Chapter Text

Kim Dokja was dying because of a run-in with an assassin. Before he could finish her off he was killed by the very hands of the emperor. The assassin’s body was cast aside like trash. The emperor ran to the dying woman's side and held her close. Looking over the wound that wouldn’t stop bleeding.

With a weak hand, she pulled out the letter she would have normally sent by pigeon under the guise of a loyal informant. The letter detailed important information about the opposing lands in the East and how they planned to take over the North.

"Your Majesty." Kim Dokja greeted weakly. "Here, take it. It's important." The emperor hesitated before taking the letter. She felt relieved as he opened it. She watched as his eyes skimmed through her words and the information she gathered. The familiar penmanship.

"You…" He tossed the letter aside and tried in vain to stop the bleeding. She winced at the pressure. Her own hands came down to rest on the emperor's large ones.

"It's ok." She smiled weakly at him.

"Dokja." His voice came out strained. The emperor was upset. But when he called Kim Dokja by her name her heart skipped a beat.

"You call me by name now? How cruel, we've been married for quite some time." She teased, although it took a lot of energy to do. She raised her hand up to cup her husband's cheek. She felt something wet land on her face and thought maybe she was hallucinating. But more drops of wetness continued to fall. She focused her gaze on the emperor's eyes and found him crying. She’s never seen him cry before, her eyes widened. Was he truly upset? Or was he sad that he just lost an important informant? Not saying a word she wiped them away from the corners of his eyes.

She thought that this was the most intimate they’d been since their first night together.

His hand didn't leave her wound. It was for naught because she could feel herself slipping away. As death was awaiting her, welcoming her like an old friend.

"You can't die." He ordered.

"Hey. Don't be so upset. This is life, things happen and soon death awaits us." She wiped away as many of his tears as she could.

"Don't waste your tears on me. I don't regret anything." She stated firmly. "I don't regret dying now. Or loving you. Because Yoo Joonghyuk, loving you has kept me going. I'd do everything over again if it was for you." She smiled to herself. "Even if you don't love me."

Before he could say anything she pulled Yoo Joonghyuk closer with the little strength she had left and kissed the man she loved with all her being before finally succumbing to her injuries. The hand that caressed his cheek fell into her lap as she went limp. Leaving the emperor alone with the corpse of his dead wife, the empress.

He lifted her lifeless body into his lap. Holding her close as if she were just sleeping. He buried his face into her hair and let out a heart-wrenching sob.

"I love you." He wept. "You don't know how much."

Yoo Joonghyuk thought of how much of a fool he was for letting her slip through his fingers. It wasn't true that he didn't love her. He loved her so much that he thought keeping her at a distance would be the safest for her.

He was wrong and his wife died thinking he didn't love her. All the time they could have spent together was wasted because he thought that it was for the best.

She was also his loyal informant. She wrote to him anonymously with information about noble families running illegal businesses and about possible moles within the palace walls amongst other important secrets. He never knew until today. She was making sure that things would work out in Yoo Joonghyuk's favor all this time.

She wanted to be closer to him too and maybe this was her way of doing so.

He regretted it so much. Not telling her he loved her when multiple chances arose. Their first night together was something he would never forget. After the wedding, they were alone together and for the first time, he saw such a vulnerable side to his wife. Blushing and being flustered at the tiniest of things. He remembered just how well she fit in his warm embrace as they had their first and only night together.

Leaving her the next morning, deciding it'd be best to stay away from her and sleep in different rooms from then on. He remembered the sad look on her face before she masked it with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Back then he thought it was for her own good. To keep her from being tied to him. If he seemed distant then no one would use his wife against him. How wrong he was as he was holding onto his dear wife's lifeless body. If only he were closer to her then maybe, just maybe this wouldn't have happened.

The funeral was a large affair. There were so many people in attendance that Yoo Joonghyuk didn't realize how big of a role his wife had played in the lives of the people who lived under his rule.

She was dressed in white, her dark hair fanned out like an inky waterfall as she lay peacefully in the coffin. Her hands were resting on her abdomen as she looked as though she were sleeping.

Many people wept at the loss of the empress. The royal guard had assembled and they too couldn't keep their composure for long.

Some people were glad she was gone. Nobles who had not approved of her and people who didn't think she was a worthy empress were even happy she was gone.

The empress's mother looked at Yoo Joonghyuk with disdain. How could he not save her precious daughter? Lee Sookyung would never forgive him for what happened to Kim Dokja. Yoo Joonghyuk couldn't blame her, he too could never forgive himself.

People placed white roses inside her coffin. Yoo Joonghyuk was the only one to place a red one inside. He placed it between her hands and with one last longing look, he placed a kiss on her forehead.

Onlookers whispered things.
"I thought they didn't have the best relationship."
"That's so sad. The poor emperor."
"This is all an act. We all know how he was distant towards her. She couldn't even produce an heir."

The whispers continued but Yoo Joonghyuk didn't care. His wife's funeral shouldn't be soiled by these words. He tuned them out and instead looked at her one last time. Kim Dokja looked like she was dreaming, he wished that whatever she was dreaming about would be a happy one. Much nicer than the reality she had lived in this life.

They buried her in the palace garden where she enjoyed tea and a good book. It was one of the loveliest places within the palace. A place fit for the empress to be buried.
Yoo Joknghyuk couldn't part with her that easily. So having her close even in death was his way of coping.

He thought about all those years lost where he should have been loving her. Maybe even started a family of their own by now if he wasn't so foolish.

Their marriage was arranged but Yoo Joonghyuk couldn't have been more glad for it. He'd fallen for her, flaws and all.

Her cunning nature, how she was sneaky and smart but didn't know how much she had him wrapped around her finger. She wasn't afraid of pushing his buttons. Annoying as she could be, Yoo Joonghyuk found it endearing. Even if he didn't emote his feelings he would show them through small gestures and actions.

Before they got married, he got his hands on a book she wanted from a neighboring region. He lied and said he didn't need the book anymore and that she could have it.

He found the very same book well-read in the empress's chambers after the funeral had ended. The spine nearly fell apart with how much she read the book. The pages flayed at the edges. She must've loved the book greatly to have read it to the point that it was nearly coming undone.

He almost broke down. A simple gift like this was something she treasured. He should've given her more. Jewels, clothes, flowers, anything she wanted.

Yet she never asked for anything. Always telling him that she had more than enough already. What use was having more?

He would've given her everything if it would make her happy. If she wanted something he'd make it happen some way or another. If she wanted the world he'd give it to her.

They used to spend so much time together. But once they got married that lessened exponentially.

They had shared meals here and there. One of the few times where they'd be together just the two of them. He would listen to Kim Dokja talk about something she read in the library or just about how her day had been. Like how she went out into the garden to have tea because the weather was so nice.

Even if he had an indifferent expression, he always listened to what she had to say. When she asked him how he was doing his words were always along the lines of busy or working on some royal business.

Appearing as if he was brushing off her questions or comments. The servants in the palace had seen this happen and were sad for the empress.

Even at large banquets, they appeared distant. As if the empress's love was one-sided. They'd only dance once the whole night and even then their movements were stiff. Mechanical as if they were obligated to dance. Not because they wanted to. But Kim Dokja always smiled when they danced as if these little moments were the most important to her and they were. Because she got to be close to her husband even if it was to keep up appearances. He never complained when she would step on his foot by mistake.

She would always turn in early for the night and leave the hall back to her chambers. Leaving Yoo Joonghyuk alone. Rumors spread that Yoo Joonghyuk didn't care for the empress or that the empress might've found a lover and that was why she was turning in for the night. The last rumor was quickly redacted. But other than that the rumors of how distant they were and how the emperor didn't seem to care for the empress were the ones to grow.

This was his plan. By being the emperor the target on his back was large and therefore extended towards the people around him. Kim Dokja was one of them as she was the empress and one of the people he loved the most.

Look where that got him. He was now a widower ruling over land that felt empty without her. Without her by his side, Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t know what he was living for.

After the funeral, his sister came to give him her condolences.

"Did you find out who killed her?"

"An assassin. It looked like he came from the Salvation Church." He muttered. His fist clenched tightly. Knuckles turning white at the force. It was not yet the right time to go against the church. They didn't have enough evidence of the corruption happening within.

It became clear that the assassin was after Kim Dokja from the start, striking when she was alone. The assassin would’ve finished her off if Yoo Joonghyuk wasn’t already on his way down that direction. Losing those last few moments with his dying wife.

Yoo Joonghyuk had decided that he would crush them.

"I see. We'll make sure to bring the church down then." Yoo Mia nodded to herself. "You should get some rest. You look terrible Oppa."

"I will rest once the matter is resolved." He was going to make sure they suffered for even daring to kill his beloved wife.

As time went on Yoo Joonghyuk became much colder. No hesitation to kill anyone who got on his nerves. The throne room had to be cleaned more than a few times daily. He was sleeping less and less.

The Mad Emperor was what they called him. Without the empress, Yoo Joonghyuk became a tyrant.

The captains of the royal guard became fiercer. Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung became brutal fighters. Their Empress was murdered and they would do anything to give her justice. They followed Yoo Joonghyuk being his sword and shield.

Before that Jung Heewon was Kim Dokja's sword, and she'd failed her. She should've stayed with her but Kim Dokja had assured her at the time that it would be alright to take the night off. She trained nonstop alongside Lee Hyunsung who also blamed himself for the empress's death.

She believed in them and they thought they'd failed her. But in reality, Kim Dokja wouldn't have thought that at all. She knew they were reliable and trustworthy. It was just a sick twist of fate that she died the way she did. In the arms of the emperor after succumbing to the wounds dealt by an assassin.

They'd help Yoo Joonghyuk bring justice to the corrupted church.

The Salvation Church was run by high priest Nirvana.

The man was obsessed with Emperor Yoo Joonghyuk. Constantly asking for an audience with him or sending gifts on behalf of the church. Each time Yoo Joonghyuk refused.
Like some scorned lover, Nirvana kept at it. The empire knew that the relationship between the church and the emperor wasn't very good. But that seemed to only apply to the church-run by Nirvana.

It was only a matter of time before the straw broke the camel's back.

It was in the form of a letter sent on the anniversary of the empress's death that finally shattered it.

My deepest condolences Emperor Yoo Joonghyuk. It was truly a tragic end to Empress Kim Dokja. Such a horrible accident.

But now you can spend more time doing other things. Surely you can come and confide in the Salvation Church. Repent your sins and regrets.
Weren’t the rumors true that you cast her away? You must be happy now that she’s gone. You never really loved her, did you? I say it must’ve been done in your favor.

Getting rid of something you never loved in the first place.

I await your visit, Emperor Yoo Joonghyuk.

High Priest Nirvana.

Yoo Joonghyuk crumpled the letter in his hand and threw it away. The force was so strong that a measly paper ball became a weapon, a high-speed flying projectile that made a dent in the wall.

How dare he think that of his wife. How dare he think he could get rid of her like she were trash. A favor? Some favor this was. He never wanted this. The letter itself was like a confession to her murder.

“Tell the knights to get ready. We’ve found the culprit.” Yoo Joonghyuk was pissed beyond belief. He was going to end that pitiful excuse for a human being if it was the last thing he did.

The church awaited them. The delusional followers of Nirvana were standing at the ready. They seemed to have caught wind that the emperor would take down the Salvation Church. Mages were lined up ready to defend the place where they sought out refuge under a false priest. Whose only purpose seemed to be making Yoo Joonghyuk’s life miserable.

