Summary:

The early 2000's high school AU no one asked for.

Chaeyoung's dealing with heartbreak and ap classes, who's got time for love? Enter the new transfer student, Chou Tzuyu.

Notes:

I know I said I'd have "just for the holidays" done by the end of this week but... this one just happened and I couldn't help myself. I feel so old but I really miss the early 2000's haha.

Feel free to reminisce with me in the comments. Hope you enjoy the story!

Work Text:

Chaeyoung plugged her headphones into her red iPod nano, settling into her chair. It was second period, her free period, and she was in the library hiding. She loved her bro, but she had some homework she actually needed to do. She ran her hand through her short blonde hair, her thumb scrolling around until she found the songs she had just downloaded. Her eyes closed gently as the music poured into her ears.

Closed off from love, I didn’t need the pain

Once or twice was enough and it was all in vain

Time starts to pass, before you know it, you’re frozen, ooh

She let out a soft hum of satisfaction as she started working on her calculus homework. They were only two months into the school year, and she found herself actually enjoying the math assignment she was working on. School had always been a breeze and as Chaeyoung entered her senior year, she was feeling really good about her plans. Penn State for her undergrad in mechanical engineering, followed by law school at UPenn. Then she could leave and finally get away from the girl who-

MY FELLOW AMERICANS I WOULD ONCE AGAIN LIKE TO SAY I DID NOT HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH THAT WOMAN

“FUCK!” Chaeyoung yelled, ripping her earbuds out of her ear. She received a quick “shh” from the librarians and some glares from other students. She pursed her lips in disappointment since she thought she had spent the night downloading “When You’re Gone” by Avril Lavigne.

“I knew it was you!” a hushed voice said from across the library, a girl with dark shoulder-length hair and a bright smile making her way towards a now disgruntled Chaeyoung.

“Hey Dub, how’s it going?” Chaeyoung said, packing up her iPod since she wasn’t ready to risk another incident in the library.

“I’m a little stressed about my test in AP Gov later but otherwise fine. How’s my heartbroken baby doing?” Dahyun asked with a smirk, leaning over to stroke Chaeyoung’s cheek and pinch it. She quickly scowled and pushed Dahyun’s hand away, eliciting a chuckle from the other girl.

“It’s fine, Sana still hasn’t talked to me so I’m kind of bummed,” Chaeyoung replied softly, shoulders slumping forward.

“It’s only been a couple weeks though, maybe she will come around.”

“She won’t even look at me though, that’s what hurts. She was or is my best friend and she won’t even look at me.”

“I know and I’m so sorry, Chae. She doesn’t deserve you after responding like that. If we weren’t such good bros, I’d think about it.”

“Shut up, we would never work and we both know it,” Chaeyoung laughed with a small smile, shoving Dahyun a little.

“There’s a smile. Ok, I have to go, I told Ms. Peachen I would take the new kid around. I’ll see you at lunch?”

“Yeah, have fun being a nerd,” Chaeyoung scoffed, returning to her work.

“First of all, that’s not offensive. Second of all, being a peer mediator is an honor ,” Dahyun said, nose up feigning arrogance before she smiled and walked away.

They had known each other since seventh grade, a loud girl introducing herself to a shy Chaeyoung. They had been best friends since. They had some big plans to go to Penn State together, although Dahyun was thinking of pursuing medicine instead. Either way, they would be together.

Chaeyoung sighed remembering what Dahyun had brought up. A couple of weeks ago, she had told her friend Sana that she had feelings for her. She had been incredibly surprised, telling Chaeyoung she needed some space and time. She had also mentioned feeling like this had been a betrayal, that their whole friendship felt like a lie because of this crush. Chaeyoung frowned thinking about it. She went back to her homework, a place where things made sense. As long as you had the right formula, things always worked out. Math was much simpler than love somehow.

She went through the motions of her classes, and before she knew it, it was lunchtime. She sat down at her usual spot, waiting for Dahyun to come. Her other friends Jihyo and Jeongyeon came first and they started talking about their days.

