Work Text:
It had been a week since Chloe died. Rory decided to visit her parents in Hell before going back to spend more time with Trixie. Rory landed on the ground and walked down the corridors of Hell towards the office door. Rory thought for a moment and sighed, wondering how her parents would react. She knocked on the door. The door opened and Chloe was standing there. “Rory?” Chloe asked.
“Yes mum, it’s me.” Chloe gave Rory a hug. When they separated, Rory looked somewhat confused. “Why did you say my name like that? It’s only been a week since you died.”
“Really? Only a week? That means it’s been 28 years down here.” Rory looked surprised.
“Really? How long was dad down here for in the 40 years that he was gone?”
“57,760 years.” Rory looked horrified that she had put her father through that.
“Can I come in? I want to apologise.” Chloe opened the door wider and Rory entered. Chloe turned around and saw Lucifer slamming a door.
“Lucifer?” Chloe opened the door in the office that led to the penthouse and entered the room. “Lucifer, are you O.K.?” Chloe asked.
“I’m conflicted,” Lucifer stated.
“Why? Our daughter’s here to see us.”
“It’s nice to see her again, yes. But she took my life from me. We were happy up there. Then she made me leave for a reason that wasn’t necessary, causing me to be down here alone for nearly 60 thousand years.”
“I understand that Lucifer. You didn’t have to leave, Rory would’ve been better if you had stayed. But we promised her that we wouldn’t change her.”
“A promise that I regretted making as soon as I left. You see, you had her, your other daughter and all of our friends. I had NO ONE. I was only able to occasionally visit you and I visited Daniel & Charlotte a few times when I paid visits to Heaven. So again, she took my life from me.” Rory then walked in.
“I’m sorry dad. I wish I hadn’t made you promise that.” Lucifer shook his head.
“It’s O.K. We’re together now. We can be a family.” Rory smiled, but then looked sad. “Are you O.K.?” Lucifer asked.
“I took your life from you…” Lucifer nodded.
“I know. But it doesn’t matter now.”
“But I can fix it. I could go back in time and stop my past self from causing you to leave.” Lucifer & Chloe looked at each other and then back at Rory.
“You could, yes. But should you?” Chloe asked.
“Your lives would’ve been better if we were a happy family for those 40 years that you were gone for.” Lucifer nodded slowly. “Mum, I know you don’t want me to, like you said to me… you wouldn’t change a thing.” Lucifer turned to face Chloe.
“You really said that?” Chloe nodded. “I thought you would’ve wanted to have had a life where we were together up there.” Chloe looked slightly ashamed.
“I know, I would’ve rather have had a life where you were with us. But Rory became the way she is because of what happened. I inspired her.”
“You did inspire me, but I ruined everything.”
“No you didn’t.” Lucifer walked over to the bar and poured himself a drink.
“Lucifer, you’re being unbelievably quiet,” Chloe pointed out.
“I’m just trying to wrap my head around you saying that you wouldn’t change anything.”
“O.K. Lucifer, I would’ve preferred to have had a life where you were always there by my side. But the reason I said that is because of how long we’re here in the afterlife for. It’s a lot longer than I was on Earth for.” Lucifer nodded.
“That’s true.”
“It’s still my fault that you didn’t get to be on Earth together. I made you stick to a promise that, I now realise, wasn’t necessary.” Lucifer nodded.
“Yes Rory. It is your fault.” Chloe looked at Lucifer in a ‘why did you say that?’ sort of way. “But it doesn’t matter now. We can be a family again. A proper one where we don’t have to be apart from each other.”
“Which we would have been from the start if I hadn’t forced you to leave.” Lucifer looked at the floor, looked back up at Rory and sighed.
“Rory. It’s clearly obvious that we’re not going to be able to change your mind. So I will say… I hope you succeed.” Chloe looked shocked.
“Really? You want her to do this?”
“I’d rather her not do this. But it’s clearly obvious that we can’t stop her. And she’s also right. Our lives would be better if I was there. And anyway, if she succeeds… we could still end up back here. At some point when we’re on Earth or when we’re in Heaven afterwards, we could realise it again and be back down here. The only difference being that we had a happy life together on Earth.” Chloe nodded.
“That’s true.” Chloe turned to face Rory. “Rory, if you want to do this… I won’t stop you. But please… be careful. And don’t hurt your past self.” Chloe said reluctantly.
“Mum, it’s O.K. If I succeed… we won’t even remember this because it never would’ve happened.” Rory took a few steps back from Lucifer & Chloe after hugging them.
“I love you Rory,” Lucifer & Chloe said at the same time.
“I love you both.” Rory then vanished and returned to the past to stop her past self from separating her parents.
Rory found herself in the corridors of Hell 40 Earth years earlier and began searching for her past self. After searching for some time, she saw her past self walking towards Michael to ask for his help in killing Lucifer. “Hey!” future Rory shouted. Past Rory turned around and looked shocked. Future Rory walked forwards. “You have to stop this,” future Rory stated.
“Why?” past Rory asked. “Our father abandoned us.”