The battle raged on. Both sides suffered heavy losses. Yoo Joonghyuk cut down anyone who was in his way. He was a man on a mission to avenge his wife. Nirvana awaited him without being phased. He smiled at the emperor, a smile that disgusted Yoo Joonghyuk who grit his teeth and tightened the hold on his sword.

“You.”

“I can’t believe it took me sending that letter about the Empress to get you to see me.”

“Tell me. Were you the one to send that assassin?” He glared at Nirvana.

The priest before him just laughed haughtily.

“So what if I did? I did you favor, didn’t I? And yet you and your army are killing my followers.”

“I’m going to end you.”

“I got rid of someone you despised. Surely you’d compensate me for all the trouble. Join the Salvation Church, my dear Emperor. Become one with it, together we can rule the empire.”

“Never. You took someone precious to me and now I’m going to make you suffer.” He declared and rushed Nirvana. Sword pointed at the other with deadly precision.

Nirvana only cackled as he dodged the attack. Yoo Joonghyuk almost forgot that the priest before him was a powerful mage. But it didn’t matter, Yoo Joonghyuk would kill the bastard.

“So all the rumors were false. I see. So maybe if I’d captured the Empress instead of having her killed we wouldn’t be fighting like this.” He shot a bolt of lightning at Yoo Joonghyuk who easily dodged the attack. “If she joined the church would you have followed me?”

“Don’t you dare mention her in front of me.” He growled.

“You know looking back she was quite beautiful. Who knows she might’ve fallen in love with me if I’d taken her.” He cackled. Nirvana was riling Yoo Joonghyuk up. Trying to make him slip up. But Yoo Joonghyuk was a spiteful man and with his sword sliced Nirvana’s arm. Leaving behind a nasty cut that started to drip with the crimson of his blood.

“Silence. You don’t deserve to speak of her. I’ll have to cut out your tongue.” Yoo Joonghyuk’s attacks started to speed up. Slashing and cutting and overall maiming the priest before him.

With every cut and every wound, Nirvana just seemed to laugh more and more. He kept attacking Yoo Joonghyuk with all the power that he had.

Even in the end when Yoo Joonghyuk had Nirvana on his knees. Blood dripping down his face and the lacerations littering his body, he didn’t stop smiling. Even when Yoo Joonghyuk was about to end him with a final blow.

“If I die here you’ll have to die with me.” Nirvana pulled out a hidden dagger and stabbed Yoo Joonghyuk in the stomach. The emperor faltered at the sudden pain but grit his teeth as he made to kill the man before him.

With a thud, Nirvana’s head fell away from his body. Decapitated swiftly.

As Yoo Joonghyuk made to pull the dagger out of his abdomen his legs gave out. His skin started to get hot as if he was suffering from a fever.

The dagger was poisoned. He spit out the blood that started to pool in his mouth. So this was how he would die. He sat down on the floor, leaning against one of the support beams inside the church, and hoped as he was dying that he would see her again.

But death didn’t come easily as a hooded figure dressed in dark robes approached him.

“Yoo Joonghyuk,” the figure called out. “Don’t you want to go back?”

“Back where?” he replied weakly.

“Don’t you want to make amends with what you did in the past?” the figure asked.

“What?”

“Don’t you want to make her happy?”

“Who?”

“Your beloved wife of course. I can send you back to the time before she died.”

“Nonsense no one has the power to do that.”

“But I do and I can only do this once. So you better not mess it up. Make Kim Dokja happy you idiot.”

“I…I promise.”

“Good. Because if you don’t I’m going to beat you up. Die Yoo Joonghyuk.” The figure stated before shooting him with a burst of magic.

To go back in time. To make things right. To show Kim Dokja that she was loved. To show her she was worth more to him than she ever thought. Yes, he promised he would make her happy.

Notes:

Who could the hooded figure be? I didn't want to change Kim Dokja's name for the sake of genderbend. Also, I'm pretty sure Dokja is a unisex name.
My first fic for ORV, I hope it's okay.
Instead of doing homework here is what my mind came up with. Sorry if it seems rushed. Updates will be sporadic. I hope you all enjoy it.

Chapter Text

Yoo Joonghyuk woke up with a start. Sweat was dripping from his brow as he looked around to see he was in a familiar room. His own. Was it all just a terrible dream? Was he really back? He was pulled out of his thoughts by Lee Hyunsung who had a sheepish expression on his face as he opened the door just a crack.

"My apologies for disturbing you, but you're going to be late for breakfast. Or would you rather eat in your office?"

"No, I'll go to the dining room." He dressed hastily, the collar of his shirt was crooked and he buttoned his shirt incorrectly. Overall he looked utterly disheveled.

"Are you alright your Majesty?" Lee Hyunsung asked, looking concerned. Yoo Joonghyuk usually made sure that his appearance was presentable no matter the occasion. It was very much out of character for him to rush out of the room looking frazzled.

He received no reply as Yoo Joonghyuk just brushed past him without another word. He seemed to be walking faster than usual as well.

He made it to the dining room in record time barging through the doors.

His breath hitched as he saw her. Kim Dokja was alive and well. She looked over at his disheveled form and her face fell a little bit. Was she misinterpreting his appearance for something inappropriate?

"I just had a bad dream." He stated as he sat down in a chair next to Kim Dokja. He quietly redid the buttons on his shirt and noticed that his wife was sneaking a glance at him. He hid the urge to smirk. Opting to ask her about her morning. Which surprised her and many of the servants nearby.

"I had a good morning actually. I even had a good dream. But I can't remember what it was about. Sorry to hear you had a bad one." She eyed him strangely as if he'd grown a second head.

"Do you have any plans after breakfast?"

"..."

"Well?"

"I was planning to go out to the garden later. I found this new book in the library and thought it would be a good read."

"Perfect. I'll clear my schedule to join you."

"I beg your pardon?"

"You heard me. I will join you out in the garden later. Please inform me of what time you plan to go. I'll be sure to be there promptly."

She stared at him and suddenly she placed the back of her palm on his forehead. Her touch was something he missed greatly. He fought the urge to bring her closer. Drag her into his lap and smother her with kisses.

"Are you alright? Do you need to see the royal physician?"

"I'm perfectly fine. Is it impossible for me to take a break from running an empire?"

She dropped her hand and immediately Yoo Joonghyuk missed her warmth.

"No, I suppose not. It's just that you're always so busy that I seemed to have forgotten that you need a break from time to time as well." She went back to eating her breakfast silently.

Yoo Joonghyuk watched her and relished the fact that she was alive. Eating well and not dead or dying in his arms.

He must've been staring for too long when Kim Dokja paused from her actions and looked at him.

"Is there something on my face?" She touched her lips and his eyes immediately fell to them. "Your Majesty seems out of it today. Was the dream that bad that you're acting out of sorts today?" She sounded genuinely concerned. Which Yoo Joonghyuk was happy about. She seemed to care a lot about him.

"I thought today would be a good change of pace."

"I see." She continued to eat whilst glancing occasionally at him. When their eyes would meet she'd hastily look away and try to cover up her embarrassment. He found it cute, sometimes she'd sputter and he would have to force down a laugh or smile.

It seemed that his actions had changed rather drastically all of a sudden. He would have to take things slow. But it was difficult when he wanted nothing more than to smother his wife with his love. And maybe be smothered in return.

He wanted to whisper words of endearment, he wanted to make her flustered, he wanted her happiness, he wanted to love her without restraint. There were many more things he wanted but these were at the top of his list.

Once breakfast was over they parted ways. Yoo Joonghyuk made sure that Kim Dokja would tell him what time to meet her in the garden.

"Send someone to inform me of when you plan to head to the garden. I will be waiting." He walked away briskly. Leaving Kim Dokja with a puzzled expression.

She was confused. Just yesterday her husband was his normal distant self. Answering curtly and being busy all the time. Yet today it felt like she was eating with a stranger. Maybe the dream he had was so bad that it shocked him to the point where he became a different person. What nonsense.

Her husband was acting strange, that's for sure. But she had to admit the small change was nice. She enjoyed it although it did feel surreal at times. Breakfast was a bit weird.

She could've sworn she saw the corner of his lips twitch upwards several times during the whole meal. She smiled to herself entertaining the thought. But didn't Yoo Joonghyuk dislike her?

She didn't think too much about it and started to prepare to go out to the garden. It was a wonder that he wanted to join her. She made sure to have someone inform him of joining her there for lunch. If the emperor wanted to join her then so be it. It also looked like Yoo Joonghyuk was happy to take a break from working. So if it made him happy then Kim Dokja would honor his wishes. For his happiness was also hers. Because she loved him dearly. Even if he didn't feel the same way.

Yoo Joonghyuk paused in his writing of a few legal documents as he felt a disturbance as if he was misunderstood somehow. He shook off the feeling and couldn't help feeling excited to spend time with Kim Dokja in the garden.

Alone in his office, he was able to check the date. They were only in their second year of marriage with their anniversary coming up soon. Kim Dokja would die the sixth year into their marriage. There was a lot he needed to prepare. With the knowledge that he had about the future, he would be ready. Four years would surely be enough time.

His goal now was to strengthen his relationship with Kim Dokja and make sure she knew he loved her.

Nothing could sour his mood right now.

"Your Majesty. You've received another letter from the Salvation Church." A servant informed him. That did it. That right there soured his mood.

“Burn it.”

“Your Majesty?”

“Burn the damned letter.” He glared at it as if the paper committed a cardinal sin.

“Yes, your Majesty.” The servant left to promptly burn the piece of paper that offended the emperor.

Just then Jung Heewon arrived with a note from the empress.

I plan to spend lunch in the garden. Join me there.

KDJ

It was straight and to the point and signed casually. He smiled to himself. He should’ve noticed the penmanship sooner. Whilst his dear wife may have tried to change it as she played his informant, the angle and the place in which she signed the letters always stayed the same.

Jung Heewon stared at him. He quickly schooled his features and told her that he will see the empress then.

She quickly bowed dumbstruck and went to relay his message to the empress.

Once lunchtime rolled around Yoo Joonghyuk met Kim Dokja in the garden. Two chairs were placed beside a table that was filled with desserts and tea. There were also sandwiches filled with meats and veggies to go along with it.

One of the chairs was occupied and seeing Kim Dokja look so content in the garden made his heart flutter. The gentle breeze flowed around her and made her hair sway in the wind. She tucked a few stray strands behind her ear before she noticed Yoo Joonghyuk.

“Your Majesty. You showed up faster than I expected.” she smiled.

“I said I’d be here, didn’t I?” He took a seat in the empty chair across from her and just admired the sight of her.

“You did. You don’t really care for sweets, do you? Don’t worry some of these tarts are savory so you don’t have to worry about pretending to like them.”

“You really thought of everything, didn't you.”

“Of course, what sort of wife would I be if I didn’t take my husband’s tastes into account.” She replied.

The corner of Yoo Joonghyuk’s lip twitched upwards.

It was quiet after that as they ate their lunch. Kim Dokja would usually talk about the books she’s read or her day but now she seemed to be at a loss of words. She looked at him from time to time with a suspicious expression.

Of course, she would be suspicious. Yoo Joonghyuk’s personality took a different turn after the two years they’ve been married. This was also the first time that he joined her like this on his own accord. It was nice, it made Kim Dokja feel things. Maybe he was just doing it to keep an eye on her. Either way, she enjoyed his company.

“Our anniversary banquet is coming up soon.” He brought it up on impulse.

“Yes, it’s been two years already? Time sure does fly.” She stated wistfully.

“Since it’ll be our anniversary do you want to do anything before the banquet?”

She looked taken aback by his suggestion. Her eyes blinked owlishly at Yoo Joonghyuk. She paused for a moment to think.

