Work Text:
The Azur Lane community on Ao3 is one of both degenerate and dedicated simps. I found myself joining this community in search of lore and smut and after being with said community for several years, I was not disappointed. Therefore I thought it would be funny if I somehow summarized the entire community in three hours, so whether you’re a grizzled veteran who has endured “The Mist”, a newcomer who has no idea what the fuck I’m writing about, or even someone who has never read “The Mist" (which I would recommend for all the wrong reasons), then sit back, relax, and please enjoy an incorrect summary of the Azur Lane community on Archive of Our Own.
Part 1: Stories
Discovering this ancient website, we can divide the stories into three categories: The Smut, The Lore, and The WTF
The Smut is the most common fics you’ll see on Ao3. It’s where all your waifus get fucked by commanders who may or may not represent you or other separate entities/characters. Each story has some sort of intricate interaction or simply has you married to your waifu for a certain amount of time already. Depending on who you read, some may be good. Others may be cringe, and others just straight up commit atrocities and war crimes, which means someone or both parties have to suffer, but shit happens just so you can solve your raging boner.
Next up is The Lore, which is my favorite. These stories contain intricate plots and story arcs that make The Odyssey look like it was written by a three-year-old. They may take up to weeks to finish, but being the speed reader I am, I took it upon myself to speed read “The Napoleonic Gamer” and finish what has been completed so far in four different sessions with a total hour spent of about four hours. Besides that, they’re usually well written and there are quite a number of them out there, so it shouldn’t take you long to find one though they are majorly stacked against my smut.
The last one is The WTF. These stories have some sort of a surprise element, such as RagUI burning Wattpad for the demonic hell it is. They are sometimes worth the read, but there are a few that I just straight-up disliked. Reading knight7272’s fic, most of the time I’m bombarded with information on warships, which I don’t mind, but it gets boring after reading so many numbers associated with numerous things. Still, they’re few in numbers at times, so enjoy them while you still can.
Now all of these can be mixed into one story, and quite frankly there’s a lot. But now that we’ve spoken about these stories, let’s talk about the degenerates who are dedicated to this fandom.
Part 2: The Degenerate, Dedicated Authors
There are a lot of authors, so I’m gonna briefly summarize them. RagUI did a better job than me as he also included several stories, so go check out his story link at the end if you want to check it out.
First off we have GrandLevithan. Smut and lore guy who can somehow never run out of ideas despite having currently 282 stories related to Azur Lane, meaning (calculates how many characters are in Azur Lane) he has written about half of the characters in-game (505 if I calculated correctly). However, some of his stories containing war crimes, atrocities, and pedophilia. And the rate of speed of stories he churns out confirms my hunch he is under the influence of a speed demon, thereby making him a god in the community.
Second, we have Admiral_Fluffy, a legit writer who doesn’t do much smut (perhaps infer, but I’ll leave it up to you) who writes interesting characters and lore that’s wholesome. Having said that, he does infer some sexual jokes. I guess the community is gonna have to play catch-up, but besides that, his stories mostly comprise of insecure or just OK women who somehow finds a Commander as a soulmate through circumstance and the power of boners.
Third on my list is DelusionalCookie, who is someone extremely dedicated to Suruga and has boundaries to certain things (unlike some people). He will most likely convince you that she is worth it, and I can most definitely tell from the amount of people he has convinced that she is worth it. Despite clashing with Leviathan on multiple occasions, wholesome is something he has that is on a different level than Leviathan, making him one of the few people who I admire and respect.
Fourth, there is AkaneRiyun with his ridiculous lore. I have no idea how in the world his stories are this good and the anticipation and suspense he builds are beyond me to comprehend. He’s basically a Tolken, but even better. I've probably wasted my time piecing together the lore of his story that I've forgotten about that story written by that women writer on a magical world or something.
A more underrated and recent author is Rider_of_Black_00. His stories are a classic: everyone has a boner for the Commander or the main character has a boner for everyone or a combination of both. Whatever you think, things are always gonna get wild as they do dirty, dirty things in his fics. He also has a strong boner for Illustrious and Littorio, so try not to get in his way (or else something bad will happen, which is why I haven't oathed either yet)
Next up, we have the author ArchiveSlabe. He writes short stories and other one-shots, so if you’re short on time, definitely go read his fics if you’re bored waiting in lines at McDonalds when there are kids hogging up the cashiers.
Considering I’m lazy, I’m just gonna briefly go over people who write fics for their waifus.
- TheGearinator is another author who, like DelusionalCookie, is extremely dedicated to his waifu: Belfast. My man has some weird tastes, but he’s a cool dude.
- KillerSpoon575. A mommy lover who loves Fredrich Der Grobe and managed to convince me to oath her as my wife.
- WubstheRoserade: Just a Helena simp I met on Discord. If you ping him, he will kill you. That’s the fun fact why I haven't been online.