“I’m a little worried about the calc test,” Jihyo started, taking a bite of her sandwich.

“If you want, we can study together. It’s been fairly easy for me so far,” Chaeyoung offered. Jihyo smiled and nodded.

“Alright, let’s talk about something fun. I watched ‘Disturbia’ again this week, Shia LaBeouf is a GENIUS,” Jeongyeon said as Jihyo made a disgusted face.

“Dude no way,” Chaeyoung responded with the same face. Suddenly, a flushed Dahyun appeared.

“Friends this is Tzuyu, she’s new so be nice to her also don’t get any ideas Chae I have to go and take care of a popcorn emergency love you all bye!” And with that, Dahyun left, leaving four very confused people at a table together. The first thing Chaeyoung noticed was how tall this girl was. The school uniform somehow looked shorter on this girl, tan skin, light brown shoulder-length hair. As her eyes centered on the girl’s face, her breath caught in her throat. Is this what Colbie Caillat was talking about in her song ‘Bubbly’? As quick as the thought appeared, it vanished.

“Did she say popcorn emergency?” Jeongyeon asked.

“What did she mean about me getting ideas,” Chaeyoung wondered with a raised eyebrow.

“Hi Tzuyu, I’m Jihyo and this is Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung. We’re Dahyun’s friends, come sit! Tell us about yourself!”

“Jihyo chill you’re scaring her,” Jeongyeon said, getting a small chuckle from the tall girl.

“It’s ok, as you know I’m Tzuyu. What do you want to know?”

“How did you end up here? Or uh well like where are you from? But not in like a racist way-” Chaeyoung stammered, a blush creeping on her cheeks. Jeongyeon smirked at her.

“I came from my mom but both my parents are from Taiwan. I’m from New Jersey though, but my mom got a new job so that’s why we moved here,” Tzuyu said without missing a beat.

“What are your hopes and dreams?” “What’s your favorite cereal?” Jihyo and Jeongyeon asked at the exact same time.

“Well, I’m going to be an accountant because they make good money and I’m good at math. And I like lucky charms,” Tzuyu responded chuckling. “Although, it’s not really fair you’re asking me all these questions. Tell me about yourselves.”

“I’m Jihyo, I’m captain of the debate team and I’m going to go study psychology at UPenn. My favorite cereal is honey bunches of oats, and my favorite movie right now is ‘Music and Lyrics.’”

“Most people call me Jeongyeon but you can call me yours if you want. I’m on the jv soccer team and my parents want me to go to med school but I kind of want to open a bakery? Maybe it’s a little crazy, I don’t know. My favorite cereal is cinnamon toast crunch and I like to tease Chaeyoung in my spare time.”

The whole group started laughing after hearing Jeongyeon’s corny line and Tzuyu was blushing a little.

“Bro why are you so obsessed with me,” Chaeyoung said, throwing a soft punch to Jeongyeon’s shoulder, earning her a hair tousle.

“Just go,” Jihyo interjected, trying to stop this before it became an actual problem.

“I’m Chaeyoung, I’ll probably go to law school eventually but I like art a lot. My favorite cereal is frosted flakes and I don’t know why I’m friends with these fools.”

“You love us, don’t lie,” Jihyo said nonchalantly. Jeongyeon nodded vigorously.

“You all seem very nice, so I hope we can be friends,” Tzuyu said softly. The rest of the girls smiled back, and it seemed their group had a new member.

“Here, let’s exchange screen names. We all get on at around 8 so feel free to join!” Jihyo said excitedly, scribbling all their handles onto a piece of paper in her notebook.

--

Chaeyoung had dinner with her family and breezed through her homework since she was looking forward to tonight’s talking session with her friends. Mostly because her cellphone was out of minutes and her mom was calling some auntie and yelling about life.

The familiar sidebar popped up and she saw that her friends were online. She went to add in Tzuyu’s screen name when a message box popped up.

