Chapter Text

“Goddammit, Dazai! Get back here,” he yelled, chasing after the bandaged bastard, who was running faster than the ginger ever thought he could, trying to evade him. See, Dazai had swapped out all his wine he kept in his cellar for vinegar while he was asleep, and now Chuuya was out for blood, and had been chasing after the damn mummy throughout the entire building.

Eventually, Chuuya was able to corner him. He had Dazai in a chokehold, about ready to punch.

“Eheh–please, Chibi, we can talk about this!”

“Should’ve thought about that before you decided to mess with my stuff!”

Dazai just continued to laugh, “please. Don’t act as if you don’t have at least a hundred more bottles of wine in that bunker of yours.” Chuuya let out a growl at that, pretending as if that wouldn't fuel all the dog jokes Dazai had in store.

Chuuya was about to finally go in for a punch until they heard a strange noise. When they both looked towards where the noise came from down the hall, Chuuya’s grip on Dazai loosened, allowing Dazai to get free. Dazai ran to the source of the noise, so of course, Chuuya followed.

When they arrived, they saw a lot of grunts, along with the orphan Dazai took under his wing not too long ago, acting up and attacking each other, with a scared kid, who Chuuya recognized as Yumeno Kyuusaku gripping onto a weird looking doll tightly, in the middle. He noticed something off about the men, their eyes were red and bleeding.

Dazai went up to the orphan, Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, and lightly tapped him on the shoulder, causing him to calm down, and his eyes return to normal. So it was an ability. Dazai then turned to look at the child, and knelt down. The kid noticed him, and ran into his arms and..Dazai hugged them?

All the men stopped attacking each other, so Chuuya deduced it must’ve been Kyuusaku’s ability. From his perspective, it looked like Kyuusaku whispered something in Dazai’s ear–and when Chuuya says he’s never seen anything so bloodcurdling, he means it–The look of shock and fury that passed over Dazai’s face was terrifying. Enough to make the grunts freeze in fear. And even Chuuya had to admit that he was a little intimidated. Akutagawa looked at Dazai, opening his mouth as if he was about to say something, but Dazai cut him off with a flick of a hand, giving him a look. Akutagawa nodded, stepping back as Dazai stood up, still holding Kyuusaku in his arms.

“So, which one of you thought it would be a good idea,” Dazai asked with a smile on his face that did not quite reach his eyes, and a cold tone that did not insinuate amusement. A second of silence passed, so he spoke up again.

“Ahem. Perhaps I wasn't clear, so let me rephrase that,” his smile dropped, and he was all but glaring now, “which one of you thought it would be a good idea to assault this child?”

Chuuya’s eyes went wide. Assault this child? What the fuck? Although he had to wonder why exactly Dazai cared so much. He means, this was the mafia, the people here have probably done worse, even though Chuuya never understood people who could so easily harm a child. Only thing keeping him from getting in those grunt’s faces is the fact Dazai seems to have got it all handled.

Finally, one of the grunts, what an idiot, spoke up. “What does it matter to you?” He asked, in a gruff voice. Some of the other grunts immediately flinched.

The chuckle Dazai let out was anything but amused as Kyuusaku buried their head even deeper into his neck, “I don’t know if you know, but..” Dazai paused, obviously for dramatic effect, so Chuuya had to roll his eyes at that. “This child is one of the Boss’ wards, along with me.”

“He’s the..Demon Prodigy,” one of the grunts muttered, trembling.

Dazai grinned, pointing right at the big, burly man, announcing “That I am!” In faux-cheer. “And this,” he motioned to the child in his arms, “is my little sibling,” he sneered. At that, even Chuuya was shocked. The only one who didn’t have any reaction was Akutagawa, who was just watching the scene intently.

“See, this may be the Mafia,” he continued, “but we have limits. Boundaries. And this is a line you crossed. This may be an underground crime syndicate where anything goes, but the molesting of a child isn’t something we take kindly to, especially if the child is close to the boss or your superior.”

“Dazai-san, I-” Akutagawa finally tried to speak, but was cut off again when Dazai spoke, once again.

“Well,” he announced in an airy tone, “as someone with a little sister theirself,” he walked to Akutagawa, “I’ll let you decide the proper punishment,” he smiled at his mentee and paused right by him, Chuuya ran up to them, and got close enough to hear what Dazai was about whisper to him.

   “Thank you, Akutagawa.”

And the ravenette absolutely beamed at that, and Chuuya feels like he’s seen a new side of his partner that he never would have even guessed was there. They left the area, Chuuya following Dazai, leaving Akutagawa to deal with the grunts.

Chuuya followed Dazai all the way to the exit of the Headquarters before asking where he was going.

Dazai smiled, gripping Kyuusaku’s hand tight, whom he finally put down and allowed to walk themself, before replying, “to buy stuff to bake brown sugar cookies, of course!”
