Cyan

Summary:

Blue and green make cyan. Ravenclaws and Slytherins make unlikely friends. Touya and Izuku make no sense at all, yet all the sense in the world.

Notes:

This was written for Dabideku week in January. Yes, I am that slow but at least it's done now. Hope you enjoy.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Touya hated the sorting ceremony with a burning passion. Although he only ever sat through one in total and it was his own, he stood by that hatred. What could possibly be worse than being judged in front of the entire school as your first introduction to said school? Literally nothing, in Touya’s humble opinion. After he was labelled Ravenclaw in front of thousands of searing eyes that heard ‘Todoroki’ and assumed the worst of him, he developed a grudge.

Now, he was one of the many watchful eyes as the new first years got publicly sorted into a personality group. His twin, Fuyumi, clad in blue sat primly by his side. Her grey eyes scanned the crowd for their younger siblings who would be placed in their house once the opening speeches finished. Idly, he wondered what traits they would be reduced to. Natsuo was a Gryffindor through and through, but Shouto was more complicated. He was intelligent but naive, kind but cold, brave but not reckless. Really, it could be anything.

“And now, to sort our first years into their houses!” The headmaster’s voice carried throughout the entire hall thanks to a spell and everyone perked up.

“Katsuki Bakugou!” Touya leaned back and rolled his neck as the first name was called. He almost felt bad for the poor kid, but one look at who sauntered up and his mind changed immediately. They hadn’t even said a word and Touya knew the kid was a brat. The second-year audibly groaned when the hat cheerfully called out, “Ravenclaw!”

Name after name rang out in the hall as over two hundred first years got placed. Through the crowd, green eyes met his blue. The kid looked scared out of their mind and seemed to want to spontaneously learn a vanishing spell. Pretty eyes stared, brimming with unshed tears that vindicated Touya’s hatred of the sorting ceremony. The sad kitten look on the kid’s face made him want to go over and reassure the first year, but he couldn’t. Instead, he settled for softening his face and giving the kid a smile. He wasn’t sure if it’d be seen through the hoard of students, but the green-eyed child relaxed slightly and gave a small smile back.

“Izuku Midoriya!” The spell that held Touya and the first-year in its grasp broke as the kid made his way up to the stool.

Izuku Midoriya, huh? Cute name and oddly fitting.

The hat took a minute, resting on top of the kid’s messy curls and looking contemplative. Red spread across round cheeks as the eleven-year-old waited anxiously.

“Slytherin!” The hat’s final verdict rang out loud and clear. The newly dubbed baby snake hopped off the stool and ran off to where his new house sat. Coincidentally, the Slytherin table was right next to Ravenclaw and Touya was able to get a better look at the kid.

Izuku was small, and not just because they were eleven, but in general. Their green eyes seemed to glow in the candlelit hall as they stayed trained on the sorting stool. Clearly interested in the sorting as a whole but not interested in having everyone’s attention. Dark, messy curls that looked incredibly soft seemed to have a green mixed in with the black. Not unusual since Touya’s own hair was pure white, but still different. Freckles scattered across chubby cheeks were the cutest thing the Ravenclaw noted. The kid had constellations on his face and Touya was struck with the desire to map them out.

“Natsuo Todoroki!” His brother’s name snapped his blue gaze off the newly appointed Slytherin and back to the front. Fuyumi side-eyed him with a strange look on her face. He nudged her with his elbow, not wanting to get involved with whatever she was thinking.

“Gryffindor!”

Ha! Called it.

“Shouto Todoroki!” All three Todoroki siblings leaned forward, eager to know the decision.

“Hufflepuff!” Fuyumi leaned back in her seat, placing a finger to her lips as she thought.

“You know, that actually makes sense.” She concludes, turning to her twin to confirm.

“I see it.” He agrees easily. The rest of the sorting passes and finally, they can eat. Touya’s gaze never strayed far from the curly-haired first year.

The first week of the new school year passed in a hectic blur as the first years learned the ropes and every other year re-settled in. Touya had almost forgotten about the green-eyed first year amidst all the chaos until he saw them again. They were in the courtyard alone with their nose in a book. The black and green robe was being used as a blanket so they could comfortably sit on the grass. Touya weighed the pros and cons of interrupting the kid before deciding to approach anyway.