“I guess I would like to go down to the market? It’s been so long since I’ve gone. I wonder if they have a new shipment of books from the Western Empire.”

“We can go together then.”

“Really?” She seemed to jerk at the word together.

“Yes, together.”

“As in you and I. Together. In the market.”

“Yes, I think that we’ve established that so far.”

“Just needed to clarify. Well, I’ll be turning in.”

“Already?”

“Yes, suddenly I feel very tired.”

“I can escort you back to your chambers then.” He got up out of the chair and moved to take her hand, but she immediately shot up from her seat.

“No need! I’ll have Heewon-ssi take me.” The woman in question immediately appeared by her side and bowed toward Yoo Joonghyuk.

“Your Majesties. I’ll take Empress Kim Dokja back to her chambers.”

“See I’m in good hands! No need to worry.” She waved and left with Jung Heewon, leaving Yoo Joonghyuk with his arm outstretched. Now he was reaching for air.

He sighed and dropped his arm. It seemed that he had to work harder.

His eyes then landed on the book she left on the corner of the table in her haste. He picked it up and held it up to his lips to hide the smile that was forming. It was an excuse to see her again unprompted.

“Heewon….what’s wrong with him. He’s acting so different. He actually seems interested in me? It could be a fluke.”

“Or his majesty finally got the stick out of his ass and is realizing he cares about you." Jung Heewon stated bluntly as she watched her empress pace back and forth in her room.

"If it helps I even saw him smile at the note you sent him."

"No, it must've been a trick of the light. He wouldn't smile over something as small as that. He was probably glad he had a set time for a break."

"You never know?" She shrugged.

"But he wants to spend time with me? Are the rumors getting out of hand? Does he want to appear closer to me because of his image as emperor?"

There she goes. Overthinking things again. Jung Heewon thought as she continued to watch Kim Dokja making up excuses. She would have to consult with Lee Hyunsung later about this whole ordeal.

“Or the emperor actually cares about you? He must’ve gotten some sort of a wake-up call then if he’s changed this drastically.”

“He’s not being blackmailed is he?” She suddenly thought up. “Or what if a dark mage is controlling him? Is that it then? Is he under some sort of a spell? Quick we have to find a way to break it!”

Jung Heewon grabbed the stressed woman’s shoulders and looked her in the eyes.

“Slow down. Take a deep breath. Yes just like that.” Kim Dokja followed her orders. “Better?” The empress nodded, Jung Heewon then pat her back a couple of times before completely letting go. “Good.”

“But what if-”

“Kim Dokja you worry too much, also I think you’ve been reading too much for your imagination to be running this wild.”

“You know how I love a good story.” She mumbled, looking slightly embarrassed for being called out.

“Besides would it be so hard to believe that he must’ve fallen for your charm.” She teased. “I mean you’ve been married for almost two years now and you’ve known each other a little before then.”

“Still…this is a lot to take in.” She admitted. Just yesterday it seemed like Yoo Joonghyuk wanted nothing to do with her and now he was clearing his schedule to spend time with her. So Kim Dokja had reason to think something was amiss.

“Maybe I am just overthinking things.”

“Yes, you definitely are. And isn’t this a good thing? You love him, don’t you?”

“Immensely.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

“Because the idea of being loved by him seems impossible. This marriage was arranged anyways.” She smiled sadly. It made Jung Heewon’s heart hurt to see. If only she could knock some sense into the man that’s causing her empress to have such heartache.

“That doesn’t mean you love him any less. Besides a lot of people end up falling in love with the person they were arranged to marry.”

“Not my parents.”

Jung Heewon fell silent, before continuing. “You and Yoo Joonghyuk aren’t your parents. You two are completely different. Just have some faith in yourself Dokja.” She slapped her back in good nature. Kim Dokja winced at Heewon’s monstrous strength but didn’t say anything about it.

“But if that bastard causes you any harm you know where to find me.” She smiled maliciously.

Kim Dokja laughed. “I’m happy to have such a person by my side. You are a great sword Jung Heewon, but an even greater friend.”

“Aww, Empress!” Jung Heewon gushed and smothered Kim Dokja in a hug. Even if Kim Dokja didn’t know it, Jung Heewon knew that the Empress was very much loved, if not by the emperor then by the people in her life that were touched by her charm and charisma.

Notes:

I couldn't wait to post another chapter. It was all I could think about. My priorities are out of whack, I should be doing homework but all I want is to write about Joongdok. Like this is a problem. Help.

If the characters are OOC my apologies. Poor Dokja, overthinking things and underestimating the amount she's loved. Hope you enjoy.

Updates may not be this fast in the future as I try and get my schedule together. :')

Chapter 3: Getting Closer

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The book was lying on his desk. He stared at it before deciding to read it. Might as well since the empress had planned to read it in the garden before hastily retreating.

It was an invigorating tale about a knight who needed to kill the last remaining dragon in the kingdom to elevate his status. But along the way meets a mysterious woman who becomes his companion. In the end, it turns out the woman was the dragon all along. He couldn't kill her. Not after all the adventures, they'd shared together. It wasn't a happy ending. The dragon was controlled by an evil sorcerer and thus had to be slain.

The knight dealt the finishing blow and watched as she disappeared into ashes, leaving behind her crystallized heart. Yoo Joonghyuk had to admit it was sad. He didn't know the empress enjoyed these kinds of stories.

After reading it he decided it was time to return the book to her. It has been a while since he'd seen the empress. In reality, it had just been two days and he always saw her during meal times. So he was really just deprived of Kim Dokja's attention.

He headed towards her chambers, book in hand. He knocked on the door and was met with sounds of shuffling feet.

The door slowly opened and his eyes locked on hers. Her mouth opened as she was getting ready to say something but no words came out.

"I just came to return your book. You left it back when we had tea together." He held the book out in front of her and she took it from his hands, the tips of their fingers brushing together for a moment. She held the book to her chest.

"Thank you for returning it."

"It is quite a story."

"You read it?"

“I was curious. I wanted to know what kinds of books you liked to read.” He shrugged as if it were no big deal.

“Oh.” He noticed her cheeks get red. “Did you like it?” She was curious to see his answer.

“I did. The ending however could’ve been done better.” He admitted. The thought of losing someone, especially like that, was something he didn’t like to think about. He was just glad that he wasn’t the one who ended her life by his hand during that time. If he did, Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t think he could live with himself.

“I see. I’ll keep that in mind when I finish reading it. But I’m glad you seemed to enjoy it. Then I’ll see you later your Majesty.” She bowed and slipped back into her room. Leaving Yoo Joonghyuk to stare at her door. He wanted to knock again and ask for her time but it seemed that she wasn’t ready. He clenched his fist, he could still feel the tips of her fingers as they brushed together when he returned her book to her.

He sighed and went back to his study. Slowly, he would take things slow. Even if it killed him, he wanted her to know he loved her and wanted to give her time to come to realize that.

Like a dejected puppy he sulked back to his study, ignoring all the strange looks he'd received from the people he passed by.

Inside her room, Kim Dokja clutched the book tightly until her knuckles turned white. She almost forgot about it until Yoo Joonghyuk appeared out of nowhere. He could’ve called for someone else to deliver it to her, but he hand delivered it himself.

It was hard for her to believe that her husband’s reclusive nature decided to take a 180. Actively seeking her out and delivering something as insignificant as a book. Even going as far as to read it.

It was overall strange. She wondered if this was just a fleeting phase that the emperor would grow tired of. She secretly hoped he didn’t. She actually enjoyed having the emperor’s attention for once. The two years that they’d spent "together" was lonely for her. Having one-sided conversations and chasing after a man who didn't seem to love her.

What made him change so suddenly? Maybe he decided he needed to appear like a loving husband to the people of the empire. It wasn’t a bad idea, there were many who favored the idea of a happy couple ruling together.

Kim Dokja just couldn’t wrap her head around the idea that Yoo Joonghyuk actually cared. That he was capable of affection directed to anyone who wasn't his sister.

That reminded her to send a letter to Yoo Mia who was currently attending an academy from a city that was just a day's trip away. Just to check up on her and see how she was doing. She knew Yoo Joonghyuk sent letters to Yoo Mia too, he may not show it outright but he cares immensely for his one and only sister.

His secretly caring nature was one of the reasons she fell in love with him. She sighed to herself and opened the book she was grabbing so tightly. She was curious to see why he didn't like the ending. So she spent the rest of the day reading the returned book.

From then on, Yoo Joonghyuk would join her once or twice a week for tea and they had all of their meals together. Moving his schedule around just to spend just that extra bit of time with her.

He noticed that Kim Dokja still looked a little suspicious here and there but managed to be relaxed in his presence. Which he saw as a win.

They also made it a habit to read a book and share their thoughts after the other was finished with it.

"The female lead was a fool. Why did she end up with the man who caused her so much pain in her past? He's the one who ordered her execution."

"Yes but her love for him won out in the end. Sure she had so many other men she could've chosen but the heart wants what the heart wants." Kim Dokja argued.

"The second male lead was the best choice. He listened to her and they got along well together. He brought out the best in her.”

“But the second lead had his flaws too. He was too obsessive don’t you think? In his eyes she could do no wrong. What if she decided murder was appropriate to tie up all her loose ends?”

“It’s practical if you know how to get away with it.” He stated nonchalantly.

“I don’t know if I should be scared or impressed that you have such knowledge.”

“You have to do what you can to dispose of trash.”

“I still like the main lead. I think his actions were just caused by a bunch of misunderstandings that lead to the main character’s demise.”

As they bickered about the book they were reading Jung Heewon watched alongside Lee Hyunsung. The two were both captains of the royal guard and had bonded more by talking about the empress and emperor. Mostly on their relationship.

"It's obvious that the emperor has feelings for her. He even takes breaks now to meet with her." Lee Hyunsung had whispered.

"Right? Kim Dokja is stubborn; she really thinks the emperor doesn't love her. She's an over thinker. Sometimes I want to push the two together and just..." The two guards continued to watch them argue over the main character's ending.

"Lock them in the same room together until they sort out their feelings?" Lee Hyunsung suggested helpfully.

"Exactly. But I don't want to pressure Dokja-ssi. We both know they love each other but they don't know it. The emperor probably knows since he's trying to actively get closer to her. Could've started much sooner though."

"I agree but this change was very sudden."

"Yeah, I almost didn't recognize him when he smiled while receiving a note from her majesty."

"He told me to lead training in his stead because he wanted to spend time with her." Lee Hyunsung informed her.

"But I can't complain. She seems to be happy albeit for all the wrong reasons."

"Our empress is just like that." They both smiled fondly.

"Hey, Heewon-ssi do you wanna go out for drinks later?"

"Really? Hyunsung-ssi wants to have drinks with me?" She looked at Lee Hyunsung and saw his ears redden.

"You don't have to, I thought since we have an off day we could spend some time together."

"Yes." The large man perked up at her words. He looked like a dog who was given a tasty treat.

"Great. We'll meet outside the barracks then." He smiled and Jung Heewon felt butterflies. They settled into comfortable silence as they watched the emperor have a fond look in his eyes with the empress none the wiser.

Yoo Joonghyuk was having fun. He enjoyed the conversations that flowed between the two of them. Talking about books. He never thought he'd enjoy reading as much as he did with his wife. She seemed to come alive when she talked about a book, a story she truly enjoyed.

The way she'd get so excited when explaining why she loved the story or why she hated it was cute to him.

Yoo Joonghyuk wanted so badly to hold her. Kiss her lips and give her everything she wanted.

"Empress, would you like to go out on a stroll with me?"

"Yes." She slowly warmed up to him, even if she thought this was all for show. Which wasn't. Kim Dokja just couldn't comprehend the fact that it was possible that her love was reciprocated.