“It’s our fault that he leaves.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Us being here is what caused Lucifer to leave. We then return to the future and mum dies. A week later, we’re going to visit them in Hell, which is where Lucifer is and where mum chose to be after she died. And our father is not so pleased to see us because we took him from baby us and our mum.” Past Rory looked downwards and then looked back up.
“Why would I believe any of that?”
“Because it’s the truth.”
“Well I don’t believe you. Why did you come back here anyway?”
“To stop you. If we’re never here, Lucifer will never leave and our lives will be better because we’ll have both of our parents.”
“Mum inspired us to be what we are. Why would we change that?”
“Because we’ll have our father. Mum will still inspire us, but we’ll have our dad too. He’ll always be there for us. Would you not want a future where he’s there?” Rory shook her head.
“When I was younger, yes. But now... now I want him to die.”
“Well I can’t allow that,” future Rory said as she pulled out a demon blade.
“Oh. Is that how this is going to be?”
“Mum made me promise not to do this. But like I said to her: If I succeed… neither of us will have ever existed. A new Rory will take our place. A Rory that had both of her parents during her time on Earth.” Past Rory pulled out a demon blade too.
“Very well then. I guess you’ll have to kill me.” The two Rory's charged at each other. They launched attacks with their respective blades but they always dodged or defended the other’s attacks. They both then took off into the sky and fought above the corridors of Hell. Future Rory then grabbed hold of past Rory and threw her onto the ground. Future Rory landed safely and walked over to her past self. Past Rory stood up and began to charge at her future self.
“Stop!” Past Rory stopped. “Please. If you just walked away from your revenge now, this wouldn’t be happening.”
“Never! My father must die!” They continued swinging the blades at each other, including the blades on their wings. After more attacks, there were multiple cuts on each other’s arms and faces. They continued attacking until the fatal blow. Future Rory had stabbed past Rory in the stomach with her blade. Past Rory fell to the ground. Future Rory fell to her knees to comfort her past self. Both of them started crying.
“I’m sorry,” future Rory said.
“It’s O.K. At least now there will be a Rory that was happy. Unlike us.” Future Rory smiled slightly. “I just wish we could see that Rory’s life.”
“Me too.” Past Rory’s eyes closed and she stopped breathing. She was dead. Future Rory continued crying and let out a loud scream which could be heard for miles. She then looked down and saw her past self fade from existence. She then looked at her own hands and saw them fading. Both of them faded from existence because now there would be a Rory that grew up with both of her parents.
40 years later in this new future… It had been a week since Chloe died. Rory decided to visit her parents in Heaven before going back to spend more time with Trixie. Lucifer woke up to the sight of Chloe lying next to him wearing one of his shirts. Chloe then woke up.
“Good morning…” Chloe said as she moved her right hand down Lucifer’s cheek.
“Good morning Chloe.” They smiled.
“I’m so happy we get to be together in the afterlife forever,” Chloe stated.
“Me too. 6 months up here doing whatever we want, then we’ll be in Hell for the equivalent of 6 Heaven months, which of course is 722 years and then we'll be back up here again. That’s what we promised Amenadiel and Azrael.” Chloe smiled.
“I like that. It’s just the fact that it’ll be 722 years from our point of view, but only 6 months from everyone else’s. It'll take some getting used to.”
“True. But there’s nothing we can do about that. That’s just how it works.” Chloe nodded and kissed Lucifer. “So what do you want to do today honey?” Lucifer asked.
“Well Rory said she was going to visit us today.”
“Really? I suppose we better get dressed then.” After they got dressed, Rory arrived.
“Mum. Dad.” Rory said whilst smiling.
“We’re so glad you came here to visit us, Rory,” Chloe said.
“You’re welcome.”
“How’s Trixie?” Lucifer asked.
“She’s still mourning.” Chloe nodded sadly. “One day, she’ll be up here and we can be a family again,” Rory said.
“Yes, we can,” Chloe said whilst smiling.
After they spent the day together, Rory returned home. “I suppose I should be getting back. My wife and I are having a night in. We're having dinner with Trixie.”
“That’s nice. Have fun,” Lucifer said.
“I will.”
“Give our regards to Alex and please tell Trixie how much I miss and love her.” Rory smiled.
“Will do.” Rory hugged Lucifer & Chloe.
“We love you Rory,” Lucifer said.
“I love you both too.” Rory took a few steps back, brought out her wings and returned to Earth.
“Are you O.K.?” Lucifer asked.
“I’m fine. I just miss Trixie.”
“It’s O.K. One day, we’ll be a family again like we were on Earth.” They both stood up and returned to the penthouse. “Shall we, Mrs. Decker-Morningstar?” Lucifer asked as he held out his hand. Chloe smiled and took Lucifer’s hand.
“Lead the way.” Lucifer & Chloe then went to bed and had sex.
Rory returned to Earth to her wife and sister. “How are they?” Alex asked after Rory kissed her.
“They’re happy up there.”
“Good,” Trixie said.
“Listen, T. Mum misses and loves you. She wanted me to tell you that.” Trixie smiled whilst a tear emerged from her eye.
“Thanks sis.”
And one day, they were a happy family together in the afterlife… forever.
THE END