“How are you settling in?” The kid jumped with a cute little squeak, their book flying out of their hands. “Sorry! I thought I was loud enough to not startle you.”

“I was just really deep in thought. I can’t hear anything when I get to that state.” The kid explained, eyes wide looking up at him. “I remember you!”

“You do?” Touya shrugged off his house cloak and placed it on the ground so he could sit with the kid.

“Yeah!” Black and green curls bounced with the heavy nod the kid gave. “I was super nervous, like on the verge of an anxiety attack, nervous, but you smiled at me through the crowd and you have a really nice smile by the way, it made me feel calmer which is hard because I am like never, ever calm, but you made me feel calm. Oh gosh, were you even looking at me?! I am so sorry, -”

“Hey, calm down. I was looking at you. I saw that you seemed nervous and I’m glad I could help.” Touya interrupted the Slytherin patiently. “I’m Touya, second year Ravenclaw, he/him.” He introduced, holding out a very pale, slender hand. Despite being outside frequently, he was unable to tan even slightly without burning.

“Oh, well thank you. I’m Izuku, first year Slytherin, also he/him. It’s nice to meet you!” Izuku’s hand was nearly just as pale, only a shade or two tanner, and much smaller. It was warm in his grasp despite the chill autumn air around them. “I’ll be honest, I didn’t know you could interact with anyone outside your house.”

“You are allowed, if that’s what you’re wondering. It just is not very common in the first year since people stick to their own houses and assume there’s a rivalry between the houses. It’s more common the older you are.” Explained the Ravenclaw as he picked at the grass by his knees. “What were you reading?”

Izuku’s eyes lit up as he picked up the discarded book and began explaining it in detail.

Touya and Izuku were fast friends, much to the surprise of anyone who had ever met the former. The two could almost always be found in either the courtyard or the library and they were always together. By the end of their first/second year, they were inseparable.

Second/third year started normally with all the fanfare of a new group of students to watch get sorted. Izuku was well aware of Touya’s hatred of the ceremony and spent the entire time keeping him distracted with the latest book he read. Fuyumi spared a single, exasperated glance their way before leaving them be.

Touya was able to go to Hogsmeade for the first time as a student. At first, he planned to wait another year so he and Izuku could go together, but the Slytherin talked him out of it.

“Come on, Touya! You can go and have fun, find out the best places to go. And next year, when I can go, you can show me around!” Izuku flapped his arms excitedly, hopping backwards to face his friend as they walked around the grounds. “Just bring me back something nice.”

“What would you want?”

“Oh, whatever you want to give me.” The Slytherin answered dismissively.

Third year for Izuku left him dragged around Hogsmeade by Touya who was more than eager to show his friend his favourite places. The Ravenclaw was glad he went with his friend’s suggestion and led the green-eyed boy around, hands linked so they couldn’t get separated. They ended at the Three Broomsticks to rest, eat, and chat.

“This is Dabi!” Izuku introduced his blue-eyed Leucistic ball python, newly acquired familiar, to his best friend. The snake poked its scaly white head from underneath the green and silver scarf. Blue met blue and Touya couldn’t help but feel the reptile looked similar to something he just couldn’t place.

Most students got their familiars their first or second year, but Izuku had been between homes during that time and only recently settled in with their Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Aizawa. Before learning that Izuku was the man’s ward, Touya was under the impression that the man permanently lived at Hogwarts.

“And how’s the new living situation? Is it weird living with our teacher?” The Ravenclaw wondered, one hand idly petting his own familiar; a long-haired black cat with yellow-green eyes he named Yami.

“Well, it was weird at first, but Aizawa’s really nice and so’s his husband. Much better than my last guardians.” Before Hogwarts, Izuku had been an orphan; mother dead and father unknown. He lived solely amongst muggles and since nobody could find out anything about his dad, he was presumed to be muggleborn. The complete opposite of Touya’s pureblood status and generational Hogwarts alumni in his family. He moved in with their teachers after his second year, much to Touya’s pleasure. He hated the tone Izuku’s letters carried over the summer. He always seemed upset and hurt, physically or emotionally he couldn’t tell, but hurt nonetheless.

