Work Text:
A few nights after the baptism, when most of them were asleep, Lottie took her things closer to the part of the cabin where Laura Lee slept most nights.
Laura had been sleeping before, but when Lottie lay down she found the blue eyes of the girl beside her looking at her.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you up?" Lottie asked.
“Yes, but that's okay.”
"Do you mind if I stay here too?"
"Not at all."
"Thanks. I don't want to be alone tonight. I've been having nightmares. I think maybe sleeping closer to someone might help me.”
"Makes sense. What were your dreams about?"
“The things I saw when I was in the water. Fire and Light.”
And you , Lottie mentally adds, but doesn't say it out loud.
Laura Lee brings her hand up to Lottie's face, caressing her cheek. Her fingers feel delicate and soft against her face.
“I can't even imagine how hard it must be for you, when I was younger I dreamed of being touched by something divine, but now I know this must be a big burden to carry. I wish I could help you.”
"You are helping. If it weren't for you I would feel so lost.”
And crazy and lonely.
How good in many ways she felt before the plane went down. Almost her entire life.
“I really wish I had become your friend before all this.” Lottie confessed.
"Me too. But better late than never right? We have time.”
Lottie hoped that would be the case, but it was hard to believe that Laura and that thing that was growing between them could be something she would be able to keep.
That night she did not dream of fire and light. Only of Laura Lee.
