Jade Butterflies

Summary:

Jade is spinning an illusion when Jimmy interrupts.

Notes:

This is a little Jade ficlet for the amazing lavenderlotion on the Trans Day of Visibility. Lav, you rock!

This is technically a side story in my Secret Garden 'verse, but it's a standalone, no knowledge of the rest needed.

jade butterflies

The grass was long and wispy, tickling Jade's nose as she stretched out in it. White wildflowers bloomed and fairy lights danced among the blades as she began spinning her illusion.

Butterflies zoomed and darted and fluttered about her, thousands of them, in every color of the rainbow, but especially her favorite purples and blues and pinks. She wove them all into a complicated dance, spinning a complex symphony with her powers, stretching her abilities and exulting in the challenge.

Then it all vanished.

Jade sat up and looked around, knowing what had happened and why.

Sure enough, Jimmy stood a little ways away, eyes downcast, shoulders slumped. "I'm sorry," he said without looking up. "I just wanted to see the butterflies. I didn't mean to make them go away."

Any frustration or irritation she might have felt winged away like one of her butterflies. Jimmy couldn't help that his power was turning off other people's powers. Daddy and Papa both said it was an amazing power — well, Papa used rather more colorful language, language she wasn't supposed to know yet.

Jade got to her feet and went over to her brother. "It's okay. I know you didn't mean to." She hugged him hard enough that he let out a little squeak of surprise, then she kissed him on the cheek. "Sit down and I'll start over."

He dropped to the ground, and Jade scrambled back until she could feel her powers again. She took her own seat in the unmown grass, then she made the butterflies dance again.