Yoo Joonghyuk held his arm out for her and after a moment she took it. Which made the emperor very happy. She looped her arm around his and together they walked in the garden. It was late and the moon looked so beautiful. Illuminating the garden and whoever was in it.

The light cast a faint glow on Kim Dokja's skin and Yoo Joonghyuk thought she looked ethereal.

They were silent for a majority of the stroll. But that was okay, they didn't really need words to enjoy each other's company.

Kim Dokja was there at his side trying to think up excuses as to why he wanted to take a stroll and why he offered his arm to her. She wasn't minding the affection. She truly enjoyed it. It was just that she was in denial.

Thoughts of what if this is all for show? How could he like me? Or am I worthy of this affection? Were swirling around in her head. She was pulled out of her thoughts as a raindrop landed on her nose.

It suddenly began to pour.

"What? How is it raining? Wasn't the night clear just a second ago?" She sputtered at the torrents of water. Her hair was already soaked.

Something warm and heavy was dropped on her head. Before she could do anything she was wrapped up in the cloak and carried bridal style.

Kim Dokja peaked through the fabric and looked up. She saw Yoo Joonghyuk looking back at her before he tightened his grip and ran through the garden back to the palace.

She clutched onto his shirt afraid she might fall. But Yoo Joonghyuk would never let that happen.

They made it back to the palace in record time and Kim Dokja was still in his arms. She couldn't help but admire Yoo Joonghyuk's rain soaked self. His white shirt had become sheer after getting wet. Clinging onto him like a second skin. Her eyes started to trail down his chest and lingered there. Her grip on his shirt tightening just a bit.

Her eyes trailed back up to his face and met his gaze. She blushed because she was caught openly ogling at his defined chest. She let go of his shirt and asked to be put down.

"...should take a bath." He mumbled begrudgingly, putting her down.

"What was that?" Her face seemed to flush at his words.

"We should take a bath."

"A bath? A hot bath?"

"Yes."

"You want to bathe together?!" She squeaked.

He wanted to scream yes but bit back the urge to do so. He reminded himself that he was going to take things slow. "I meant it as the both of us should take baths so as to not catch a cold."

"You said "we". I thought that meant you wanted to take one together?" The thought of them taking a bath together filled Yoo Joonghyuk’s mind. His ears visibly reddened at the images that popped up in his head. He wanted to, really badly. Just relax in the tub with his wife leaning against his chest, with nothing separating them. He clenched both hands into fists. He held himself back. Now was not the time, no matter how much he wanted to pick her up and run to the bath, he was going to be patient.

“That wasn’t what I meant.” He lied.

“Ahahaha.” She started to laugh nervously.

“It’s fine. It seems I’ve made you feel uncomfortable. I’ll have someone run a bath for you. You can make it back to your room on your own, yes?” Kim Dokja just nodded dumbly. “Then I will see you tomorrow. Good night, empress.” He bowed and went on his way.

Kim Dokja was left waiting until a maid informed her that her bath was ready. She took her time getting in and asked the maid to hang the cloak on the wall to dry. She sank herself deep into the hot water. Trying hard to forget what she said to the emperor.

“Stupid. Me and my big mouth.” She was mortified by what she’d just suggested. Not knowing that was in fact what the emperor wanted to do.

After that, she tried to avoid him to no avail. He was persistent and acted as if what she said never happened. Which she was grateful for. So they were back to their routine. Eating together and when the emperor had any spare time he would spend it with her. Whether it be drinking tea together, or discussing a book they both read, Yoo Joonghyuk would spend it with Kim Dokja.

As time went by their anniversary banquet was just around the corner and with it would come a few surprises. Welcome and unwelcome.

Notes:

I hope this chapter isn't too all over the place. Also, I sprinkled in some Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung interaction because I ship them as well. Yoo Joonghyuk is trying his best. Kim Dokja is oblivious as ever. Yoo Joonghyuk horny gripping. How long will he last?

Chapter 4: Market Outing

Chapter Text

There appeared to be some progress in their relationship. Yoo Joonghyuk was happy to say that Kim Dokja hardly hesitated to grab a hold of Yoo Joonghyuk's arm when he held it out for her to take. She didn't seem to shy away from him as she did in the beginning. Conversation with her flowed easily. When it came to affairs regarding the empire she was knowledgeable about what was going on or what was probably going to happen.

She was strategic and offered up information disguised as gossip. Since they were spending so much time together there was no need to send letters this time around. Although a part of him did miss receiving them, he enjoyed getting the information from her in person.

Yoo Joonghyuk caught on quickly when she'd make an offhand comment about a noble family she really didn't seem to like. Once looking further into it he found that the family was doing illegal trade with the South. The family was handled after that. Stripped of their noble power and banished from the North.

She was helping when she didn't need to be. Yoo Joonghyuk was capable of settling things himself. He'd already lived years with such information all thanks to the knowledge he accumulated in his previous life. He was nonetheless thankful for her information. It gave Kim Dokja a reason to talk.

One thing after his whole regression to the past he suffered from having too many nightmares. Those were the worst nights. He'd dream about Kim Dokja dying again and again. Sometimes in the same way that he remembered from his previous life or in various, more gruesome ways.

In one dream they were taking a stroll and an arrow came whistling in their direction. The empress pushed him out of the way and they toppled onto the ground. The arrow was sticking out of Kim Dokja's chest as blood started to spill out of her mouth.

"Thank goodness you're okay." She said while smiling through the pain, before collapsing in a bloody mess all over Yoo Joonghyuk.

Another night he dreamt that she was kidnapped and held for ransom. He "paid" them back, that's for sure. Massacring the people responsible for her kidnapping only to find her body in a closet. Beaten and broken, her kidnappers had done unspeakable things to her and once she was of no use stuffed her in a closet.

She was still alive, holding on for him.

"I knew you'd come." She whispered weakly before drifting off to sleep forever.

It was an endless cycle, she seemed to die because of him in the nightmares he kept on having. The worst part of it was that it all felt so real. As if he’s lived through each of those scenarios somehow. He wondered for a split second that maybe being too close to her was a bad idea. Before immediately shooting the thought down and burning it because he'd never seen the empress this happy before.

They were just nightmares after all and they would never become a reality. Not if Yoo Joonghyuk had a say in the matter. He'd prevent her death, as long as he’d live he’d protect her no matter what.

Kim Dokja was getting used to Yoo Joonghyuk's strange behavior. She wasn't going to lie but she slowly got used to her husband's apparent affection.

She still thought this was all a ploy to better his public image. Jung Heewon thought that she was too oblivious to see what was right in front of her. She’d talk with Lee Hyunsung about it.

The two had gotten closer and every time they had a day off they'd spend it together.

"I swear she's stupid. Or at least stupid when it comes to the emperor." Jung Heewon stated after she took a swig of beer.

"The emperor changed so much. Just the other day he said training was going to be postponed because he was going to take a stroll with her."

"I know! The man used to be a total workaholic. Now he's more of a Dokja-holic. The emperor can't get enough of her. He's like an overgrown dog or maybe a cat, when it comes to her.”

"But how can you not like the empress? She's fun to talk to and she's a great listener. She lends her ear to all the stories we tell her."

"You're right. As insufferable as she can be, she's really loved by a whole lot of people."

"Heewon-ssi you love her too?"

"Sure what's not to love? She's like a sister to me. An annoying one, but a sister nonetheless."

"She really is." Lee Hyunsung stared at his cup of beer. "Heewon-ssi, I know that we're going to be on duty at the anniversary banquet, but I was wondering if you wanted to patrol together?"

"Do you really need to ask? Of course, I will, you teddy bear." The beer must’ve been getting to her if she called Lee Hyunsung that.

His face reddened at being called a teddy bear by Jung Heewon. Who was in turn smiling at his reaction. For a man that was built like a beast he really was sweet like a puppy. Cute even with the way he blushed at her words.
"Aigoo. Our Lee Hyunsung must be embarrassed." She pinched his cheek fondly and ordered them a new round of beers. They were in a good mood until some comments reached their ears and broke the nice atmosphere.

"The emperor is really something. He's so handsome yet he married such a plain-looking woman." One of the bar patrons had commented.

"Right? Could've done so much better besides they still don't have an heir yet and it's already been two years. There must be something wrong with her." As the two patrons continued to bad talk their empress, both Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung decided to teach them a lesson.

They left the bar feeling refreshed after taking care of the trash. Sure they were banned from the bar for a month but it was all worth it. Nobody talks bad about their empress like that.

The day of the anniversary banquet was in 4 days. They decided to go to the market since that was where she wanted to go. Yoo Joonghyuk wouldn't go back on his word.

On their trip to the market, they dressed in inconspicuous clothes as to not draw attention. Yoo Joonghyuk wore a simple long-sleeved white shirt with dark pants. He wore a dark hooded cloak that didn’t draw people’s eyes. Whereas Kim Dokja wore a plain blue dress with her hair braided into a crown on her head. She too wore a cloak, this one being white. You could say they were matching.

Today they weren’t the Emperor and Empress of the Northern Empire but a couple trying to enjoy some time out together.

“Look at all the street food.” She seemed to drool at the sight. Stands selling skewered meats, cookies, and candied fruits lined the square. There were stalls selling different goods ranging from jewelry to crafting materials.

The people in town all appeared happy and energetic. It was a nice change of pace after spending time within the palace walls for so long.

“It feels so nice to grab some fresh air.” She stretched and didn’t notice how some men in the square had their attention captured by the woman.

One glare coming from Yoo Joonghyuk underneath his hood deterred them right away. The killing intent rolling off of him in waves also helped. Kim Dokja ignored him in favor of taking in the sights.

Everyone was having a wondrous time in the square. She made him eat the different food from the many stalls surrounding the area. He couldn't say no to her when she looked like she was having such a good time.

"All the food tastes so good." She gushed while eating sugar-coated fruit. "I'm happy we got to do this before our anniversary banquet. I feel so free." She smiled wistfully.

"Is there anything else you wanted to see?"

"Oh, hmm. I wanted to buy some more books. I know we have a whole library in the palace…" she trailed off.

"Buy as many as you would like. Money isn't a problem." He crossed his arms and looked down at her as if this was no big deal.

"Really?"

"Of course, how could the empress not afford something she wants? If you want it then buy it. Or tell me, I'll get it for you."

"You…" She looked at him in thought. Here he was saying she could have whatever she wanted. But she tried to rationalize it as Yoo Joonghyuk showing off his power as emperor and nothing more. But they were incognito, there was no need to show off his power like this to her and only her. She didn't knwo how he'd do anything to make her happy. Anything.

If she wanted the Eastern territory he'd conquer it for her. If she wanted the most expensive crystal mine, he'd give it to her all because she asked. For Kim Dokja, Yoo Joonghyuk would give her the world.

They walked around some more until a certain something caught his wife's eye.

"Look! They have a bookstall!" Without thinking she dragged Yoo Joonghyuk by the arm towards the stall. He was really happy that Kim Dokja was the one to initiate contact first. He saw it as a win and was happily pulled towards the books his wife was excited about.

"Welcome, welcome." The vendor greeted them. She was a short woman with a beauty mark underneath her left eye. Her hair was cut short and she seemed familiar to Yoo Joonghyuk somehow.

"What books do you sell?"

"Many novels ranging from adventure and romance." She grinned at the woman and then eyed Yoo Joonghyuk distastefully. Which confused him because he didn't know what he did wrong to cause such a reaction.

"Do you have any books with a handsome protagonist?" Kim Dokja asked and Yoo Joonghyuk had to stop himself from getting jealous of a fictional character. It was hard when some of the conversations they had about the books they read resulted in his wife gushing over how handsome the main lead was.