Chaeyoung leaned back in her chair, thinking about what her friends were saying. Perhaps it was time to move on. She would sleep on it.

--

Christmas break had started and Chaeyoung was relieved to finally be done with her midterms. The AP Lang midterm had definitely kicked her ass but at least she had done ok on her calculus exam. Her family had planned to stay in town this year, opting for a more traditional holiday so they could take a bigger trip in the summer before Chaeyoung left for college.

Since she had already submitted her college applications and finished her homework, there wasn’t much left for her to do. Turning on the tv, she lazily flipped through the channels. Chaeyoung stopped briefly when she heard Vanessa Hudgen’s iconic lines in “Gotta Go My Own Way” filter through the tv speakers. The original “High School Musical” was great, but the second one was definitely the better one. Jeongyeon disagreed, but Chaeyoung knew this was just objectively true.

She signed on to AIM to see what her friends were up to. Jeongyeon and Jihyo’s families had both decided to go to a cabin in the Poconos for the break, so they were without internet access for at least the next couple of days. Chaeyoung’s mouse hovered over Dahyun’s screen name to read her away message.

Hey there, Delilah

What's it like in New York city?

I'm a thousand miles away

But, girl, tonight you look so pretty

Classic Dahyun. She was about to sign off when she heard a ding, indicating someone had messaged her.

xxangeltzu90xx: hey chae ^_^

ttalgichaeee: oh hey tzu whats up

xxangeltzu90xx: not much j chillin with my dogs

ttalgichaeee: i still need to meet them

xxangeltzu90xx: are you going anywhere over break? you could come over some time im just hanging out at home

ttalgichaeee: me too are you home now

xxangeltzu90xx: yeah

ttalgichaeee: ok be there in 10

xxangeltzu90xx: oh ok yeah see you

Chaeyoung told her parents where she was headed and got in the car. Tzuyu had been an easy addition to the group, it almost felt like she had always been there. Chaeyoung figured it was because of the tall girl’s easy-going nature that was complimented by a biting sense of humor. She hadn’t let Jeongyeon breathe after her flirting, which everyone enjoyed. She even ended up being in some of the same classes, so they would all sit around and do homework together. And if she was being honest, she did like hanging out with Tzuyu. They had hung out one on one a couple of times, and it had always been relaxing, talking about music and movies at Chaeyoung’s house but she has never been invited over.

She pulled into the visitor space and ran to the door, knocking quickly. Tzuyu opened the door with a smile, one blonde dog in her arms and a darker dog at her feet.

“Oh noooo they’re too cute,” Chaeyoung whined as she crouched down to pet the dog with the black fur.

“That’s Kaya. The one I’m holding is Butter,” Tzuyu said smiling, gesturing for the shorter girl to come inside. Both dogs were already having a great time jumping around Chaeyoung, which she enjoyed.

They walked up the stairs to Tzuyu’s room, Chaeyoung trailing behind with both dogs in her arms. Tzuyu’s room was simple, a full-size bed in the middle of the wall, a bookshelf, a desk. The walls were bare besides some pictures of her friends from New Jersey and some photo booth strips from their most recent mall trip.

“Oh, I burned a new CD, do you want to hear it?” Tzuyu asked excitedly. This was their thing, sharing music with each other and talking about what the songs meant to them. Chaeyoung nodded excitedly as she watched the other girl walk over to her boombox and place the cd in. They both sat on the bed, the dogs deciding to sniff around downstairs instead. “Smile” by Uncle Kracker came on and Chaeyoung smiled.

“I love this song! Cooler than the flip side of my pillow, that’s right,” Chaeyoung laughed as she sang along.

“This song makes me really happy. It just feels good!” Tzuyu said.

“Imagine if a girl liked you this much,” Chaeyoung sighed, leaning back and looking at the ceiling.

“There are lots of girls out there, I’m sure someone will.”

“Sigh, maybe.”

