The perfect boyfriends

Summary:

Kageyama and Tsukishima arrive home to a hysterical Hinata and immediately prepare to beat someone up because how dare someone make Hinata cry!!

Basically hinata watches the Doomsday episode of Doctor Who and reacts the same way I did (which was a lot of sobbing).

(You don't have to have seen Doctor Who to understand!)

Work Text:

Hinata started watching Doctor Who because it's one of Kei's favorite shows, and after watching a few episodes with his wonderfully nerdy boyfriend, Hinata had become quite the fan. He loves Rose. Her desire to abandon a mundane life to explore space and time is something Hinata can relate to. He's pretty sure if he couldn't fly in volleyball at least, he would go crazy!

Hinata is lying on the couch, eyes wide, and tears streaming down his face as he watches Rose get ripped into an alternate universe and find out she's stuck. A deep seated sadness settles in his stomach when he watches The Doctor rests his face on the wall, universes away, longing for Rose. A sob rips from his chest as Rose does the same, somehow feeling The Doctor across from her. He cries as she cries, grief over the loss of someone that doesn't even exist filling every part of his body.

Hinata smacks a hand over his mouth as The Doctor projects himself into Rose's dimension for one last goodbye.

"Am I ever going to see you again?" Rose cries.

"You can't." The Doctor replies solemnly.

Hinata cradles his arms to his chest, now sobbing brokenly. This is it, then? The end of The Doctor and Rose's journey? "No..." He says out loud, wishing for it not to be true. They're so perfect together, they can't be separated! It's not fair!

"I l-" Rose chokes over her words. "I love you." She says, breaking into sobs.

The camera flips to The Doctor.

"And I suppose, if it's my last chance to say," He pauses.

"SAY IT!" Hinata sobs from the couch, sitting up now. "You have to say it."

"Rose Tyler..."

"Come on! Say-" Hinata gasps.

The Doctor disappears before he has a chance to finish.

"NONONONONONONO!" Hinata sobs loudly, his cries echoing in the apartment. "They can't end it like that!" Hinata doesn't think he's ever cried over fictional characters so hard before, but it feels like someone's sliced his chest open and left him to fix himself. He wants his boyfriends. Oh god, what if something like that happened to them? What if Hinata never had the chance to say "I love you" again? Oh god- Hinata picks up his phone and dials the groupchat between him, Tsukishima, and Kageyama.

The phone rings, and Hinata's cries only get harder. He's never been one to watch shows like this, and he's especially never been so emotionally attached to a character. He doesn't know why he feels like this, but all he knows is he needs to tell his boyfriends he loves them, and he wants them here now.

"Hello?" Tobio answers first and a high pitched whine escapes Hinata's throat.

A ding indicates Tsukishima has joined the call as well. "Sho? Baby, what's wrong?"

Hinata inhales shakily before wailing, "I love you so much!" The cries echoing through the phone only get louder after Hinata makes his confession.

"Hey, can you tell us what's going on?" Kageyama asks softly, trying to calm his upset boyfriend.

"Can- can you please come home?" He hiccups.

"Of course, Sho! I'm picking Tobio up now. We'll be there soon." Tsukishima assures.

"Promise?" Hinata asks in a small voice.

"Promise, sunshine. We'll be there soon. Why don't you drink some water and try to breathe deeply while you wait?" Tsukishima suggests.

Hinata trips over his breaths a few more times before responding "okay" in a small voice and hanging up.

"Kei?" Kageyama says, glancing at his boyfriend.

"Yeah?"

"Drive faster please..."

"Already am." Tsukishima responds, pressing his foot further on the gas pedal. "I swear to god if someone hurt him..." Tsukishima's hands tighten on the wheel, knuckles turning white.

"I know." Kageyama interrupts, "Me too."

It's not long before the two men are stumbling into their shared apartment, fired up and ready to fight whoever hurt their precious boyfriend.

Hinata's curled up on the couch when they open the door, but when he hears his boyfriends enter, he jumps up to greet them in a big group hug. He's still shaking softly with cries, but he's calmed down a lot since the call.

Tsukishima and Kageyama hold their boyfriend tight, stroking his back gently, and playing with his hair. Hinata leans into the touch in a needy way. "What happened, Sho? Who hurt you?" The soft tone Tsukishima addresses his boyfriend in is cut with an edge of intensity when he asks who hurt him. Tsukishima won't be letting anyone get away with making his precious sunshine cry.

Hinata's brain halts when he hear's Tsukishima's question and angry tone. "W-WHAT?" He squawks, pulling away from the hold slightly. "N-no one hurt me, I just-" Hinata pauses, now all too aware that he's sobbing over the (not even) death of a fictional character... Heat rises to his cheeks. His boyfriends are never letting him live this down.

Kageyama leans down to kiss Hinata's temple. "What's going on Sunshine? Why are you crying?" He brings his thumb under Hinata's eye to gently wipe the tears as they continue to fall, and cups Hinata's cheek in his hand.

Hinata sniffles, trying to calm his hitching breaths before admitting the embarrassing reason he's so broken up. "I... was watching Doctor Who..." Tsukishima's brow shoots up in sudden understanding. "I- Rose- She's..." The lump that had finally begun receding in Hinata's throat comes back with a vengeance as he's reminded of the reason he's so upset.

"Doctor Who made you cry?" Kageyama asks flatly. He's seen a few episodes here and there, but he prefers Star Trek.