"As a matter of fact, yes." She pulled out a box set if you will from underneath the table. "It's a tale about a supreme king who keeps on regressing. He's trying to reach the ending of these quests but he keeps failing. So when he dies he goes back to a time when the quests start again. It’s still ongoing." There were more than 7 books included in the box.

"Oh, that sounds like something I would read. How much?" Her eyes glittered with anticipation of reading such a story. He found it cute that she got excited over the books.

"Hmm I don't know, these are quite expensive." She smiled cheekily.

Kim Dokja dropped a satchel of gold coins on the table with a large thunk.

The vendor's eyes widened. "Is this for real?"

"Yes. Is it too little? I have more."

"Are you sure it's worth this much?" Yoo Joonghyuk eyed the vendor who seemed to be swindling his wife.

"No, this is more than enough. Would you like me to hold onto the books for you? I'm not closing up shop anytime soon. You two can enjoy the market some more."

"Yes, that would be wonderful! Thank you…ah…"

"Han Sooyoung. A pleasure to be of service." She held out her hand to take Kim Dokja's, when the other woman stretched her hand out the vendor took it and then pressed a kiss to the back of her hand. This made Kim Dokja a bit flustered while Yoo Joonghyuk was seething. He snatched his wife's hand from out of the vendor's.

"Didn't mean any harm, sir. Just being polite to such a fair lady." She grinned cheekily. Kim Dokja flushed further and Yoo Joonghyuk had the urge to squish Han Sooyoung. "Enjoy your time in the market. The books will be here waiting for you."

"Thank you again Han Sooyoung-ssi." Kim Dokja smiled. She also pulled her hand out of Yoo Joonghyuk's grasp. Much to his disappointment, he wanted to hold it a little longer. "Ooh I'm gonna go buy some meat skewers." She walked ahead of Yoo Joonghyuk, leaving him with Han Sooyoung.

"You must be happy to be back, no?"

"What do you mean?" He raised his eyebrow at the woman.

"Your Majesty. How does it feel to be back before the Empress's untimely demise?"

"You…" The hooded figure that sent him back was standing right before him. No wonder she seemed familiar. He glared at her.

"Hey, is it okay to be rude to the person who essentially gave you another chance?"

"How?"

"I'm a powerful sorceress. Or was. My magic is all but gone thanks to that spell I cast. So there aren't any more chances left. You got that Yoo Joonghyuk. This is your only chance."

"Why did you help me?"

"Hmm. I didn't do it for you. I did it for the Empress."

"Why?"

"Let's just say that she helped me when I was down."

"Elaborate."

"Geez, you really are a hardass. Fine, I did some writing on the side and well the empress was the only one who believed in me. She wrote me so many letters telling me how much she enjoyed the series of books I was writing so far. When everyone else stopped she was the only one who kept on reading. So she was my faithful reader."

"Hmm."

"Hey, it's true. She wasn't even able to finish the ending. I was finally done with the story but she died before she could read it. So I want her to have a good life. A happy one this time around. She seemed so alone in those letters, I think my stories helped her. No thanks to you. Are you showering her with affection huh? Making her happy as you promised?"

"I'm trying."

"Well try harder. Practically gave up my powers for you two to be happy. She could've done so much better. I could've made her happy."

"Han Sooyoung." Yoo Joonghyuk ground out.

"What? I have eyes. She's cute in her own way. Too bad I'm already spoken for. You're lucky I didn't snatch her away from you."

"Impossible."

"Hey don't be so full of yourself. Sure you've got your looks going for you and you're the emperor to boot. But if you can't make your own wife happy that's pretty sad."

"I said I'm trying. I want to take things slow for her sake."

"Sure and not because you think you’ll mess things up?"

"I'm positive."

"Hmm, hurry along then. Make her happy Yoo Joonghyuk. Because if you don't I'll make your life a living hell."

"Not being able to make her happy would mean I'm already in hell."

"Whoa, that was so tooth-achingly sweet that I think I got cavities. Maybe I should write that line down in my next book." She joked.

He glared at her and she put her hands up in surrender.

"Just be good to her and protect her from whatever is to come. Even if you have knowledge of what’s to come it may be different this time around. So keep that in mind Yoo Joonghyuk. Now go have fun with your wife." She shooed him away from her stall.

He walked away from the cheeky woman and went to look for his wife. His timing was uncanny as he saw her standing in between two children and a couple of grown men in an alley. They sneered and eyed her up and down. Big mistake to be doing that where Yoo Joonghyuk could see. He was going to make them pay for even looking at his wife let alone harassing children.

"Now, now girlie, what are you going to do about those two brats? They belong to us."

The two children gripped her clothes looking a little worse for wear. They were covered in dirt and had a few scrapes and bruises.

"Haha! Not cooperating are you? Well, how about we take you along with the kids? Looking at you up close I think you'll sell for a pretty decent amount." The thug walked closer to her and she protectively put her arms out shielding the children.

Yoo Joonghyuk was pissed. He was going out with his wife only for it to be ruined by a couple of low lives looking for trouble. Before the man could even lay a hand on his wife. He punched him with such force that he flew into the opposite wall.

This shocked the other men who were about to advance as well. One glare from Yoo Joonghyuk sent them scrambling, they peeled the other man off the wall and carried his limp form away comically.

Once they were out of sight Yoo Joonghyuk turned to see Kim Dokja squatting down to look at the kids.

"Are you two okay? Do we need to look for your parents?" The two kids shook their heads, they were probably orphans judging from their appearance. The two kids looked at Yoo Joonghyuk warily.

"Don't worry about him, he isn't going to hurt you. He's my husband." She smiled at them warmly. Yoo Joonghyuk preened at her words. Just being called her husband was enough to cause his previous mood to lighten.

“Please don’t leave us. Those bad men were trying to sell us.” The girl spoke up.

“Human trafficking and the like are banned in the Northern Empire. These men will be dealt with swiftly.” Yoo Joonghyuk stated firmly. He’d deal with the issue personally. Those men almost laid a hand on Kim Dokja and the fact that they were even going as far as to sell children. Unacceptable, not while Yoo Joonghyuk was emperor.

“How do you know?” The boy asked defiantly. He glared up at Yoo Joonghyuk as much as he could muster.

“I just do.” He shot back.

“You two look hungry. How about I get you something to eat?” Kim Dokja asked the children who focused on her. Their eyes sparkled in delight as if she’d just hung the moon and stars for them. She took both of their hands and lead them to a nearby food stall.

“You can order whatever you’d like.”

“Really? This isn’t a joke right?” The boy looked skeptical.

“Cross my heart that this isn’t a joke. Really you two can order whatever you want. Money isn’t an issue.” Kim Dokja assured the children. They whispered to each other before nodding and ordering most of what the stall offered. Taking the food, the four of them sat at a nearby table.

The two kids stared at the food wondering if it was truly okay to have some.

“Eat.” Yoo Joonghyuk ordered. The two children flinched at his words, even if he wasn’t trying to be Yoo Joonghyuk was an intimidating man.

“Go on. It’s okay.” Kim Dokja’s kind tone seemed to break the spell they were under and they dug into the food. They must’ve been starving from how they were stuffing their faces as if it were their last meal.

“Slow down! It’s okay take your time.” The kids paused and did start to eat slower much to Kim Dokja’s satisfaction. She smiled at the two who eyed the two adults in front of them with curiosity.

The kids finished eating, both having content expressions as they had full stomachs.

“Now, tell us your names.”

“I’m Lee Gilyoung.” The boy stated.

“Shin Yoosung.” The girl nodded along shyly.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you two. How long have you two been out on the streets?”

“A while…” Lee Gilyoung muttered.

“How did you two end up in this situation?”

“Our parents sold us…”

“That’s terrible. Why did they sell you two?”

“Because we’re different…” Shin Yoosung muttered.

“How so?” Kim Dokja asked genuinely curious as to why someone would sell their children.

“We’re both tamers. Gilyoung can control insects and I can control beasts/animals.” Shin Yoosung explained.

“Yoosuunnggg. We don’t have to tell them that.” Lee Gilyoung chastised her.

“But they seem like nice people.”

“Whatever, now they’re gonna look at us differently. Everyone else does.”

“I still see you two as Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung. I think the fact that you’re tamers makes you all the more special.”

“You’re lying.” Lee Gilyoung accused.
“I swear I’m not. I think it’s cool that you two have such abilities.” Kim Dokja was truly honest. Whoever thought of selling them were fools.

“You mean it?” Shin Yoosung asked with hope in her eyes, and Lee Gilyoung also looked hopeful.

“I do. Why don’t you two come live with us?” Yoo Joonghyuk was about to protest when Lee Gilyoung cut him off.

“I don’t know…how do we know you aren’t bad people?” Lee Gilyoung eyed them both curiously.

“We bought you food and my husband saved us remember.” Kim Dokja pointed out. At the mention of being her husband again, Yoo Joonghyuk couldn’t hide his satisfied expression, lips quirking up slightly. Almost forgetting that his wife offered to take the children in.

“Then that means we can live with you unnie?”

“If my husband doesn’t have any problems.” She looked up at Yoo Joonghyuk with pleading eyes. How could he say no when she referred to him as her husband? His goal was also to make her happy so if taking these children in would do just that then he would with no problem accept them for her sake.

“Do what you want.”

She grinned and before she could stop herself she hugged Yoo Joonghyuk and placed a kiss to his cheek. He blinked a few times to process what just happened and Kim Dokja’s smile morphed into a mortified expression. Her cheeks turned red and she pointedly looked away from him.

The children looked unamused. They both seemed to glare at Yoo Joonghyuk for making Kim Dokja look so embarrassed.

“So…where do you two live? Are you sure you have room for us?” Lee Gilyoung asked still not believing that he and Shin Yoosung were gonna be taken in by this random couple that crossed their path.

Kim Dokja quickly composed herself and winked at the kids. “You could say we have more than enough room for you two.”
That just made the kids more suspicious, they led it to slide for now though since she was technically their savior.

“Do you two want to do anything else before we leave?” They shook their heads. “How about we get you some new clothes. You’ll be living with us so you need new clothes. We can go to a tailor shop real quick and then go home. How does that sound?” The kids nodded and followed Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk to a nearby store. It was clean and extravagant, filled with expensive clothes.

“Are you sure this isn’t too much?” Shin Yoosung asked eyeing all the clothes.

“I’m sure.”

The store clerk took the children’s measurements without complaint or judgment. Making the children as comfortable as possible. Which made Kim Dokja pay more than what was necessary for the kind service. She also made a note to come back to the store in the future. More clothes would be sent to the palace once all the adjustments were finished, in the meantime the children dressed in some clean clothes that fit them as well as they could without being tailored. Along with shoes that fit them almost perfectly.

“Better?” She asked as the kids nodded enthusiastically. “Good. Well since we’re done here. I just need to make another stop and we can head home.” She took their hands leaving Yoo Joonghyuk to follow them. He was a little upset that his day out with his wife was cut short in favor of taking care of these two children. But Kim Dokja seemed happy and really that was all that mattered. He also got a hug and kiss on the cheek, which was a welcomed bonus.

“Han Sooyoung. Are my books still here?”

“Yes, they are. Safe and sound.” She pulled out the box and handed it to Kim Dokja who happily took it. Yoo Joonghyuk snatched the box from her hands and insisted on carrying it himself.

“I see you have a few new friends with you.” She eyed the two children who were clutching at Kim Dokja’s dress. They looked shyly at the ground.