Touya had been a beater for the Ravenclaw quidditch team since his second year. He was a fan of the sport since he was a little kid watching his mom and dad play. When his best friend told him he was planning to try out for seeker since the old one graduated, he was thrilled. He’d seen Izuku fly in passing and the Slytherin wasn’t just good he was a natural prodigy.

“You’ll be picked, no doubt. You are practically one with your broom!” Touya hyped up the nervous wreck he picked as a friend.

“Will you come watch my tryouts? If you’re allowed. Are you allowed?”

“Who cares if I’m allowed, I wouldn’t miss it.”

There was no other choice for seeker. Several people may have shown up to try out, but Izuku trumped all of them. From his place in the stands, Touya’s blue eyes stayed trained on the Slytherin’s form as if hypnotized. Granted, the Ravenclaw’s gaze rarely ever left Izuku, but his flying was something else.

Izuku did end up getting picked as seeker. He won his first match catching the snitch against Gryffindor who just couldn’t keep up. Touya cheered for Slytherin until his voice was hoarse. He couldn’t wait to play against the team.

Fourth/fifth year, Izuku discovered a secret to the second-floor girl’s bathroom, or more accurately; Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom. He dragged Touya there on a weekend, Dabi wrapped around his neck as per usual, his friend’s emo ball of fluff trailing behind them dutifully.

“So why are we here?” Touya asked once the doors closed behind them and he came to a stop. Yami climbed his cloak to wrap himself around his owner’s shoulders like a fluffy shawl.

“Well, I was overwhelmed the first week, as I usually am, so I decided to hide out in here while I had a panic attack, as one does, and Dabi was trying to calm me down, like he usually does, so we were chatting, well he was chatting, I was ugly crying, but when I was coherent enough to actually say something, the sink did something weird.” Izuku often mentioned he had conversations with his ball python, however, this was the first time he ever implied that Dabi spoke back .

“Well, what did the sink do?” The Ravenclaw wondered, staring the snake down. Blue met blue and neither backed down.

“Touya! He’s not going to talk to you, you can’t understand him.” Izuku chastised, patting the top of Dabi’s head lightly. “And the sink opened! Like opened up when I said the word, but only when I said it the same way I talk to Dabi. It’s kinda vibrate-y and doesn’t sound like words in my mouth but I hear them clear as day and so can Dabi. Here, let me just show you.”

The duo walked over to the sink in the center of the room. Myrtle was nowhere in sight, eager to leave the pair alone. She wasn’t a fan of the overly talkative Slytherin or the standoffish Ravenclaw. Izuku ran slim fingers over a metal snake decal and took a deep breath.

Open ” Izuku made a series of noises that didn’t sound like any language Touya had ever heard, and he travelled a lot. The sink began to move and opened up to reveal an entrance. The blue-eyed teen knew exactly what was happening now.

“Zu, I think you just opened the Chamber of Secrets.”

“But, wouldn’t that make me-”

“The Heir of Slytherin, yep.” Touya finished the sentence breathily as if he didn’t want to hear it said.

“Huh. That’s interesting.”

“At least we don’t have to worry about the Basilisk. That thing was defeated like a century ago.”

“Well, that’s good to know. Really makes me wonder about my bio dad, because my bio mom was a muggle and so were her parents.”

“Really makes you curious.” The two fell into a contemplative silence, staring at the gaping hole directly in front of them.

“Wanna go in?” Izuku asked quietly, not moving an inch.

“Hell yeah!”

Fifth/sixth year saw the arrival of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students for the Triwizard Tournament. Lots of new faces flooded the Great Hall and everyone was eager to get to know the foreigners. Touya even found himself conversing with a boy from Beauxbatons who introduced himself as Keigo. He was actually fun to talk to, despite the Ravenclaw’s introvert status.

While the French exchange student compared their uniforms, Touya’s blue gaze searched the sea of students familiar and new, looking for one in particular. Izuku stood amongst at least a dozen students from both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, eagerly chatting with all of them. As if knowing he was being watched, the Slytherin turned ever-so-slightly in between words and caught his eyes. He flashed a bright smile and nodded before turning back to the group he had hanging off his every word.

“He’s cute.” Keigo noted, his accent not quite French but something Touya couldn’t place. He froze, slowly moving his eyes off his friend’s figure.

“Who is?” He asked tensely.

