Work Text:
The first time Linhardt had fallen asleep on you was way back in the early academy days. Professor Byleth had assigned you two as partners for a project. It was kind of an odd assignment by monastery standards, but Byleth had insisted it would be good for their students. The assignment was that each pair of students had to write essays describing their partner, things of interest, and other notes. It was a way for Byleth to learn more about their students, from the perspective of their students, and possibly note strengths and weaknesses. You and Linhardt had just happened to be assigned to each other.
“I think we should find a shady tree to sit under as we do our interviews.” Linhardt had suggested, half hoping he could find one shady enough to nap under later.
“It is a nice day out today, so I don’t see why not!” You exclaimed, following him to the courtyard to find the ideal spot to work on their project.
“Here will be sufficient, let’s get this over with shall we?” He asks, taking a seat at the base of the tree. You nod and take a seat next to him, already pulling out your parchment and quill to begin writing notes.
“Where would you like to-” You felt something land on your shoulder, “begin…. Uh Linhardt?” His head was resting on your shoulder, his eyes closed and already asleep. You had quickly scrawled the words ‘tires easily’ on your parchment before deciding on just letting him continue to use you as a pillow.
The second time was after a mission. The two of you were dirty, covered in blood, sweat, and grim. It was still early monastery days and the two of you weren’t quite used to the idea of literally killing enemies, in fact it was taking harsher of a toll on Linhardt than he would let anyone believe.
“Y/N, I require your assistance.” He had said, a strange look in his eyes. You had nodded and followed the greenette, slightly wishing you could’ve cleaned up at least a little bit before being dragged off elsewhere.
Elsewhere ended up being his room that he had promptly pushed you inside of and shut the door behind the two of you. Linhardt was borderline frantic as he rushed to his dresser drawer and pulled nightwear out.
“Here, get changed and cleaned up.” And shoved the clothes into your hands before turning his back to you and pulling his own pair of clothes out.
“Linhardt, I-“
“Please, just get changed and get the blood off of you.” He begged, and Linhardt wasn’t one to beg so easily. You sighed and complied, quickly changing into the clothes provided for you.
“Do you have anything to wipe myself down with?” You asked, desperately wanting to wash the parts of skin that were exposed in battle.
“There’s a bucket of water and a rag in the corner of the room.” He explained, you nodded and went to the wash Bucket to clean up a bit.
By the time you were done, Linhardt was already changed in his nightwear and magically cleaned up and pacing the room.
“I’m done, was there something you needed?” You asked, Linhardt didn’t say anything, just grabbed your wrist and dragged you and himself on his bed. He was quick to rearrange the two of you so his head resting on your chest.
“I just wanted a nice place to nap.” He mumbled before promptly falling asleep in true Linhardt fashion. You rolled your eyes with almost fondness before pulling him closer to you and resting your chin on his head. If he was going to sleep, you were going to as well.
The third most notable time wasn’t actually the third time Linhardt had fallen asleep on you. Far from it in fact. But this time was special.
“Y/N, I must speak to you about something of urgence. Come with me.” The green haired man had said quickly, before grabbing ahold of your hand (interlaced fingers and all) and dragging you off somewhere.
It wasn’t long until you found yourself at the tree where it all began, now a few months older, and Linhardt and your friendship stronger.
“Did you really have to drag me all the way here? This is our nap spot….” You point out.
“Precisely, it's the place where we solidified our friendship… and the place where our relationship will change.” he responded, “How it will change, I’m not sure yet…” He added on, albeit his tone sounded distant and he had yet to make any eye contact.
“Changes…? Relationship…? Linhardt whatever do you mean?” You asked, a bit frustrated with the greenete in front of you.
“Y/N…I wish for you to always be my napping buddy. In fact, I don't nap quite as well as I do when I am with you.” He states matter of factly, a slight blushing across his face.
“Lin… are you asking my hand in courtship?”
“If those are the words it takes for you to understand my feelings, then yes, I am asking to court you.” He smiles lightly, holding a hand out for you to grab. You blushed a bit yourself before grabbing his hand and nodding. Linhardt smiles brightly before dragging you down with him to lay under the tree. It was only a matter of sdeconds before Linhardt cuddled up into your chest and promptly fell asleep. You smiled down and laughed at the green hair man in your arms and pull him closer.
You could get used to this.
By the fourth most notable time you had, in fact, gotten used to the sleepy greenets ways. Between sleepy good morning and good night kisses, to him sneaking into your room for the night, you were used to it all. You were even used to him coming in for a cuddle session while he read during lazy afternoons, granted those were rare.
“What are you reading this time, Lin?” You asked the man who was cuddled into your side as the two of you laid in your bed.
“Just some book on crest I’ve been rereading… seeing if there's anything I have happened to miss.” He responds with a yawn. You nod and begin to play with his hair. It was just so soft and shiny and incredibly hard to resist touching.
“Hmm… that feels good. Don’t stop.” Linhardt all but literally melted in your hands as you scratched his head, his silky hair tangling under your fingers. You’ll have to help him brush those out as an apology later. You continue on for a bit longer until you felt his head relax and heard him begin to softly snore. You shake your head at your boyfriend with a fond smile.
You untangle your fingers from his hair and take his long forgotten book from his lap and marked his place before shutting it and safely putting it on your bedside table. You would let him nap for the time being.
The fifth most notable time was five years later, the war had ended, at least for the time being. It was a brief moment of peace, and goddess be damned, Linhardt wanted to take the time to relax.
He had brought you to the tree that started it all, and the two of you were laying underneath its shade, basking in each others presence.
“You know, Y/N…” He starts, turning on his side to look at you, “We should get hitched. Like tomorrow. No grand party, nothing big, just us.” He had said. Truth be told, you were thinking of marriage yourself, especially now that the war was over, but the idea of anything big held you back. You were glad that he shared a similar sentiment.
“I agree, lets get married. Just us and a witness…” You trail off thinking of who you would want to witness your marriage. “Edelgard. I want her to be a witness.”
“Caspar is the other witness. Now let's take a nap for now.” He smiled lazily, and pulled you closer to him. He rested his chin on the top of your head, and held you snugly against himself before falling asleep… in true linhardt fashion.