“Yup! Meet Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung! Aren’t they adorable?” She gushed and praised the two children who turned red at the compliment. Lee Gilyoung kicked the ground and Shin Yoosung twiddled her thumbs.

“Nice to meet you. I guess you got more out of this trip than a few books.”

“I’ll be sure to read them all.” Kim Dokja smiled. Han Sooyoung returned the smile with fondness in her eyes.

“I don’t doubt that. I’ll have more for you to read in the future.” She promised much to Kim Dokja’s delight. The four of them bid their farewell to the vendor. She gave Yoo Joonghyuk a “you’re dead” gesture when everyone’s back was turned as a warning to keep her happy. He shot an icy glare back at Han Sooyoung. As if he wasn’t already trying.

They took a carriage back to the palace and the kids looked on in awe at the huge building that came into view.

“You live here?” Lee Gilyoung wondered allowed.

“Yes, we do.” Kim Dokja answered.

“But don’t the Empress and Emperor live here?”

“Of course they do. They’re us.” She dropped the bomb on them and the children didn’t know if they should bow or just sit there. “You two don’t have to be formal with us. You two are just children. Besides we’re taking you in aren’t we?”

“We…huh? Is this for real?” Lee Gilyoung asked dazedly.

“Yes, it’s all real.”

The two children were quiet for the rest of the trip and were sent to get washed up when they arrived at the palace.

Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung were surprised, to say the least when they were met with two extra individuals. But they were both quick to warm up to the kids.

Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung couldn’t believe their luck. Being taken in by the emperor and empress was something out of a fairy tale. They wondered if it was a dream and they each pinched each other. They were in fact not dreaming and this was all real.

They’d taken to Kim Dokja like fish to water. She was kind and treated them with the utmost care. Yoo Joonghyuk was a different story. His intimidating nature and his ever resting bitch face deterred the children who clung to Kim Dokja.

A part of Yoo Yoonghyuk thought he lost a piece of his wife to the two children. But seeing her smile fondly at them made it worth it.

The children begrudgingly warmed up to Yoo Joonghyuk as well. They seemed to notice how much he cared about Kim Dokja and how much she cared about him. All three of them had silently agreed that they didn’t want Kim Dokja to be sad. So they had a truce, solidarity in making/keeping Kim Dokja happy.

Sadly the children wouldn’t be able to attend the anniversary banquet since it wasn’t announced that they were taken in by the emperor and empress. Which was fine by them.

They’d probably make their debut in society once they were all ready and settled in. Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung liked the idea of being a secret that the emperor and empress were keeping from the prying eyes of the empire.

The palace sure became more lively with the addition of the two children. Even Yoo Joonghyuk found himself smiling when seeing the children spend time with Kim Dokja.

The kiss on the cheek he received at the market still lingered in his mind as it did hers. Where she was mortified he was ecstatic with the progress he’d accumulated these past few weeks. Kim Dokja really was in denial. Yoo Joonghyuk would have to literally express his feelings for her. Making it clear that she was loved by him. Whether it be by bluntly stating that he loved her or by his actions.

She would find out soon enough.

Notes:

I really should get my priorities straight and focus on school work but the Joongdok brain rot is real. So we find out who the hooded figure is. Yoo Joonghyuk really can't say no to Kim Dokja. He really is down bad. They all ship Dokja with happiness. I hope you all enjoy this chapter. Again updates will be sporadic and I have no clue when this story will end but thanks for joining me on this ride.

Chapter Text

Yoo Joonghyuk and Kim Dokja were both busy the day of the banquet. Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung watched as Kim Dokja was frantically trying to get everything ready.

"Noona, you sure you're not getting worried over nothing?"

"Yeah! It's just a big fancy dinner right?"

"Well you aren't wrong but it's only my second year as empress and I have to make an impression right? Sure there are plenty of other banquets to worry about but this one is special you know?" She rambled onto the children who got an idea as to why she was acting so nervous.

"I'm sorry you two can't attend. But you're free to have whatever you like for dinner. You can eat it in your rooms if you'd like."

"That sounds good." The children both agreed. After coming to live in the palace they got to eat delicious food and sleep in a warm comfy bed. It was heaven and it was all thanks to the woman in front of them.

Kim Dokja was glad that they seemed to be adjusting well. They were both so energetic and playful. Just seeing them smile made her want to pat their heads. She's always wanted children but with Yoo Joonghyuk being Yoo Joonghyuk she didn't think there would be a chance.

Seeing those two get abused by those men reminded Dokja of her childhood. Her father being an abusive alcoholic meant living with him had been hell. She had the scars to prove it. Her mother and her were free from his clutches once he died.

Watching that scene unfold before her eyes made her want to protect them. Call it motherly instinct, she just had to take the kids in. What surprised her the most was how Yoo Joonghyuk agreed without complaint. Was it because they didn't have an heir yet? Or for some other reason? Either way she was happy and thought acting like a mother to these kids wasn't so bad.

"How do I look?" As the time for the banquet was nearing she was dressed up beautifully. She wore a dark blue gown that transitioned to black near the bottom and was dotted with white gems of various sizes that made it look like a starry night. Her hair was intricately braided and dotted with pearls. A silver tiara adorned with gems shaped like stars rested delicately on her head.

The diamond necklace, which was a surprise gift from the emperor, adorned her pale neck. It was beautiful and since it was a gift from her husband she cherished it. She looked like a goddess, a star that descended from the heavens for this night only.

The children were in awe.

"You look really pretty, noona!" Lee Gilyoung exclaimed.

"Yeah! Like a star! Shin Yoosung agreed.

"Aww you kids are too much."

"It's true and if that guy doesn't see it he's blind."

Speaking of the devil, there was a knock on the door and Yoo Joonghyuk's voice was heard from the other side.

"Are you ready?"

"Just hold on a second." She called back. She turned to the two children and patted them both on the head. "Go to your rooms. You can play for however long you want but be mindful of the noise, okay? Don't forget to ask a maid for dinner. I don't want you two going to bed on an empty stomach. Don't stay up too late."

They nodded. She smiled at them and answered the door. She was almost blinded by how handsome her husband was. He filled out his suit very well. It was black but in the right light gave off the illusion of being a rich dark blue in certain areas. Silver trimming and other adornments littered his attire. His hair was slicked back, a few stray strands falling into his face.

Just as she was awestruck by his appearance, Yoo Joonghyuk was stunned by how beautiful she looked tonight. When he saw the necklace resting against her neck Yoo Joonghyuk smiled. He was happy to see that she was wearing his gift to her. She blushed at the sight of his smile. Could her husband be any more handsome?

"Let's go." He held his arm out for her to take and she took it with no hesitation. They bid the children a final goodbye. The children both sent Yoo Joonghyuk a glare when Kim Dokja wasn't looking. He glared back and the children flinched but didn't back down.

Yoo Joonghyuk happened to admit that he liked the kids. They seemed to care about Kim Dokja almost as much as he did. Now that Yoo Joonghyuk thought about it he actually wouldn't mind having a kid of his own. Maybe a daughter who would take after Kim Dokja. His heart pounded at the thought of having a mini Kim Dokja running around the palace.

He was so in love that he wanted to have more kids with her. Not to say that he didn't care about Shin Yoosung or Lee Gilyoung. Yoo Joonghyuk enjoyed their presence even if that meant that he had to share time with his wife with them.

They were both good kids and with time and training, their ability as tamers would grow stronger. Those two would be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. But that meant more people who were capable of protecting Kim Dokja.

As they walked towards the banquet Yoo Joonghyuk initiated some small talk.

"Will you be stepping on my feet this time as well?"

"I'll try not to."

"Don't worry I don't mind." He assured her.

"Hmm." She hummed to herself and once they made their appearance they had to go through formalities. Greeting guests and taking their place on the thrones overlooking the whole room. Lee Hyunsung and Jung Heewon were patrolling a good distance away. Their main focus was keeping the two safe from any disasters.

They all watched as people started to mingle and dance with each other once the orchestra started to play popular songs to dance to. Dinner would be served soon but before that Yoo Joonghyuk wanted to dance with Kim Dokja. They descended the stairs from their thrones, Yoo Joonghyuk taking her hand as she was led down. Once they got to the center of the room he placed a hand on her waist and her hand rested on his shoulder. The music was slow and calm as they swayed from side to side.

As opposed to the other events they'd attended or hosted in the past. The dance wasn't stiff but fluid. Yoo Joongyuk's attention was solely on Kim Dokja whose face was slowly reddening, her husband's focus on her.

He pulled her closer. The crowd watched as they danced as if they were in their own little world. Some people who had thought their relationship was in shambles had wavered at seeing them so close together.

"Everyone is staring…" She whispered.

"Let them stare."

Even when the song changed they kept on dancing matching its pace. Kim Dokja was in fact not a bad dancer, it's just that she used to think that Yoo Joonghyuk didn't want anything to do with her so she'd purposely step on his feet to end the dance sooner. Yet he would always dance until the end of a song with her. No matter how many times she'd step on his feet.

But right now as they danced together after having their relationship develop further these past few weeks, it allowed her to rest her head against Yoo Joonghyuk's chest as they swept across the dance floor. The audience was entranced and once the last song ended the banquet was to start.

The formalities that came with the banquet were tiring. On the plus side they danced for more than one song and he got to see her eat the food. She looked like she was having a good time. Their feet touched from underneath the table and she glanced his way. He didn't move his foot and just gave a slight nod to her. After a moment she ended up resting her foot on top of his own.

Dinner went smoothly, there weren't any assasination attempts, and no major incidents although one of the guests appeared to be drunk off of the wine and laughing boisterously, nothing went wrong.

Yoo Joonghyuk saw Kim Dokja hold back a smile before dabbing the corner of his lip with a napkin.

"You had sauce there." She informed him before going back to her meal.

"I didn't think they were that close?"

"But she still hasn't given birth to an heir? Why does the emperor keep her around then?"

"I thought they had a horrible relationship. Do you think the emperor has a lover on the side?"

"Maybe its the empress? She usually turns in early for the night."

The emperor's ears pricked at the sound of people talking illy of his wife. He turned to Kim Dokja and whispered enough so she could be the only one to hear.

"Do you trust me?"

"I do."

"Then know that I'm doing this because I want to not because of someone else's words." She looked at him curiously before he pulled her out of her seat and into his lap.

There was a distinct gasp from the crowd as Yoo Joonghyuk kissed Kim Dokja in front of all their guests. Her eyes widened at the action. She didn't know what to do as her mind was racing. Yoo Joonghyuk took that as a chance to slip his tongue in her mouth. She squeaked at the sudden intrusion but found herself getting lost in the kiss. Her legs trembled. Good thing she was in his lap or else she wouldn't have been able to stand on her own.

With a loud pop they separated and Kim Dokja was red faced and gasping for breath. Her face reddened even further when she remembered they were in front of a massive audience. She buried her face into Yoo Joonghyuk's chest, embarrassed by the intense display of affection.

The kiss silenced anyone who doubted the relationship between the emperor and empress.

"Feel free to stay or leave. We have…important matters to attend to." Yoo Joonghyuk stated as he then swept her off her feet and carried her back to their chambers. In doing so he gave her another kiss. Leaving the audience gobsmacked.

Lee Hyunsung and Jung Heewon couldn't hold back their surprise at the sight. The large man then sighed and handed over a couple of gold coins towards Jung Heewon. They bet on whether or not Yoo Joonghyuk would make a move tonight.

"You owe me a date too."

"Date?"

"As the winner of the bet I want a date. With you Hyunsung." She smiled smugly at the man who was in the middle of comprehending what she just said.

"Me?"

"Yes you. Now let's usher these people out and then we can plan on where to spend the money I won for our date."

