plus one

Summary:

you’re caitlyn’s date to yet another wedding, but after seeing another man try to flirt with her you’re confessing before you’re ready to.

Work Text:

“Sheriff, you’re looking rather lovely this evening,” the conversation you’re having with Caitlyn is cut off by a tall man that you definitely don’t recognise and judging by his outfit, seems to be pretty wealthy as well. “Would you care to join me for a dance?” The man asks and you can feel a scowl starting to appear, but you try to remain neutral since there wasn’t any need to make a scene.

This was the fourth man during the night that has walked up to Caitlyn and attempted to flirt with her, all the while ignoring that you were her plus one. It’s not like the two of you were together (yet), but you’re pretty sure that someone with a date would scream unavailable.

Just the thought of more men interrupting your time with Caitlyn sets you on edge and this time the scowl makes it’s appearance. “She’s taken!” you’re blurting out before you can even think of the consequences, and just when the man is about to respond you’re grabbing Caitlyn’s wrist and whisking her away. You’re unsure of where to go until your eyes set upon the balcony exit, and with ease you start to navigate through the ballroom.

Once outside, you’re hit with the cool breeze, which helps in bringing you back to your senses. It’s like all your thoughts magically sort themselves out and afterwards you’re left feeling embarrassed now that you’ve realised what you had told the man. “Y/N?” Caitlyn’s voice catches your attention, but you continue to look away. You’re not ready to face the girl, especially if she decides to say something that you don’t want to hear.

You’re scared to consider that maybe you read things wrong, that maybe this was just Caitlyn’s way of being friendly. It’s not weird for a friend to consistently ask you to be her date for weddings right? She’s asked other people when you couldn’t, what makes you any different. “About what you said,” Caitlyn breaks the silence, and you can feel her gaze on you, yet you continue to ignore her by keeping your attention on the view in front of you.

Caitlyn doesn’t say anything after that. You might be a little worried about what her response is going to be, but if she walks away without you communicating back you’ll probably just feel worse. A sigh escapes your lips, and you try to steel yourself for what happens next. “I- I’m sorry, I just didn’t like it…” you apologise and finally turn so that you’re facing Caitlyn. The expression she on her face is neutral and you can’t help but hold your breath.

“Didn’t like what?” she replies and you’re not sure whether to feel sad or baffled at the fact that she couldn’t tell. Instead all you feel is frustration, “You’re really going to make me say it?” you retort, but Caitlyn is only left confused at your question. For someone so smart, she sure could be dense sometimes. You think over your next words carefully, it was probably better to be honest since you had a pretty good idea of what feeling took over you earlier.

Whatever happens, happens, right? Plus admitting what you felt earlier would help remove that weight off your chest. “I think I was jealous…” your voice is quiet, “I’ve seen you with others, but it just didn’t sit well with me tonight.”

The response you get is silence, which didn’t make you feel any better than you did five seconds ago. Caitlyn was probably thinking of the best response, but you’re not sure if you can handle waiting so you open your mouth to say something else. “Can I admit something as well?” Caitlyn asks and cutting you off before a word can escape your lips. Now you feel confused, so instead of replying you remain quiet.

“I was jealous too,” Caitlyn avoids your gaze and the pink hue adorning her cheeks is enough to tell you that she’s being serious. “You may not have noticed, but there were quite a few people who had their eyes on you tonight.” Caitlyn adds, now you’re just confused again. What does that even mean? Most of the guests at the wedding were either friends or acquaintances, “Huh? Me?!” you exclaim, your only conclusion is that Caitlyn was definitely reading into things since no one made any advances on you.

“You’re beautiful Y/N,” Caitlyn adds. She’s complimented you before, but hearing her say those words had a different effect now. You can feel your face warming up so you look away, the blush on your cheeks only darkening. Her words caught you by surprise and you’re not sure if you can say anything in response to that so you continue to avoid her gaze. “About what you said earlier… I take it that you feel the same way,” Caitlyn continues, yet her tone makes it sound like it was more of a question.

This was definitely happening and probably wasn’t an ideal confession especially with all the scenarios that you had imagined. What matters though is that your feelings finally reached Caitlyn. “I do…” you answer and this time you turn to face Caitlyn. There’s a smile on her lips, gentle and loving, so you return it with one of your own.

Your eyes wander to Caitlyn’s lips briefly, thoughts of what it would be like to kiss her taking over. It’s not like you’re trying to hide it now, more like you’re hoping that Caitlyn notices and makes a move. When you feel the girl place her hands on your waist and start to lean in slowly, you have to stop the smirk from appearing.

“Oh there you two are!” Jayce’s loud voice startles you, and it was just your luck that he interrupted your first kiss with Caitlyn. It doesn’t take you long for your mood to change from annoyance to embarrassment, and you’re pushing Caitlyn away gently whilst trying to calm yourself down. Hopefully it was dark enough outside that Jayce hadn’t seen you both, but the smirk he sends you is enough to tell you that he did.

“How about we continue later?” Caitlyn offers, a sheepish smile on her lips. Your imagination starts running wild at her words, and you wonder if she knows just how broad that question is. Does she mean a kiss or something more? Rather than thinking about it too much, you reach out for her hand and start leading her back inside. “I’ll hold you to that,” you answer and once you’ve returned to the party, you’re feeling a little bit more confident at being by Caitlyn’s side.
