Work Text:

The window curtains flowed erratically in the wind. Within those careless movements Marie found an elegant dance; one that reminded her of the one she had with a certain boy. The thought of his name brought a flood of confusing emotions to her mind: frustration, confusion, and a warm feeling. She missed him. He promised her he would go see her concerts, but as she played her violin for the overwhelming crowd, she failed to find the familiar redhead amongst them. It had been the first one since he had left her; she could understand if he couldn’t make it, but that so passionate promise he had made lost the shine it had in her heart when she first heard it. The quiet of Marie’s bedroom left space for her loud thoughts which prevented her from dreaming of a universe where Raphael had taken her with him.

She continued to watch those curtains fly around the open window. The first few nights after Raphael left, she thought of how maybe one day he would show up at the balcony, his gleaming eyes sparkling when meeting with Marie’s.

This far-off fantasy sparked some energy into Marie’s somnolent mind. She decided to walk over to the balcony off a whim, toying with the idea of her Romeo greeting her after his prolonged absence.

The balcony was relatively small, but Marie found that cozier. As she wrapped a strand of her hair around her finger she again thought of Raphael: but this time a more depressing thought. She had always considered him to be different from her other friends in a way she couldn’t describe. Would he ever think of Marie that way? Would he be too busy to even devote that much of his time to being with her? She pushed those thoughts out of her head, out of fear of them spiraling.

Just as she felt the feelings of fatigue tugging at her she heard a sound. Were those…shoes? She lived on the third floor of a palace so nobody could be walking this high up.

“ Marie..”

Her head turned so fast she thought it could’ve snapped. The voice sounded like the one she had been longing to hear for so long now. Once her heavy eyelids fluttered open to greet this strange nighttime visitor, she saw him.

“ R-Raphael? “

His face showed a look of awkward happiness and a tinge of shame. He knew that he missed her concert, he tried his hardest to make it in time but the distance from the concert hall was too great. He cursed himself silently when the sky started to darken and he wasn’t even halfway to his destination. His heart broke thinking of Marie looking for his face in the crowd. He had missed her everyday so badly to an extent where Charlie could take one look at his face and accurately guess when he was thinking of Marie; which led to many angry looks.

“ I know I missed your concert and I’m really sorry for that…I tried my hardest to get there on time, but I know that you still played beautifully even if I wasn’t there to hear it-“ he apologized while jumping down from his place on the windowsill; only to be immediately enveloped in a soft hug from Marie. He was grateful that she couldn’t see his face for is she could, she would think he resembled a tomato.

“ I- I missed you. “ They said in unison forgetting to hold back their feelings.

Marie released Raphael from her arms and timidly watched the ground beneath her, trying to think of something to say that weren’t the ones she truly wanted him to hear.

Before she could get another word out she felt Raphael’s cool hand shyly grasp her own. A shocked expression was the only thing she could muster in response and her head moved up to meet Raphael’s.

His free hand grazed Marie’s flustered cheek as he maintained his gaze on her. He no longer wanted to come up with mindless small talk to fill the silence as he used to do when they were alone together. All their memories came back reminding each other of all the things they never said before he had parted.

He could lose himself in her eyes dreaming of all the things he wanted to do with her. He promised himself he would come back permanently to be with her, the only issue was telling Marie why he stayed just for her.

The adrenaline rushing through both their bodies pushed them to do something they never thought possible. A kiss. So soft but filled with passion, one that ruined the invisible barrier between friendship and a foreign thing they had never experienced before.

Both had worries for the future but they all had dissipated for that fleeting moment. A world of complicating and difficult decisions awaited them but they let themselves have this happiness.