Tsukishima turns to the TV, confirming his suspicions. "Oh baby..." He says before scooping Hinata up and sitting on the couch, pulling his smaller boyfriend to sit in his lap. Kageyama follows. Hinata buries his face in Tsukishima's shoulder, starting to cry again after remembering the last scene he'd watched. "I told you not to watch this episode without me." Tsukishima mumbles in Hinata's shoulder, arm wrapped completely around him. Kageyama sits next to them, running his hands through Hinata's hair. He might not understand why his boyfriend is so upset, but that doesn't mean he's not going to comfort him.

Hinata sniffles before tilting his head up to look at Tsukishima. "I didn't realize what episode it was... I never- I never thought-" The sob building up in his throat breaks free. "He- he didn't get to say- I love you!" Hinata cries. "She- didn't get to hear it! It's not- It's not FAIR!" The dam breaks once more and Tsukishima begins rocking them back and forth, trying to calm Hinata down.

"Hey, why don't I make some hot chocolate, and we can get out the blankets and make a pillow fort and watch a movie?" Kageyama suggests, knowing Hinata probably just needs something he can relax to. "We can cuddle, and eat popcorn too!" He adds.

Hinata shyly angles his head to look at Kageyama. "okay..." He agrees in a small voice.

Kageyama stands, heading to the kitchen. "Why don't you guys make the pillow fort while I prepare the food?" When Hinata doesn't answer himself, Tsukishima makes eye contact with Kageyama and nods.

Tsukishima squeezes Hinata tight."I'm sorry..." The redhead mumbles, nuzzling his head into Tsukishima's neck.

"Why are you sorry?" Tsukishima asks, muffled by Hinata's hair.

"It's stupid! They're not real!" Hinata exclaims.

"That episode sucks. When I watched it, I cried probably as hard you did, for about, mmm... 3 hours?" Hinata chuckles. "Seriously, people cry over fictional characters all the time. There's nothing weird or stupid about it. That's why I didn't want you to watch it alone. I had a feeling you'd have a hard time." Tsukishima rocks back and forth for a bit before standing with Hinata still wrapped in his arms. They head to the bedroom to grab some pillows and blankets to build the fort with and get started.

They're done by the time Kageyama comes from the kitchen with hot chocolate and a bowl of popcorn. "How are you feeling?" He asks Hinata softly, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead. He sets the items on the floor in the fort.

"Better." Hinata mumbles, leaning into the kiss, and reaching to grab Kageyama's hand. "C'mere." He insists, pulling his boyfriend further into the pillow fort to lie with him and Tsukishima.

Kageyama stumbles and falls gently on top of Hinata. He lifts himself up on both arms, and stares into golden brown eyes. "Hi." He whispers, smiling at the smaller boy.

"Hi." Hinata whispers back, smiling brightly. He turns his gaze to the blond lying next to him, intertwining their hands before bringing them to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss on the back of Tsukishima's hand. "Hi." He whispers to Tsukishima.

Tsukishima rolls his eyes before replying "Hi" in a flat tone, and scooting closer to the two others. He kisses Hinata's cheek before leaning up and giving Kageyama a peck on the lips. "Thank you for making food." He says in a low tone. He presses his forehead against the dark haired boy's, cupping his free hand around the back of his neck then kissing his forehead softly. He turns to Hinata. "What do you want to watch, bug?"

Hinata flushes at the nickname. "um... Can we watch How to Train your Dragon?"

Tsukishima smiles at the suggestion. It's a group favorite. "Of course we can!" They turn the movie on and get settled in the fort. Hinata's in the middle, legs propped in Tsukishima's lap, where the blond strokes soft circles into his shin. His head is lying in Kageyama's lap, the setter playing with the bright orange curls. Both taller boy's free arms sit on the back of the couch, hands intertwined. Hinata is glad he has such amazing boyfriends. He was embarrassed about his extreme reaction before Tsukishima told him about his own experience, and even though Kageyama's never experienced it, he hasn't judged Hinata for anything. They both take such great care of him.

"Kei? Tobio?" Hinata calls quietly.

They both turn their eyes to him. "Yeah honey?" Tsukishima asks.

"I love you. So much." Hinata says earnestly. "Thank you for taking care of me."

Tsukishima and Kageyama both fondly smile at the boy who has them wrapped around his finger and isn't even aware of it.

"Love you too, bug." Tsukishima responds, squeezing Hinata's leg.

"Love you too, dumbass." Kageyama responds with a slight smirk.

Hinata flicks his thigh. In response, Kageyama ruffles his hair. Hinata reaches to grab Kageyama's hand, but the setter is faster, and sneaks his hand to tickle Hinata's ribs. Hinata squeals and kicks his legs in an instinctual reaction, but Tsukishima holds them down tightly. Hinata is laughing wildly and gasping for air as his boyfriends tickle him. "OkayoKAYOKAYAHAHAOKAY OKAYHAHA ST-STOP HAHAHA" Hinata pleads. The hands stop prodding and start stroking softly, helping him calm down. "Mean!" Hinata mumbles, burying his head into Kageyama's thigh, still catching his breath. Hinata feels warm and loved between his two favorite people in the world. His eyes start to droop in exhaustion as the adrenaline crashes. He snuggles into the warmth of the bodies under him, letting himself fall asleep.