“The green one you were staring at. He’s very cute.” A pang of annoyance shot through Touya for reasons he couldn’t explain. “Rumi’s even talking to him and she is not a people person.” The French student grabbed his wrist and began walking towards the group.

“What are you doing?” Touya tugged his arm from the other boy’s grasp and tried to make him stop.

“Joining their conversation, silly. Why, are you shy?”

Touya shut his mouth and reluctantly allowed himself to be pulled into Izuku’s conversation. He was noticed by his friend immediately who decided to introduce him to the boy’s new friends.

“Touya! This is Kai Chisaki, Yo Shindo, Mei Hatsume, Inasa Yoarashi, Himiko Toga, and Tomura Shigaraki from Durmstrang.” Izuku introduced each student who waved at the sound of their name. “Yuuga Aoyama, Rumi Usagiyama, Camie Utsushimi, Mina Ashido, Denki Kaminari, and Mirio Togata from Beauxbatons. Guys, this is my best friend, Touya!”

“It’s nice to meet you.” The Ravenclaw greeted politely even though he forgot all of their names as soon as they were introduced.

“I’m Keigo Takami from Beauxbatons!” His previous conversation partner introduced himself eagerly to only Izuku. Touya did not like the look on the new guy’s face.

Touya had no interest in participating in the Triwizard Tournament but Izuku was, so he went with the boy to put his name in the Goblet of Fire. Throughout the years of the Tournament, many things about it changed. After an incident in the 1990s, two students from each school were chosen to compete, a fourth task was added to show off academic prowess, and other games were offered in between tasks so the other students didn’t feel left out. Also, a permission slip had to be signed by a parent or guardian if you wanted to compete which really should’ve been added from the start.

Once everyone who wanted to compete in the tournament placed their names in the Goblet of Fire, it was time for the Champions to be picked. After dinner in the Great Hall, everyone waited in anticipation to find out who’d be competing. Touya stood side by side with Fuyumi, neither having put their name in, wondering who it would be.

Hogwarts’ mousy-looking Headmaster stood at the front with Emi Fukukado, the Beauxbatons Headmistress, and Hisashi Shigaraki, the Durmstrang Headmaster, on each side of him. The goblet lit up, ready to spit six names out.

Hisashi stepped up first, pompous and cocky. His pure white curls and freckles were out of place on the man who looked like he probably committed at least one crime. At least the red eyes made sense. The goblet spat out two pieces of paper into the man’s waiting hand and he opened them up to read out his school’s champions.

“Tomura Shigaraki and Himiko Toga!” The headmaster shouted out the names which Touya recognized. They were both part of the group that Izuku charmed with his Izuku-ness. Tomura also had the same last name as Hisashi and even looked like him. He wondered if they were related or if that was just a coincidence.

Emi hopped up next, her boisterous personality lighting the room up. The students from the French school leaned forward in excitement, hoping their name was the one picked. The green-haired woman waved her hand over the goblet, and shrieked, pretending that it burned her. The hall erupted in laughter, tension dying out. Once it was silent again, two little notes flew out and the woman caught both midair.

“Rumi Usagiyama and Keigo Takami! Get up here you two!” Touya growled slightly at the second name, startling his twin who looked at him with concern.

Finally, Nedzu approached the goblet to announce the last two Champions. He was far shorter than the other two school heads, but that didn’t bother him. He perched on Professor Aizawa’s shoulders and allowed the teacher to receive the names. Once two pieces of paper were in his palm, the black-haired man tiredly handed them to his boss.

“Izuku Midoriya,” Aizawa’s face shuddered at the name that was announced. Most would have missed the quick show of emotion, though. “and Shouto Todoroki!”

Fuyumi jumped back with wide eyes. “Did you know he was putting his name in the Goblet of Fire?”

“No, he didn’t tell me anything.” Touya whispered back, eyes locked onto his younger brother who stood stiffly next to Izuku’s small form.

The first task was a test of academic and magic knowledge. The contests worked individually to show off defence and offence spells, duelling, potion-making, transfiguration, etc. There was a small portion for everything they were taught. Izuku and Shouto were ranked second and third respectively in their year, so Touya was rooting for them to come out on top. He didn’t know who to root for more, though; his brother or his best friend. He stuck with equally cheering them both on.