He smiled at her and Jung Heewon's heart melted a little.

"Aww. You're so cute." She reached up to pinch his cheek. Lee Hyunsung blushed and together they emptied out the palace.

"Yoo *kiss* Joong *kiss* hyuk." The man in question was the one kissing her, preventing her from getting a complete sentence out.

He was still carrying her to who knows where.

She pressed her palm to his lips in an attempt to stop him. But he ended up kissing her palm tenderly. Holding it in place and then kissing her inner wrist. Yoo Joonghyuk was strong enough to carry his wife with one arm.

She was having a hard time comprehending what was going on as he continued to walk.

"Can't a man kiss his wife?"

"Hold on, where are we going and what was that all about?"

"You don't know how long I've waited."

"Waited for what?"

"Dokja. I really do care about you. Immensely. So much so that the thought of you being bad-mouthed made me want to cut off their heads for treason."

"You would really do that for me?"

"Yes, but I held back for you. I know you don't like people to be killed without reason."

"You care about me? Truly?"

He stopped walking and set her down. He tucked some stray strands of hair behind her ear and cupped her chick. Then he tilted her chin up towards him and looked at her with such a soft expression that she couldn't help but get lost in them.

"I do. Dokja, I love you." He gave her a chaste kiss on the lips that slowly turned heated as she gripped his lapels tightly.

"I thought you didn't?" She whispered once they broke apart.

"Then it was my fault for having you think that way."

They had stopped in front of his room.

"We can stop here if you'd like. Or…" He trailed off.

"Or?" She asked coquettishly. The shyness or hesitation she felt about him seemed to be gone as she started to trail her fingers down his chest.

"Dokja. You don't know how long I've wanted this. You. I still remember our first night together." She blushed at his words. "It went by too fast. Tonight I'm going to make it last."

They entered his room and he locked the door behind him. Yoo Joonghyuk then slid off his coat and undid his vest. He stopped when all he had on were his pants. He turned towards Kim Dokja who couldn't keep her eyes of his well toned body.

Yoo Joonghyuk started to unclip the accessories on her person. The necklace and tiara were set aside on the nightstand. While the pearls were carefully plucked from her hair, all placed safely inside the drawer. Yoo Joonghyuk did all of this and then watched as he finally got her dress off. The shimmering fabric pooled at her feet.

She shivered in the night air, only wearing her bra and a lacy pair of underwear with her stockings held up by garters.

Yoo Jonghyuk just took that time to stare at his wife's long legs. His eyes raking over her body and seeing how good she looked in black underwear. The contrast between her pale skin and the dark fabric was enticing. He would engrain this image of her in his head for years.

"Dokja. Lay down." The bed was soft and she situated herself in the middle of it. Hair splayed out behind her.

That night as they were trapped in each other's embrace. The sounds of their love making drowned out any thoughts of denial either of them had about their feelings for one another.

They took it nice and slow. Nothing separated them as they explored each other's bodies. Yoo Joonghyuk practically worshiped Kim Dokja's body. Kissing here, biting there, caressing her all over. He loved the feeling of her around him.

She loved the attention. Yoo Joonghyuk made her feel things she hasn't felt in a long time. Her heart swelled with the amount of care and love he poured into his actions. She was stupid to ever think this was all ever a ploy to get a better reputation with the public.

Not when he was touching her there or kissing her breathless. Not when he was looking at her with so much love and devotion.

She suddenly started to cry and that immediately stopped Yoo Joonghyuk from what he was doing.

"Are you okay? Did I hurt you?" He was concerned.

"No I just. Tell me this isn't a dream? Tell me that once tomorrow comes that this isn't going to be over?" Tears slipped down her cheeks and Yoo Joonghyuk wiped them away. He placed a kiss on her forehead.

"This isn't going to end. I promise you. I love you Dokja."

"I love you, too." She whispered and pulled him down for a kiss. His heart pounded at her declaration and he continued what he was doing. Making sure that she knew how much she was loved.

The next morning as sunlight seeped through their window, Yoo Joonghyuk admired his sleeping wife. The blanket had slid down to her waist revealing her back. There were small scars littered across her pale skin. Evidence of her unfortunate childhood. He'd heard the stories and the rumors that circulated before they married. But none of that mattered, to Yoo Joonghyuk, Kim Dokja was beautiful. He traced the scars on her back lightly as she slept soundly.

He grinned, feeling content. She was alive and well. He'd prevent any harm from coming her way. Yoo Joonghyuk's personal goal in life now was to protect and keep showering Kim Dokja with love.

After a while she stirred in her sleep as the room became engulfed in sunlight. She soon woke up, squinting as her eyes adjusted.

"Morning." He smiled at her.

She yawned and greeted him tiredly.

"What kind of stamina do you have?" She groaned as she tried to get out of bed, but a shot of pain traveled up her spine. "Ow."

"Do you need some ice?" He asked, concerned.

"This is your fault." She grumbled.

"You weren't complaining last night." He stated smugly.

"Shut up."

"Hmm." He hummed as he watched her struggle. "How about a hot bath?" She perked up at that.

"Only because you offered." He smiled as he put on a robe to go start the bath.

"Wait here my love." He kissed her forehead and headed to the bathroom. She blushed at being called his love. Heart hammering in her chest. Kim Dokja still couldn't believe her feelings were reciprocated.

She could feel her whole body turn red as she remembered what they did last night. Before she knew it, Yoo Joonghyuk scooped her naked self up and walked to the bathroom. The tub was filled with hot water, he must've added a herbal mix because she could smell the soothing scent of green tea and eucalyptus permeating the room. He set her slowly down into the bath and joined her once she was settled.

Yoo Joonghyuk got what he wished for. Ever since they got caught in the rain he wanted to have a bath together with his wife. The hot water and added herbs and salts relaxed both of their muscles. Kim Dokja leaned against Yoo Joonghyuk's chest and they soaked in there for what felt like hours. Alas they couldn't stay in there forever as they would've ended up pruney.

They took turns scrubbing each other's back and washing their hair.

Their goal wasn't to try anything in the bath. They had plenty of time for that in the future. But right now they enjoyed being washed and cared for by the person they loved the most.

They got dressed, Yoo Joonghyuk found some clothes for Kim Dokja to wear in his closet. Let's just say that he was prepared in case they decided to share the room together.

Once they were ready and presentable they headed down to eat breakfast. The two children were already eating.

"What took you so long?" Lee Gilyoung asked, mouth full of eggs.

"Slept in." Kim Dokja responded.

"What happened to your neck?" Shin Yoosung pointed curiously at the red teeth marks.

She immediately clamped a hand down on it. It was a little sore and she glared at Yoo Joonghyuk who returned it with a smug smile. He pulled a chair out for her to sit. She begrudgingly took it.

"Nothing to worry about."

"Did that guy bite you?" Lee Gilyoung's eyes narrowed at Yoo Joonghyuk.

"Hahaha." Kim Dokja laughed awkwardly, he really hit the nail on the head. She didn't want to explain things to a bunch of 10 years olds. That reminded her, she needed to tell the kids something.

"Anyways, you two are going to be taking classes with a tutor." She changed the subject.

"Aww. Do we have to?" They whined.

"Of course, I want my kids to have the best education."

At being called her kids Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung preened.

"You two will also have to train your tamer abilities as well. Head to the training grounds later with Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung. They can teach you basic fighting skills." Yoo Joonghyuk added.

"They can train along with the new recruits." Jung Heewon added speaking up from behind the kids who flinched. They didn't know she was there.

"Don't worry, you guys will be in mine and Hyunsung's capable hands." She grinned.

"How about you two finish up eating. The emperor and I need to eat too."

"Okay. Just make sure he doesn't eat you." Lee Gilyoung shot back.

Kim Dokja blushed, this kid was one cheeky little thing. But she still cared a great amount for him, for the both of them. So once they were done she ruffled their hair and pat them on the back as they followed Jung Heewon outside.

"Those kids are perceptive." Yoo Joonghyuk commented.

"They really are. I don't know if I should be happy they are, or embarrassed." She buried her red face into her hands. "Also it's your fault for biting the hell out of me."

"Are you hurting anywhere? I know last night I lost myself."

"Just sore. I forgot just how much stamina you had. Really, Joonghyuk, I'm not going anywhere, so you don't have to act like I'll disappear one day."

But she did. Her life slipped away as she was held in his arms in the past. He could've saved her if he were just by her side.

"Hey, what's got you all worked up?" She cupped his cheek and stroked it with her thumb. He held onto her hand and kissed it.

"Nothing. Nothing my love. I couldn't be happier."

"I'm glad. I'm happy too." He leaned down to place a kiss on her lips. But was stopped when she put her palm up to her face.

"We're in public."

"That didn't stop me last night." He smirked and pushed her hand away to place a sweet kiss on her lips. She melted into it and she almost whined when he pulled away.

"Someone is eager? Was last night not enough for you?" He teased. "Don't worry we'll have plenty of chances to make up for lost time." He kissed her again. Once they pulled away he smiled at her and they both heard the palace staff gasp in shock, not because of the kisses. But because the emperor was smiling. A very rare sight to see, as his usual default expression just seemed to be a frown or scowl.

"You're too handsome. Do I even deserve you?"

"Of course. It is I who doesn't deserve you." He refuted.

"My dear Emperor. Stop saying such nonsense I feel like I'm gonna pop a blood vessel."

"Oh really? Can't handle all my love and affection? Well newsflash I've been in love with you since we first met."

"Liar." She pouted.

"It's the truth." He kissed her again and again.

"Stop you're smothering me." She weakly tried to push him away.

"Nah I don't think I will." He peppered her face with kisses.

"Joonghyuk, please stop. I don't know how much my heart can take."

"My wife is cute." He must've said it out loud as Kim Dokja's face seemed to be on fire.

Deciding that it was enough teasing he let her go. It took her a minute to compose herself and she ate breakfast without a word to him. She was a little mad at being teased so much. But she couldn't help but feel fond of his actions. Sure it was a surprise but she enjoyed every bit of it. Her husband looked so handsome when he was able to express his emotions.

"I'm going to contact a tutor for the kids. I'll see you later." She stood up and placed a kiss on his cheek. Leaving before things escalated.

He was happy as long as she was. He had to wonder who she planned to contact as a tutor.

That reminded him that he needed to send a letter to Yoo Mia. He needed to tell her about the kids. He wondered if Yoo Mia would enjoy having them around. They were close in age and he thought it would be nice for his sister to have friends even in the palace. Once the academy was on break he hoped the three of them would get along.

Maybe he could convince his sister to stay and be tutored here in the palace instead of at the academy. But he knew it was his sister's choice to go and it would be her choice to stay or leave.

Chapter 6: Yoo Mia Returns

Chapter Text

When Yoo Mia received the letter from her brother she thought he was being absurd. The idea that there would be two other children in the palace living with them wasn’t something she’d expect from her brother.

What really surprised her the most was when she arrived back home to see Kim Dokja and her brother so close. Closer than they’ve ever been from all the times she’s seen them together.

Her brother was also smiling more, most of those smiles directed toward Kim Dokja. It was uncanny and a little gross in her opinion, seeing her brother so lovey-dovey was something she wasn’t used to.

“Oppa.”

“Mia.”

“Mia. So glad to see you!” Kim Dokja smiled and gave her a big hug.

"Same to you." She hugged the older woman back and with her eyes conveyed to her brother that they needed to talk. Alone, sibling to sibling about what was going on.

With one last squeeze, Kim Dokja let Yoo Mia go. The young girl was then greeted by Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung who introduced themselves to her rather enthusiastically.