“Are you still sad about Sana?” Tzuyu asked, deciding to just lay down with her legs hanging off the edge.

“Yeah... sometimes I wish I’d never told her if I’m being honest,” Chaeyoung said closing her eyes. It had been several months now, but it hadn’t really gotten easier for her.

“Really?” Tzuyu turned her head to face the girl. Chaeyoung propped her head on her elbow and scrunched her nose.

“I think so. Then maybe we would still be friends and I wouldn’t have this ache in my chest. I can’t stop listening to sad songs.”

“If I remember right, Dahyun said you already listened to sad music before this.”

“Right but I was a child then, Nickelback means something now.” Tzuyu laughed after hearing this, and Chaeyoung smiled at the sound, laying down on her back.

“I’m sorry you’re still sad about it. You’ve never really told me about it before, but now that we are closer you can if you want.”

“Oh really? I just assumed you knew now, that’s how well you fit in.”

“I’m glad I met you guys, really,” Tzuyu giggled, blushing a little.

“Where to start. We’ve been friends since 7th grade math class. Sana was so nice to me so it all really started as friendship. We’d hang out outside of school and we even did softball together-”

“Wait that’s like the gayest sport and you did it together?” Tzuyu asked, sitting up and looking down on Chaeyoung.

“...she did it first and I started playing to hang out with her.”

“You’re joking.”

“I knoooow it’s stupid and maybe I was falling for her the whole time but I didn’t know!”

“You’re so clueless, Chae,” Tzuyu finally stopped laughing and went back to laying on the bed.

“Yeah, probably. Either way I’ve just been sitting on this crush for so long. I think I realized what it was sophomore year and I pulled back a little. Like you know how you wake up in the morning and boom she’s there, and right before bed I’m thinking about her. And if I don’t get to talk to her that day or she doesn’t text me, it’s devastating. That’s where I was at.”

“You must’ve really liked her.”

“I think so. And sure, it hurt when she rejected me and said she was straight-”

“She said she was straight? There’s no way.”

“That’s what I was thinking! I didn’t say it to her but we are totally right on this. Anyways, that all hurt, but what was worse was that she didn’t want to be friends with me anymore. Like not even taking space or something, she just cut me off.”

“Have you heard from her since?”

“No,” Chaeyoung said solemnly. At this point she was nervously playing with the rings on her fingers. Neither of them were facing each other at this point, but a comfortable silence had fallen between them.

“If you could say anything to her right now, what would you say?” Tzuyu asked, turning to face Chaeyoung.

“I’d tell her I was sorry for falling in love with her. I don’t regret it, but I regret hurting our relationship the way it did,” Chaeyoung said softly, eyes still pointed towards the ceiling. This was the truth. She definitely wasn’t as torn up about it as she had been before, but she still had scars.

“I hope you never regret falling in love with anyone, Chae. You deserve better than that.”

“It hurts less most days, but it’s hard to believe I put my heart out there and got hurt like that,” Chaeyoung smiled bitterly.

“Do you think you’ll ever fall in love again?”

“I hope so. I don’t want to hurt forever but maybe if I find a girl that I get along with it’ll work out,” Chaeyoung shrugged.

“What about us?” Tzuyu said quietly.

“What about us?” Chaeyoung responded, not understanding the question.

“Oh uh nevermind,” Tzuyu said. She stood up quickly and went back over to the boombox to change out the cd. Weird, the song hasn’t ended Chaeyoung thought to herself as she sat up.

“Make me a copy of that CD? I really liked it,” Chaeyoung said, not noticing the change in the room.

“Yeah, sure,” Tzuyu shrugged, sitting down on the floor now.

“Hmm, I should probably get going. My parents want to watch a movie,” Chaeyoung said, sliding off the bed and collecting her keys and wallet from where she had thrown them down on the desk. She noticed a printed photo that Dahyun had taken of Chaeyoung carrying Tzuyu on her back, smiles big. They had been walking around during one of their free periods, and Jeongyeon had suggested a piggyback race. They were all surprised when Chaeyoung insisted that Tzuyu get on her back rather than the other way around. Unfortunately, they were no match for Jihyo and Jeongyeon.