Tomura and Keigo were both surprisingly intelligent. Himiko, on the other hand, was not as academically gifted. Rumi fell somewhere in the middle. She seemed to be more athletic than scholastic and was sure to shine in later tasks.

Shouto ranked first and Izuku second. They had been tied throughout most of the tasks, Shouto beating him out only slightly due to being better at duelling. Tomura ranked third, Keigo ranked fourth, Rumi ranked fifth, and Himiko ranked sixth.

The second task was far more exciting to watch and showed off both athletic skills and wandless magic. An obstacle course, no doubt designed by Nedzu, took over the entire quidditch field and went at least four hundred feet in the air. Brooms and wands were forbidden and spells were placed everywhere to prevent death should someone fall.

One of Shouto’s many talents included an ice spell that didn’t require a wand or words, which came in handy. Rumi finally got to show off her strengths while Tomura proved he had the upper body strength of a snail. Keigo was incredibly fast and agile. Izuku and Shouto were, once again, around the same level of skill with Shouto’s ice magic giving him a slight edge. Himiko was not athletic either but still did better than her schoolmate.

The winner was Keigo due to his incredible speed. Then Rumi in second, Shouto in third, Izuku in fourth, Himiko in fifth, and Tomura in sixth.

With the second task finished, the tournament was halfway over and it was time for Christmas. More importantly, it was time for the Yule Ball. Everyone who enjoyed dressing up and being surrounded by people was excitedly chattering about what they were going to wear and who they were going to bring. Not everyone had to bring a date except for the Champions who were required to.

“Touya~” Izuku whined, poking the boy in the cheek, his snake doing the same to the other cheek.

“What is it, Zu?” Blue eyes peeked over the edge of the book his nose was in. He blinked slowly and lowered the object to give his friend his full attention.

“Will you be my date to the Yule Ball? Apparently, I’m required to bring someone and I really don’t want to go with anyone else, so please accompany me! I know you hate crowds and parties in general, so I won’t make you stay long. I promise.” The Hogwarts Champion begged, tugging on the edge of his cloak.

“Of course I’ll go with you.” Touya accepted easily, heart fluttering at the smile his best friend flashed at him.

Shouto ended up inviting a Gryffindor named Hitoshi as his date. They were apparently close friends, probably more if the way they looked at each other was any indication. Himiko invited a Hufflepuff named Ochaco. Rumi ended up inviting Fuyumi, which surprised all four siblings. Even more surprising, Natsuo was invited by Tomura, meaning all Todoroki children were going to participate in the Champion’s Dance at the ball. Keigo ended up inviting a petite sixth-year Slytherin with pitch-black hair and jungle green eyes. Izuku recognized her as an upperclassman who often hung around a Hufflepuff.

Despite hating crowds, loud noises, and parties in general, Touya found himself having a fantastic time. After the opening dance, he spent the entire evening glued to Izuku’s side. They flitted through the crowd, having conversations here and there with nearly everyone. The Ravenclaw was content to be dragged around and just watch as Izuku’s charisma charmed every person he met.

They approached the other Champions and their dates. Shouto and Hitoshi were a match made in antisocial heaven, as they ducked out as soon as they were no longer needed. Fuyumi and Rumi made small talk with Keigo’s date. All three were the exact same height, Touya noted, including Izuku who hopped into the girls’ conversation with no hesitation. Natsuo greeted his older brother briefly before dragging Tomura to the dance floor.

Keigo and Touya were left standing next to each other awkwardly, their dates too busy in a discussion with what the French student dubbed ‘Rumiyumi ’. Touya didn’t want to admit it, but the nickname was cute. For some reason, Keigo’s existence didn’t bother the Ravenclaw after he found a date in a Slytherin that wasn’t Izuku. He didn’t know why or what it meant, but he’d take it.

Eventually, the party died out and students morosely bid their dates and friends a goodnight. Touya walked Izuku all the way to the Slytherin common room, reluctant for their night to end. The Champion was dead on his feet, yawning the entire way, but he seemed just as opposed to part. Of course, they did in the end. When Izuku released Touya’s hand to head inside, a pang shot through his body. Whether the Slytherin was in his presence or not, it made him feel weird and he just couldn’t place why.

xXx

The new year started off with the third task which involved the Black Lake. Who wants to go swimming in January? Shouto, actually. He was more than excited for some mid-winter swimming until he found out the rest of the task.

