Ambiguity

Summary:

The blush throws her off, however. It's the first time she's elicited that kind of reaction from Seolhee, and it's been a good couple of years of working together. And there's many explanations for blushing, but the ones Ami know of doesn't seem to match the situation. It's not like Seolhee has a crush on her; that would be ridiculous.

Notes:

14. "No one's ever ... for you?" "Never."

Work Text:

Ami doesn't mind wearing her wig most days, she just doesn't prefer wearing it when she's around Danbi. She doesn't like showing up with her identity hidden, as if it's a bad thing. And she's gone to enough trendy places to know that brightly colored hair isn't an anomaly as it once used to be. Sure, her particular shade of white isn't the kind of white you can get by bleaching, but whatever. The crowd is inconspicuous enough that it's okay.

So she isn't exactly sure why Seolhee's staring. She hasn't stopped staring since Ami walked in to the Agents of Atlas base with Danbi. Ami heard the irregularity in Seolhee's breath, but she can't quite place why Seolhee's breath stopped then whooshed out all at once.

She pats her hair down and checks her phone, if only to give herself something to do as Danbi goes to grab her bag. Seolhee hasn't moved from her spot.

"Your mask," Seolhee hesitantly, finally, says.

Ami realizes with a start that this might be the first time Seolhee has seen her without one. A bit embarrassed, her hands automatically come up to her face before lowering. "What about it?"

"You're not wearing it?" Cautiously, Seolhee steps forward.

"No, I'm taking Danbi out. It'd be a bit weird if I wore my mask." Ami forces a chuckle, tamping down her nerves. She doesn't know why she's nervous, just that she wants Seolhee to keep looking at her for a little while longer.

"I see..." Seolhee trails off and offers a shy smile. "You look good."

Ami glances down at her outfit and shrugs. Her white button up and dress slacks are barely anything of note. "Thanks."

A light blush dusts Seolhee's cheeks and she clears her throat before spinning away from Ami and heading to the kitchen. Of course Ami follows.

Seolhee idly floats a snowflake in the palm of her hand as she leans on the counter. Ami stops in front of her a step or two away, and she barely catalogues the determination or resolve that flashes through Seolhee's face. The blush from earlier is forgotten when -- suddenly -- Seolhee's inches away and Ami is the one who forgets how to breathe this time. Her heterochromatic eyes are distracting. Really distracting.

"Your eyes are really pretty," Seolhee comments, breath ghosting along Ami's cheeks. Ami gets the urge to press their foreheads together, but she refrains from doing so.

"Oh," genuinely surprised, Ami pulls back the slightest bit. "Thank you." She forgot it's Seolhee's first time seeing her actual eyes, hidden as they are beneath her mask. Maybe that's why Seolhee was staring?

"Did you put makeup on?" Seolhee studies her some more and Ami swears her gaze drops lower to her lips for the briefest second. Is she... flirting?

"Yeah," Ami focuses on answering the question instead. "We're going to the mall. I've heard it's fun."

Seolhee's brows knit together. "No one's ever taken you to the mall before?"

"Never."

"That's so..." Seolhee searches for a word and gives up. She just nods to herself and brushes past Ami. "I'm coming along."

"You are?"

"Let me just get my hat and mask."

"Wait, why?" Ami asks.

"I can't let you newbies go off to a mall on your own for the first time." Seolhee grins. "There's a strategy for shopping, you know."

No, Ami did not know. And it's probably a good thing Seolhee tags along, because Ami wouldn't know where to start at a mall. Ami has the instincts of a killer and yet she finds herself melting to Seolhee's soft gaze. "Okay, fine."

She promises herself to buy Seolhee something at the mall later as a thank you.