For 40k Warhammer enthusiasts or people interested in it, JustANewLeader is, hmm, your local Space Marine for heavy lore and exposition dump. He is the reason I had to watch entire hours of videos on 40k lore just so I could understand who certain people were and what was happening, so if you get lost, good. We live in a society where canonically the Horus Heresy, a galactic civil war in their universe, only made the emperor consume one thousand souls a day. So if you like getting confused like I did and want to be engulfed by 40k lore, by all means read his stuff.
If you’re looking for decent smut and wholesome content, Resilius is the best man out there for the job. A very good author who is very supportive of the community, he’s probably one of the best guys you would like to meet on Ao3. He has a variety of stories and characters which goes from opposite sides of the spectrum: from the dirtiest smut to heart-wrenching redeeming stories.
Then there’s MetusR, who has been picking up writing again. Like Fluffy, he writes good lore and has some inferred smut, but they’re well written with some heated competition and definitely worth your time to read (unlike this story written past midnight).
Assuming some of you have been baited by Jeff Bezos and watches Amazon Prime, then KTKloss is probably someone you should go check out, having written an Azur Lane version of the Man in the High Castle. Though short, it contains my favorite waifu, so if you want to see Bismarck survive and live to fight a third world war, then why are you still reading this.
Now some of you may be triggered by the excessive amount of atrocities and war crimes committed in some of these stories which is why you should be looking for someone who doesn’t write smut but redeems those certain stories. If so, then might I introduce you to RagUl. He has his characters insert themselves into worlds where things have gone wrong and solve them instead of the other characters in the stories who could have possibly solved it. He also has a series going, but he stopped because of unknown reasons so mass ping him please.
Given that some of you newcomers may be curious about whether there are excellent one-shots that aren't written by Leviathan, then Deuceposter and TH_Reader are probably your best bet. Both have excellent smut and are so extremely “detailed,” I normally find myself wondering what the hell I just read.
Let’s continue. Chess games are fun, but reading chess games is more fun. Sopkanam has written a series on a commander who likes to play chess, so writing this story the night before the state chess competition at six in the morning was a good way for me to theorize my advanced bongcloud opening that I’m still waiting for Sopkanam to write about. So whether you like the Sicilian or Italian game, one simply cannot counter a Fool's mate.
One of the more recent authors I’ve found is META2012, an author who has written an alternate anime universe clashing with Azur Lane. All I got was the power of plot convenience and boners will unite Azur Lane as most stories though the process is much more arduous and complicated as I had to go and learn what Code Geass was.
The final author I would talk about is FollowingMuscle75. The best story he's written is a story of a shipgirl going mad after finding out corruption was a thing and killing several friends, so basically the plot of any spy movie but it’s anime and is a lot better than whatever the Mission Impossible series has next.
The next two people are probably the biggest influencers and commenters in this community. First is KrispyTori, a fellow weeb and degenerate who is responsible for half the chaos and atrocities you see here in this fandom. As a result, #BlameKrispy will always be based, and I will forever hold him accountable for having Richelieu being [REDACTED] by [REDACTED].
The only other person who could rival him is knight7272, who is in quite a lot of fics. If you’re a history nerd who loves historical accuracy and facts, go talk with him. He can drag entire comments out with endless information that is both a blessing and a curse. The best way to get the full knight7272 experience is to chat with him.
Part 3: Conclusion
As you can tell, the Azur Lane community on Ao3 is not bad. It's not good either, but it has my escape from the third-world hellhole I live in called the United States. Caught in the middle of an existential crisis and thirst for more Azur Lane fanfics after reading Ryuma on YT, AverageAsian217 was born on Ao3 and has written possibly some of the worst stories in my opinion about some janitor who has plot armor and convenience and his “philosophical enlightenment/crisis.” Despite having questionable coping mechanisms with life, such as initially using a anime games to distract himself before using a protractor as a knife for cutting oneself, AverageAsian217 was inspired by these weebs and started writing stories filled with lore, philosophy, and way too many references to a certain game. So if you’ve run out of stories to read, then read AverageAsian217’s stories, meaning either you’ve read all the other stories or you’ve just wasted your time reading this two thousand word April Fools joke instead of the countless other stories that are most definitely better than this.
A/N: And so with that, I wanna thank the community for everything it has done for me. Despite writing this at night from 22:00 till past 00:00 and the fact this may seem like a shorter version of RagUl’s fic (which I do wanna apologize for as I recognize this could be seen as a copy and will take it down if he doesn't like it up), I could not pass up the chance to make a Max0r joke on April Fools Day. And everything I said in here is a joke. Do not take it seriously. I do not want RagUl to ping me that everyone is pinging him because of me.
Nevertheless, I relished the memories I’ve made with this community along the way and the laughs I’ve had. And so I hope this made y’all laugh, and I hope to catch you all around in my next window of opportunity.
And so with that, in the words of Admiral Fluffy, till next time, fair winds and smooth sailing!