Tzuyu got up and walked Chaeyoung down the stairs.

“I’ll talk to you later?” Chaeyoung asked as she was halfway out the door.

“Yeah,” Tzuyu said, waving gently until the door closed.

Chaeyoung got into the car and turned on the radio. There was an odd comfort in hearing your favorite song on the radio, as if the world agrees that what you’re listening to is good. As she started driving, she started wondering why Tzuyu was being kind of weird. Her mind bounced around between what movie to watch with her parents, what she wanted to eat, and then back to Tzuyu.

You're better than the best

I'm lucky just to linger in your light

Cooler than the flip-side of my pillow (that's right)

Chaeyoung smiled when this song came on the radio. She thought about how much Tzuyu loved this song, burning this on a cd and showing it to her. She also thought about how much Tzuyu had smiled tonight, and how her laugh had made her heart beat a little extra. Also how cute she looked in her pajamas and her hair up in a ponytail. She was still confused on why Tzuyu had been a little colder after their conversation. Maybe she had shared too much about what happened with Sana and it had made her sad? What was the last thing she remembered saying before things got weird-

Oh shit.

She (safely) turned the car around and started heading back to Tzuyu’s place. She watched as the streetlights quickly drove past her, hoping the other girl hadn’t gone to bed already. She ran back up to the familiar door and knocked, hoping Tzuyu would answer. Unfortunately, her mom opened the door.

“Oh, hi Chaeyoung. Did you leave something?” Mrs. Chou asked.

“Uh, yes. It’s in Tzuyu’s room, do you mind if I run upstairs and get it?” Chaeyoung asked, throwing her shoes off and halfway up the stairs before the older woman could even respond. When she got in there, Tzuyu was sitting at her desk burning a CD. Her eyes were confused when Chaeyoung walked in.

“What are you doing here, Chae?” Tzuyu was genuinely asking, eyes locked on the girl standing in her doorway. She didn’t look upset, she just looked confused.

“What did you mean, ‘what about us’?” Chaeyoung said, stepping closer to the girl. Tzuyu blushed a little and looked down, smiling to herself.

“I thought you didn’t catch that...” Tzuyu trailed off.

“Right I heard you but what did you mean?” Chaeyoung’s wheels were turning in her mind and her heart was pounding. She hadn’t realized but her hands were sweating a little and she wasn’t entirely sure why.

“Um well I just thought that, I don’t know, I mean I like you, Chae. And I’m not really sure if you like me back but I was wondering if there could be an us, you know? But also it sounds like you’re not really over she who must not be named and that’s ok and even if you don’t like me back that’s also ok-”

Chaeyoung had been stepping closer and closer to Tzuyu this whole time, which is why the girl was speaking frantically and stumbling on her words. The distance between them was shrinking, and so was the amount of air in Chaeyoung’s lungs. She tried to calm her breathing but it seemed to be a lost cause.

With Tzuyu still sitting in the chair and Chaeyoung standing in front of her, this was one of the few moments where Chaeyoung found herself looking down on the other girl. Her hand started moving on its own, shakily tucking a strand of hair behind Tzuyu’s ear. Her fingers lingered and slowly traced her jawline.

“I haven’t done this before,” Chaeyoung whispered softly, eyes glued to Tzuyu, fingers softly doodling on her cheek.

“That’s ok,” Tzuyu said, nervously smiling.

Chaeyoung’s mind was racing, wondering if this was the right thing to do, not sure if Tzuyu liked her still, what if she wasn’t ready. That is, until she felt Tzuyu’s arms wrap around her waist, pulling her closer. Now or never, then.

She tilted Tzuyu’s face up and brought her lips down. She closed her eyes and made very gentle contact, feeling good about it until she pulled back and Tzuyu was laughing.

