Work Text:
Corus lived his entire life at nightfall. That was when the humans would rest and he could get what he needed. He only got caught when the humans changed the clocks so nightfall was earlier. He still lived his life that way though. It was the only time he felt he could exist.
It was nightfall when his captor brought someone else. They were close friends, but he lived during the day. His friend said that day made humans happier. Corus couldn’t get behind that though. He would always feel too seen during the day desperate to hide in the shadows at night again.
It was nightfall when things crashed and they fell to the ground. When something moved their prison and the two ran. They slipped into a bag that neither recognized as their ‘owner’s’. They were trapped there hearing a feminine voice for hours. When they reached a house it was nightfall again, but they slipped away unseen. At least they thought they did.
This time Zeke pushed for them to go out during the day again. This human was more active at night, it did make sense. Corus didn’t like it though, he liked seeing this human. She was pretty and looked like she would be kind. He couldn’t stop wondering if her hands were warm, if she’d let him live freely even if she knew he was there. Her life seemed to start at nightfall just like his own.
It wasn’t nightfall when he got sick. When their home was torn into and that beautiful face stared at them. He missed a lot of nightfalls during that time. He wasn’t wrong about her hands though, they were warm and soft. She was kind too, it didn’t take long for him to see through her. She let them stay and he started to notice she liked the darkness brought by nightfall too.
He was happy when she’d come home from contracts. She almost always arrived at daybreak falling asleep quickly. He would climb up to spend the day sleeping with her, her heart a welcome sound. He’d wake up when she moved, carefully picking him up from where he chose to stay that night. Her piercing pink eyes looking over his small form and checking for any chance she had hurt him. It would be time for them to begin their lives. Two who found solace in each other, darkness, and starting their lives at nightfall.