"It's very nice to meet you, your Royal Highness. We can go out and show you what we can do. Both Gilyoung and I have tamer powers. I can call upon and control beasts while bug-head can call upon…well, bugs."

"Hey, my power is just as cool as yours. Bugs are definitely great. They're practically everywhere." The boy argued with a huff.

"Yeah if you like bugs." Shin Yoosung grumbled.

“Please, just Mia is fine.”

"Kids, how about you let Mia choose what to do, she just got back from her long journey from the academy. You can show her later." Kim Dokja interjected.

“Okay. Mia, what do you want to do?” Lee Gilyoung asked curiously.

“What do I want?” She paused for a second and then told her newfound friends exactly what she wanted to do.

“Let’s go raid the kitchen.” The two other kids smiled gleefully and shook in excitement.

“Mia.” Yoo Joonghyuk looked pointedly at her.

“Don’t be such a killjoy. Run along and eat as much as you want.” Kim Dokja urged them. Yoo Mia noticed that she had a firm grip on her brother’s arm. “Have whatever you want and you three can stay up as late as you want. Training will be pushed back the day after tomorrow.”

Yoo Joonghyuk was about to say something before Kim Dokja stepped on his foot.

"Oops, my bad. You were about to say?" She smiled innocently. He stayed silent although he did manage to grumble some words.

The kids didn’t need to be told twice and were on their way to the kitchen. Not before Yoo Mia sent her brother a look saying she was going to find him later and then they would talk.

“Oh, to be young.” Kim Dokja said wistfully.

“We aren’t that old.” Yoo Joonghyuk pointed out.

“Still, I’m glad Mia has kids her age to play with. I know the academy can be filled with some stuck-up little brats.” Kim Dokja huffed. She knew first hand before her engagement to Yoo Joonghyuk was announced they were treating her like garbage and once it was announced that she would be with Yoo Joonghyuk then they turned their attention to sucking up to her.

“So, since the children are gone right now…” Kim Dokja looked at Yoo Joonghyuk suggestively.

“Yes.” He said without hesitation.

“Great! Let’s go and talk about the book that we’ve just finished reading.” Yoo Joonghyuk deflated a bit at her words.

“I’m messing with you.” She intertwined her fingers with Yoo Joonghyuk’s and pulled him along. “We’ve got a good couple of hours before the kids look for us.”

He smiled and scooped her up into his arms.

“Joonghyuk.”

He smirked and kissed her. He was lightning fast on his feet and they made it to their bedroom in record time.

It’s a good thing the room was soundproof.

As the three children were eating their fill of food ranging from tarts to roast beef sandwiches and goblets filled with juice.

“So how did you two get here?” Yoo Mia asked the two who swallowed their food and looked at each other before answering her.

“Well, we were basically on the streets.” Shin Yoosung started.

“Ran away from the people who bought us 'cause our parents sold us since we were tamers. Apparently, we sell well on the black market.” Lee Gilyoung shrugged nonchalantly as if talking about being sold on the black market was nothing.

“Yeah, so we’ve been wandering around for a while and we ran into Kim Dokja and your brother.”

“Yup, she saw us and I guess she took a liking to us. We like her too, she’s nice and cares about us. Treats us way better than our parents ever did.” Lee Gilyoung finished with a smile.

“Yeah, she’s really nice. I always wondered how she could put up with my brother.” Yoo Mia admitted.

“Yup, she goes through a lot putting up with him.” Lee Gilyoung nodded. “Sometimes I wish I could just give him a good punch.” Behind him, a cook dropped a spoon and the boy flinched. “He’s not behind me is he?”

The two girls shook their heads.

“Yeah, a good punch to his stupid face.” He stated regaining his composure. Yoo Mia laughed at the thought of someone punching her brother in the face. She felt sorry for the poor sucker who would because they’d probably be obliterated.

She thought of only one person who could get away with doing just that. Hell her brother would probably be into it. She internally shuttered at the thought wishing she could just erase her memory of the mental image that was bombarding her mind.

To get the thought out of her mind Yoo Mia decided to think about how she really enjoyed spending time with Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung. It felt a little less lonely now that she had friends in this huge palace.

She still had to talk with her brother. Yoo Mia thought it was weird that he finally got his head out of his ass and opened his heart up to Kim Dokja after ignoring her for the past 2 years.

The three continued to play and eat whatever they wanted. She was much happier with them there with her. Yoo Mia had Kim Dokja to thank for that.

In the morning she finally had time to speak with her brother alone. They were in his study and she watched her brother staring at her.

“Oppa.”

“Mia.”

“What’s with the sudden change?” She went straight to the point. “You weren’t this affectionate before.”

“Just decided to change things up.”

“Hmm.”

“I love her dearly."

"Yeah, you were just stupid for wasting two years. Honestly, Oppa. When it comes to showing affection to others you could honestly do better. Sometimes it's like having a conversation with a rock."

He felt a jab from his sister's words and more as she continued to speak.

"Not to be rude, but sometimes you look constipated when you try to suppress your emotions. Honestly, if it were me I would've asked for a divorce. You should be lucky that Unnie is able to put up with you. Seriously I would've hightailed it out of there."

"Thank you, for your words."

"Hey, I'm just telling you like it is. You made Unnie suffer for those two years. But I'm finally glad you have some sense."

"Mia."

"What? You know I'm right."

"Fine, you are right." He begrudgingly agreed.

"You are making up for those years right?"

"Of course."

"Good. Well, I'm going to play with Gilyoung and Yoosung. Mess things up and I swear that Yoosung and Gilyoung won’t be the only ones you have to worry about." With that said she left her brother alone in his office and he sighed. He really was stupid in his first life. So much time wasted.

Once she was gone, Yoo Joonghyuk went back to work on figuring out a way to take down the Salvation Church.

As of now, he was on a time-sensitive mission to prevent his wife's death. Four years. He only had four years to prevent it.

He was still having trouble finding reliable evidence to turn them in. He knew that not all of them were corrupt. Just High Priest Nirvana and their loyal followers. In their eyes, the church could do no wrong.

He sighed deeply and furrowed his brows. His main goal was to protect his wife and try not to spiral like he did when he lost her.

Yoo Joonghyuk looked out the window of his office overlooking the garden and watched as Kim Dokja entertained the children.

She seemed to be a natural with them. All those years were wasted and they could've had a child of their own. It wasn't too late now and Yoo Joonghyuk would create a better future where Kim Dokja is safe and they can all live happily together.

Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung were a part of that future. The longer they stayed in the palace, Yoo Joonghyuk became more attached to them. Not only were they tamers with a large amount of potential, but they also made Kim Dokja smile.

A happy Kim Dokja made a happier Yoo Joonghyuk.

The two children also got along well with his sister, which was always a win. Genuine friends who didn't care about Yoo Mia's status as a princess. To Yoo Joonghyuk they were already family.

If anything ever happened to the people he cared about he'd probably go on a murderous rampage. If his former life was anything to go by it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say he'd go off his rocker now. Hell, he could even be worse now that he had more people to care about.

Yoo Joonghyuk continued to watch Kim Dokja from his office. When she glanced up their eyes met and she gave him a soft smile and wave.

He waved back and she went back to tending to the kids who also waved at Yoo Joonghyuk. The man couldn't help but smile at the happy picture they made.

Kim Dokja was reading a story to the children as they sat down on the grass. Enjoying the time they had before the weather would bring in snow.

He wanted to join them but duty called and he had an empire to run. Along with stacks and stacks of paperwork.

Yoo Joonghyuk was so immersed in his work and research that he didn't know that night had already fallen.

He was made aware when Kim Dokja arrived with a cart of food and tea.

"Joonghyuk." She looked at him in slight concern. "Take a break. You haven't eaten all day."

"I'm busy."

"I can see that." She saw a pile of unfinished paperwork making a home on his desk. She pushed the cart towards the couch and table across from his desk and sat a few dishes down.

Kim Dokja then went and coaxed Yoo Joonghyuk to take a break and eat something. Maybe even get him to bed earlier. He looked exhausted. His eyes dry after reading and signing documents, yet he was determined to finish. Along with further looking into how he could prevent his wife’s impending death.

"Don't worry about the kids. They've already eaten and I tucked them into bed. Now eat."

"I can always eat tomorrow."

"How about I feed you?" She offered.

That got Yoo Joonghyuk's attention. "Okay."

She smiled at him and pulled him over to the couch where they sat together.

It was just them alone in the office. Yoo Joonghyuk couldn’t help but enjoy the intimate gesture of being fed by Kim Dokja. The soft smile she’d wear on her face as he ate whatever she gave him was a satisfying sight to see.

Sometimes she would brush her thumb against the corner of his mouth when he’d have some food left there, she would then bring it up to her mouth to lick it clean.

He couldn’t help but follow all her movements with a keen eye.

“All done.” She smiled happily as Yoo Joonghyuk finished all the food that she gave him.

Yoo Joonghyuk was so mesmerized by her that if she were to feed him poison, he knew he would eat it without hesitation.

“Dessert.” He stated bluntly.

“I didn’t bring any-” She was stopped when Yoo Joonghyuk cupped her face and pulled her down for a chaste kiss.

“No need. I have my dessert right here.” Kim Dokja’s cheeks heated up underneath his palms. “You.” He leaned his forehead against hers, their noses brushing against each other.

They could both feel the hot breaths of the other.

“I love you.” He whispered.

“I love you too.” She leaned in and closed the little distance there was between them. Their lips met and Kim Dokja kissed Yoo Joonghyuk tenderly. He quickly reciprocated and before they knew it they were both fervently kissing each other.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door and they both broke apart a little dazed and breathing heavily.

“What is it?” He snapped as Kim Dokja was fixing her hair and smoothing out her dress.

"Apologies, but the Empress's guest has arrived." A servant replied from behind the door.

"Right! I almost forgot I sent for my friend to come and teach the children the basics of the history of the empire as well as a good amount of other subjects. I can't believe they arrived already."

Yoo Joonghyuk scowled, of all the times to be interrupted.

"Aww, don't pout. Since you're done eating and I assume you're done working, I'll meet you in our bedroom when I'm done." She gave him a kiss on the forehead. "Don't worry I'll send someone to clean up." With that said, she left Yoo Joonghyuk alone.

He let out a frustrated huff more upset that his time with his wife was put on hold.

Yoo Joonghyuk stacked the empty plates onto the cart that Kim Dokja brought over and left it there for the maid to come and take it back to the kitchen.

After putting away important documents and tidying his desk a bit so that he could start again tomorrow, Yoo Joonghyuk went to his bedroom.

Elsewhere, Kim Dokja greeted her friend warmly and after bidding them a good night she headed towards the bedroom.

Tomorrow would be a new day and with it, Kim Dokja would introduce Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung to their new teacher.

Yoo Joonghyuk was already in bed. He waited for Kim Dokja to arrive like a puppy waiting for its master to return.

"I'll join you in a few minutes. Have to change."

Again he waited for her and once she was ready she went under the covers and clung to Yoo Joonghyuk.

She yawned. "Good night."

"Good night." He kissed the top of her head and clung to each other before drifting off to sleep content and happy.

Notes:

I'm still alive. Sorry for not updating the story in a while. Reworked this chapter a lot and I plan on finishing this fic even though updates may take some time. Life is kind of hectic right now. I hope you enjoy this chapter. Any guesses as to who the tutor could be?

P.S. My mind has been going into the gutter while writing this fic. Like down the, I want Kim Dokja to be absolutely wrecked by Yoo Joonghyuk, gutter. Contemplating if I should post the spicy bits I had written down for certain chapters before scrapping the idea altogether. (Not very confident in my smut writing lol)