“You went through all that to kiss my nose?” Tzuyu asked, tears in her eyes from laughing.

Chaeyoung was really blushing hard now. This isn’t how she imagined her first kiss going.

“Oh my god I’m so sorry. I wasn’t aiming for your nose, no one ever walks you through this part. Like you kiss and you close your eyes and somehow you're supposed to know where everything is?” Chaeyoung said, hand scratching her head in embarrassment and taking a step back. Tzuyu stood up and booped the other girl’s nose.

“You really had no idea I liked you, did you?” Tzuyu teased, closing the space between them. Chaeyoung gave a nervous smile, noticing the movement.

“You’re always so cute with your music, bickering with Jeongyeon. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to be with you,” Tzuyu said softly, placing her arms around Chaeyoung’s shoulders.

Chaeyoung’s mouth went dry as she took in her proximity to Tzuyu. She could smell the sweet pea scent coming off the other girl’s body. She would definitely need to get on her tiptoes to close the gap.

“I’m not going to lie, I was a little hurt when you didn’t respond the way I thought you would,” Tzuyu said, sadness evident in her voice. Chaeyoung felt bad knowing this was her fault, but she genuinely had no idea.

“Sorry Tzu, I really had no idea this whole time.”

“I know. But how do you feel about me now?” Chaeyoung looked up at Tzuyu, tension slowly building as they continued. Had she been so blinded by her heartbreak that she had missed what was in front of her all along?

“I think I like you more than I know and I’d like to give us a chance. I’ve just been so in my head about everything, I didn’t notice how supportive you’ve been this whole time. You’re always listening, attentive, responsive, it’s great. And I’m looking at you now and god you’re so beautiful like are you sure you like me,” Chaeyoung rambled, looking down, hands now picking at her nails.

“Hey. You’re incredibly cute. And I know what you’ve been going through so it makes sense. I didn’t mean to put pressure on, I was just wondering if you had thought about it at all,” Tzuyu said reassuringly, hands starting to run through the shorter girl’s hair.

Chaeyoung didn’t know how she had ended up here. The prettiest girl she had ever met had a crush on HER and she hadn’t even noticed. She felt really dumb, but also incredibly shy because never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined this situation. She heard Tzuyu clear her throat and she came back to the present where her arms were around the girl’s waist and the girl had her arms around her neck.

She decided it was time. She gathered all the courage in her body and pulled the other girl closer, moving towards Tzuyu’s lips. When they finally connected, it wasn’t quite what Chaeyoung had imagined. She had imagined fireworks behind her eyes and a warmth all over her chest and her stomach doing flips. All she could think about was how soft Tzuyu’s lips were, how gentle her hands felt in her hair, smell invading her senses, and somehow during all of this “Just the Girl” by The Click Five was echoing in her mind.

When they finally broke apart Chaeyoung couldn’t help but grin ear to ear. Tzuyu was smiling too, smoothing out Chaeyoung’s hair where she had clearly messed it up.

“So, I’ll um message you?” Chaeyoung asked with a blush across her face, moving towards the door.

“I’ll be waiting,” Tzuyu said grinning. Just as Chaeyoung was about to close the door, she heard Tzuyu call out to her. When she turned around, she was greeted by a CD.

“I burned this for you. Originally I was going to give it to you to confess my feelings but this works a little better in my opinion.”

Chaeyoung smiled, taking the CD in her hands and going up on her toes to give the girl a kiss on the cheek. She walked back down the stairs and back to her car.

“YES!! YES YES YES YES YES!!” Chaeyoung yelled in the car, feeling like she could take over the world. Her heart, although not fully mended, was starting to feel whole again, something she hadn’t felt in a while. She carefully removed Tzuyu’s CD, which simply read “For Chae <3” in rainbow sharpie, and put it in the car’s CD player. She could see that there was a tracklist written in neat gel pen on the back, but she decided to let the music surprise her, just like one tall new girl from New Jersey had tonight.
