Work Text:

Matt only wakes up when the door to his and Foggy's apartment swings open. Only three people in the world have a key, but he still reaches down beside his side of the bed to wrap his fingers around an older version of the Daredevil billy clubs.

"Karen?" he calls, recognizing his friend's shampoo and the scent of her favorite vodka staining her clothes and mouth.

"Matt," she replies, her voice slurred. Matt drops the club and gets out of bed quickly, shaking Foggy awake with one hand and grabbing a shirt from the floor with his other. It's Foggy's, and it's already been worn, but the scent is calming to Matt, unlike most others.

He pulls on a pair of sweats and hurries out into the living room, where Karen has already curled up on the middle of their couch.

"Karen," he says and sinks down to sit beside her. "What's wrong?"

She turns into him immediately, pressing her face into his shoulder. It's become normal, casual affection between them. With Matt and Foggy living together, sleeping together- with whatever it is Karen has going on with Marci... It feels easy, and Karen is Matt's best friend in the whole world, besides Foggy. It's nice to hold her, both of them making the other feel a little more okay.

"Karen," Foggy says, still groggy, as he comes out of their bedroom. He comes to the couch too, and, after banging his shin on their living room table, sits on Karen's other side and reaches out to hold her hand.

"Matt, have you ever killed anyone," she whispers. Foggy gets tense, but Matt shakes his head into her hair- clean and lavender smelling.

"No, I haven't," he whispers, "Not on purpose."

"But... Do you think you have?"

Matt is quiet. He makes eye contact with Foggy over Karen's head, and Foggy looks resigned.

"Probably," he breathes. He doesn't look away from Foggy. "I... I don't want to kill anyone. But if I have to go... Further, than I'd like, to save someone, or keep someone safe, someone who deserves it..."

Karen hides her face in his chest and breathes in a shaking sob. It's quiet in the room for a minute, with just Foggy tracing comforting circles on the back of her hand and Matt pressing his cheek into Karen's hair with his arms around her body.

"I had a dream," she admits finally and Matt can tell she's embarrassed. "A nightmare. About Wesley." Her hands shake against Matt's t-shirt and he hugs her tighter.

"It's okay, Karen," he murmurs.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Foggy says, and he's using that voice that Matt loves, so fucking tender and loving. So genuine it hurts.

"Not really," she replies and turns her head to meet Foggy's eyes. "I was just... Fucking dying for a bump, and I figured this was a better call."

Matt can feel her heart jumping, speeding up, the admission hot in her chest. He rubs her shoulder. "I'm glad you came over, Karen. We're always here for you."

"I have a weed pen, if that would help at all," Foggy offers, and Karen snorts.

"Yes, actually," she says and Matt smiles as Foggy goes to grab the pen out of his briefcase. "When'd you get this? I thought you were... I dunno. Very, very sober."

"Less so, after I got with Marci the last time. Calms me down," Foggy calls. he's rooting around for a moment, and Matt takes the time to press his face into Karen's hair, right beside her ear.

"You can always come to us," is all he says, but Karen's smile into his shoulder is enough.

Foggy comes back, slides the pen into her hand, and the three of them sit there, passing the pen back and forth between the three of them, until the sun begins to stream through the windows.