Each contestant received a sheet of paper that only they could unlock. On the paper was a list of things that would be hidden in the lake. Each object was spelled so it could only be grabbed by the proper owner and each list was unique. Essentially, the third task was an underwater scavenger hunt. An enchantment would follow the contestants around so the spectators could actually see what was going on and not just stare at a lake for an hour.

Every object had points to them, some more than others. How many objects are found combined with how long it takes to find each one makes the scoring system. Shouto was absolutely screwed. The poor Hufflepuff, despite the house being known for finding things, constantly lost things and could never find them on his own. He ended up getting himself lost in the lake and only found one object by accident.

Izuku came in first, realizing a pattern between the objects and their hiding places. It was fascinating and hilarious to watch him try and mumble his discoveries underwater. Keigo came second, his speed once again carrying him through the task. He also had incredible eyesight, even underwater, and could spot his objects from quite a distance away. Rumi came third, complaining heavily about the freezing water. Tomura was fourth, he would’ve been third but he accidentally turned two of his objects to dust which knocked him down. Himiko came in fifth with only three objects found. Poor Shouto came last, one of the teachers having to help him find his way back to the surface.

The fourth, and final, task was how Touya knew his best friend was going to come out on top. A flying competition where each contestant got on their brooms and had to fly through white magic hoops to turn them their colour and gain points. Obstacles were in the form of objects enchanted to chase after each player to throw them off and other players who were permitted to use their wands. Certain spells were banned, but everything else was fair game.

Each Champion got to pick their colour; Keigo-red, Rumi-indigo, Shouto-lilac(for some reason), Himiko-pink, Tomura-baby blue, and Izuku-green. When the ref yelled “Start!” all six contestants shot into the air.

Izuku’s deadly elegance on his broom captured Touya’s attention from the beginning of the match and it never wavered. No matter how good the others were, Izuku was better; flying through the air lightning-fast, dodging everything in his way and stealing points left and right. He never engaged with the other players who were attempting to duel each other midair. It was almost difficult for the human eye to keep up with the Slytherin’s flying.

When the time ran out, Izuku stood in first by nearly one hundred points. Keigo in second and Tomura close in third. Rumi came fourth. Shouto came fifth as he and Fuyumi were the only Todorokis who weren’t good at flying. Himiko came sixth, apparently only knowing the bare minimum of flying.

The overall winner of the Triwizard Tournament was Izuku. Second and third place went to Keigo and Shouto. Fourth through sixth place went to Rumi, Tomura, and Himiko.

The year ended with soft farewells between the three schools. Touya ended up bidding Keigo goodbye with the promise to write before surrendering him to his own Slytherin. Fuyumi took a series of deep breaths, pushed past her twin, and captured Rumi in a soft kiss.

“Write to me,” the Ravenclaw whispered against the Champion’s mouth. Touya watched the interaction feeling a sense of longing that he couldn’t explain. He didn’t want to kiss Rumi and definitely not Fuyumi, so why?

“They make such a cute couple!” Izuku’s whisper startled Touya out of his thoughts. The much smaller teen’s body was completely hidden behind him as he stood on the very tips of his toes to see over his friend’s shoulder. His breath hit the white-haired boy’s cheek and his entire body went warm.

Ah, I’m not jealous of Fuyumi, I just want to kiss Izuku. So he did.

Izuku froze, lips parted in surprise when Touya pulled back. A pretty shade of red settled across his cheeks as he lifted his hand to his mouth. “Uhmm, huh?” The grand winner squeaked.

“Sorry, I should’ve asked first, but I really wanted to kiss you.”

“That’s fine, more than fine actually. You are free to kiss me whenever you want because you are my best friend and I like you a lot and I’m really glad you kissed me because I’ve been wanting to fo-” Touya cut into Izuku’s mumbling with another kiss, this one reciprocated.

xXx

Touya’s seventh year started off with his boyfriend throwing himself at him for a koala hug. Yami stood a safe distance away, allowing himself to be climbed by his own snake friend. He captured his Slytherin’s mouth in a loving kiss, resting their foreheads together.

“I missed you, baby snake.”

“And I you.”
