Chapter Text
Hinata’s planning to go to Brazil. He’s fresh from graduation, and fresh from a fight with his boyfriend. He’s sitting by the stairs near their court, still in his uniform, with his nose red from sniffing and his eyes tired from crying. He just graduated this morning, and in the afternoon that followed, he told his boyfriend that he’s going to Brazil to train for volleyball. That caused them to fight. Hinata thinks it’s stupid, because he thought Tsukishima would be proud, would be happy for him.
But instead, he was met with a displeased look. Tsukishima wasn’t happy about it. He didn’t like the idea, so he tried to speak Hinata out of it—that led them to argue. Tsukishima said, are you really going to dedicate your life to volleyball? , Hinata answered with a bold yes. And so it led Tsukishima to say he’s wasting his life.
And that hurt. Hinata knows that Tsukishima only worries for him-he knows that Tsukishima just thinks it’s better if Hinata graduates from college first, or something. That way, he could get a proper job if he ever wants to retire from volleyball.
But he was dumb to think that. Volleyball’s everything Hinata thinks about, it’s almost his life-if only he didn't have a boyfriend or grades to maintain.
Hinata sniffled, burying his chin into his forearm while his blurry eyes stared on the floor. He clutched his phone and his certificate in one hand, his phone’s been buzzing since earlier, but he’s too busy to even notice or think about it. He feels pathetic, his eyes begin to strain, and it was only about time. He groaned, putting his things down and pressing his fingers against his puffy eyes.
“Shit…” Hinata muttered, thoughts going haywire as he tried to calm himself down. He fails, and sobs escape him again. Tsukishima looked so upset earlier. Is this it? Is this the final straw? Will they break up because of this? Hinata’s cries, that momentarily calmed down, came back even stronger. Now he’s worrying about something else. How does he talk to Tsukishima again? Will they even answer him?
What a funny thing. It’s graduation day, he should be with his friends partying, having the time of his life-but he’s here, crying all alone.
“This is where you’ve been?”
The ginger lifts his head. He finds his boyfriend in front of him, panting, with sweat running down his chin. He looks tired, like he’s been running around everywhere. His uniform’s all ragged, his hair’s all wet. His cheeks are red from exhaustion and well, it looks like he came from extreme training.
“Don’t you know how long I’ve been looking for you?” Tsukishima says with the small amount of energy he has left. He sounds so tired. “Learn to answer your phone, god damn it.”
“W-what are you doing here?” Hinata asks, wiping his tears away. He gets up, leaving his phone on the ground and trying to maintain his breathing so he doesn't helplessly cry in front of Tsukishima. “I’m-”
“I’m sorry.” Tsukishima interrupts, “I shouldn't have shouted at you earlier.”
Hinata is caught off guard. He shakes his head and his hands, “N-no. Don’t be. I mean, I was being irrational! It probably wasn't a good idea to…” He sighs. “I’ll reconsider my decisions, I shouldn't have decided on my own-”
“No, Shouyou, it was wrong of me to react like that.”
“No…” Hinata sniffed, hiding his eyes under trembling hands. “It was stupid of me…”
Tsukishima takes a hold of Hinata’s hand and he brings it to his lips. Hinata’s hands were shaking. It was obvious he had been crying for so long. Tsukishima felt a tinge in his heart. He shouldn't have left the way he did earlier. They should've talked it out like adults. But that’s the thing-they aren’t adults. They’re just kids trying so hard to get the future they want. Tsukishima let out a heavy sigh, he was disappointed in himself. He inches closer slowly and tries to hug Hinata. He looked for signs of rejection, he felt like Hinata was going to turn him away, but he didn’t-the ginger accepted the hug wholeheartedly.
Tsukishima buried his face in his boyfriend’s bright orange locks. The way Hinata accepted him reassured Tsukishima that… Well, Hinata didn’t hate him just yet. It took a few seconds for Hinata to wrap his arms around the blonde, they stood in silence, and it seemed like Hinata’s sobs finally calmed down. The ginger lifted his chin and leaned it on Tsukishima’s shoulder, he sniffled and patted the latter’s back.
“Where’s everyone else?”
“Partying without us.”
“You know you didn’t have to look for me, right?”
“How could I do that?” Tsukishima looks down on Hinata. He combs Hinata’s hair up and kisses their forehead, “How could I enjoy myself without you? I’d only end up worrying and regret going.” Hinata scoffs. “In the end, I’d go look for you.”
“I want to say that I’m changing my mind.”
Hinata closes his eyes, not wanting to see the expression on Tsukishima’s face.
“But I really want to do this.”
The ginger feels Tsukishima’s hands drop from their cheeks. He chooses to ignore it, despite the anxiety growing inside the pit of his stomach.
“I’m leaving for Brazil, I’m really sorry because I didn’t tell you sooner. I’m going to come back after a few years, you can wait for me-”
“No.”
Hinata opens his eyes to see Tsukishima’s brows knitted together.
“N-no?”
“I’m not waiting for you.”
“That’s… fine. You don’t have to.”
Tsukishima steps away and holds his face. “Then this is it.” He cracks out a bitter smile. “Let’s break up.”
“... really?”
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy for you. I’m proud that you’re really doing everything for your dreams. But I’ll be honest with you, I don’t see myself in this dream of yours.”
“But you are!” Hinata says, trying to work with whatever’s left. “I want to live with you once I’m back, I want to make things work.”
“I don’t think it will, with you on the other side of the world.” Tsukishima looks down, Hinata latches his hand around Tsukishima’s wrist. The blonde removes it almost immediately. “I don’t want to wait for you. Believe me, things will be difficult for us. And even if we tried, I’m sure we’d break up along the way. This is for the better.”
