called Mr. Elixir. Eda was given a vial of a golden yellow liquid that Luz couldn't place, but she was pretty distracted with everything right now.
"Luz, come with me, we are going to get the ingredients for the food for the next few days, I need you to help me and tell me what you can and can't tolerate." They went to several stalls and bought different foods, which Luz could probably tolerate. They continued walking down the street when Eda saw two children who looked familiar. The boy was a little shorter than Luz, was also probably a little younger, and had dark brown hair. She couldn't remember his name exactly, but she knew who he was. He had often tried to ask her about the human world, even though she herself was no expert, but had previously only sold some junk to make ends meet.
The girl sitting next to the boy on the bench was just as hard for her to place. Eda only knew that the girl was very interested in plants and it seemed that she had a good character. The girl was taller than the boy and had dark gray-blue hair. Then Eda had a brilliant idea. Luz should not have much contact with adults, it could quickly lead to problems with the Emperor, but with children she should make friends, especially since Eda knew from stories that Luz had not made friends in her old school. "Luz, you see those two kids up ahead?" "Yes, what about them Eda?" "Go to them, you said you wanted to make friends here and this is your first opportunity. I'm going for a quick walk, I'll meet you here later."
Luz looked at Eda desperately, but she gave her a little push in the direction of the two sitting on the bench. Luz inwardly told herself that she had to go through with it now. The two were just talking when the boy spotted Luz. He looked at her tensely as she approached. The girl didn't know what was going on at first when Gus stopped responding to her, but when she turned to look in the same direction as Gus, she noticed the girl coming closer. She was only a few feet away when Gus jumped up and ran toward her.
Luz didn't understand what was going on, she wondered if she had done something wrong. "You're human aren't you?" "Uh, yes" "Wow, is it true that there are giraffes in the human world? What do humans eat for breakfast?" Luz really didn't know what was going on now, but luckily the girl now joined in "Please excuse me, this is Gus, he loves to find out everything about the human world. And my name is Willow and who are you?" "My name is Luz" "Nice to meet you Luz, would you like to join us on the bench?"
Luz nodded and the three sat down on the bench. Willow looked at Luz in wonder "Luz, you're human, so what are you doing here?" "I want to attend the school here and become a strong and powerful witch." Said Luz full of emotion. "Do you mean the witch side? We are students there too" "Really? You have to tell me everything, what is the school like? What is the daily routine like?" "Well the teachers are actually quite nice unless they have a bad day. The daily routine is actually quite simple, in the morning there is breakfast, then you have a little time and then the lessons begin, depending on the track you do, it lasts longer or shorter and then you actually have free time until dinner and then again some free time."
Luz wondered, Eda had never mentioned anything about tracks. "Tracks?" "Yes, depending on the type of magic you want to learn, you pick a track. I'm in the plant track and Gus is in the illusion track. Then there are others like Abomination, Construction, Beast Keeping, Potion, and more. Which one do you want to do?" "They all sound exciting, I'll have to figure it out first. But I'll talk to Eda about it sometime."
Now Gus got involved too "Eda as in Eda Clawthorn?" "Yes, I'm staying with her until Monday." Gus nodded in understanding. "So what's the human world like?" he now asked curiously. "Quite different. We have schools too and it's relatively hard to explain, you just have to have seen it. People are often annoyed and there's less to explore than here." Willow then came back with a question "Luz, would you like to see some magic". "Yes with pleasure" Willow stood up and turned a small magic circle and immediately a plant rose from the ground. Willow was able to control it completely and Luz couldn't get out of her amazement.
Now Gus also wanted to show his talent. He also turned a magic circle in the air with his finger and various things appeared. First a writing appeared in the air, with the content "Nice to meet you Luz". After that, an otter appeared, which Luz was especially happy about because she liked otters. And finally, he made himself appear again. Luz compared the two and found no difference. This really surprised Luz, but she was already looking forward to the magic she would learn in Hexside.
She really got along well with them. But even the most beautiful conversations had to come to an end. Eda came back to pick Luz up. But before they said goodbye, the two wrote Luz their names for Penstagram and told her that they could call her anytime. Luz said goodbye and hoped they would see each other again soon. "And did you make any new friends kid?" asked Eda laughing as she flew with Luz and King on Owlbert towards the Owl House. "Yeah, those two are really nice. They told me a lot about school."
After a short time, they ended up in front of the Owl House and Luz helped Eda carry the groceries into the house. When this was over, the two sat down on the sofa and Luz asked Eda important questions about the school, which Eda tried to answer as best she could. Luz was glad that Eda had managed to convince her mother, even if her mother had to be lied to in order to do so. But if her mother had known the truth, she would never have let her go. Luckily, she had met Eda, otherwise she would still be at her old school, where she would always be ridiculed by the other students because of her ways.
Eda got up and was about to go to the kitchen when she felt dizzy. She had to sit back down on the sofa and it was clear that something was wrong. "Luz quickly get the Yellow Elixir from the kitchen". Luz immediately ran for it. She found a wide variety of vials on a shelf and was glad to see that a Yellow Elixir was also there. She immediately ran back to Eda, who was visibly busy trying to stay lucid. King sat beside her anxiously "Eda are you alright, what's wrong? Luz do something" Eda indicated to Luz that she should pour the elixir into her mouth. Luz did so and just a few seconds later Eda was feeling better. "Eda, what happened?" asked Luz excitedly.
Eda sighed "A curse has been on me for many years. Normally it is easy to control, I just need to take this elixir at certain intervals and then it should be fine. Otherwise, I would turn into an owl creature." Eda intentionally used owl creature instead of owl monster, which would be more accurate, to make Luz less afraid. "But this time I forgot all about it because of all the excitement. But now it should be fine again. My Bile sac should have restored the magic well enough that there's no danger in the next few days, as long as I don't overdo it." Luz wondered "Bile sac?" "Yes, the bile sac is the organ in a witch's body where magic is created." "But I'm human and as far as I know I don't have a bile sac, so how am I supposed to use magic then?" " I've already thought about that. We'll take a trip to the library, the answer to the question might be hidden there."
