Work Text:
You heave a sigh while stretching your arms behind your head, pushing open the front door to your apartment.
After a long day at work, you wanted nothing more than to strip yourself of your uniform, plop down onto the couch, and binge whatever show you could find on Hulu with your boyfriend Seonghwa.
You lazily dump your stuff by the door, telling yourself you'd put it all away later knowing full well that your bag wouldn't move from its spot till you needed it the next day.
Stepping into the living room you look around confused, not seeing Seonghwa nestled in his favorite spot in front of the tv where he usually waited for you to come home.
Recently, the man had taken up a new hobby which kept him in that spot for long.
~knitting~
You thought it was cute he had taken up such a "grandma" hobby, making you scunkly little sweaters that you definitely could've never fitted into unless you were a baby. He'd always smile wide in response when you'd say that, raising an eyebrow and poking your side in a teasing manner.
It was only when the faint sound of blithe humming reached your ears did you realize he was occupied with something in the kitchen.
"How's my favorite malewife?" you jokingly greeted, leaning against the counter beside him.
He laughed in response, placing a quick kiss on your temple before going back to whatever it was he was doing. "So,,, you know how it's Ddeonghwa's birthday today?"
Ddeonghwa: your beloved fur child that you adopted almost a year and a half ago; just a few weeks before you started dating Seonghwa.
The name, while cute, served as a constant reminder of your embarrassment when your best friend blurted it out in front of your then-friend-Seonghwa. It was one of his nicknames and while stuck on what to name your new tabby cat, it was the first thing to come to your lovesick brain. Good thing it did, though, or else you'd be minus one boyfriend right now.
"Yeah, how could I forget? I brought him a few new toys after work." you nodded in the general direction of the door.
"Right, so I thought 'why not make him a cake?'" he boldly gestured to the concoction on the counter, "now I'm making him a cake!"
"Out of tuna and cheese?"
He nodded with an enthusiastic smile in response.
You stared at him for a few seconds before chuckling, wrapping your arms around one of his own, and snuggling into his side. "Okay, how can I help, Chef?"
Almost twenty minutes later and your little catcakes are out of the oven and cooled, ready for the judgment of the birthday boy.
Seonghwa excitedly brings them to the living room after scooching over the rug and coffee table to make space on the floor for the small serving dish.
He disappeared for a second coming back with both your cat and some sort of paper with little drawings on it. It was only when he sat down with Ddeonghwa in between his legs did you realize what it was.
Seonghwa had spent god knows how long cutting and coloring paper to resemble a mini little birthday hat, complete with a pastel pink ribbon for the string.
"Look what I made~" he presented it proudly to you as you took a seat beside him.
You laughed lightly as you leaned in, one hand giving little scratches behind Ddeonghwa's ear while the other gently held the makeshift hat to get a better view of it. It read "Ddeonghwa Birth" with a large 2 under it and differently colored squiggles.
"This is cute but how do you plan to get it on him?" you playfully smirked, already imagining the fur child running as soon as the hat touched his head.
"With my incredible charm, intellect, and ever-growing love for him."
You rolled your eyes at him, handing the hat back over and gesturing for him to try his luck.
"Hi, baby~ It's your birthday so I made you a hat. Wear it nicely to prove me right, okay? Ahaha." Seonghwa forced a laugh as he warily tied the ribbon into a pretty knot.
A few oddly tense seconds go by almost in slow motion as the three of you sit unmoving.
"See? He's wearing i-"
As if on cue, Ddeonghwa starts to shake his head, effectively ridding himself of the foreign object tied to him. He begins chewing on it and playing with the ribbon.
"Seems like you got him a new toy too." you teased.
Seonghwa pouted as he stared down at his former masterpiece. "That took me thirty minutes to make…"
Your hand found its way to his hair, running your fingers through to comfort him. "Don't worry, babe. There's still the cake — he'll love that for sure."
"Ah, right!" Seonghwa clapped as he remembered the cake, accidentally startling the cat purring in his lap. Gently picking up Ddeonghwa, he placed him in front of the plate. "Here, yummy cake, eat it….. Please I beg-"
Ddeonghwa sits on his hind legs before bending down to sniff the food in front of him. You look over at Seonghwa who watched with fists balled in anticipation.
It doesn't take long before Ddeonghwa starts to take bites out of the cake, small nibbles at first before deciding that he enjoyed it. He grabs the cake in his mouth and runs off to who knows where.
"W-what does that mean-"
"I think that means you succeeded."
Seonghwa sighs in content while leaning back until he was lying on the floor. He motioned for you to come over, giving you one of his arms to rest your head on.
Putting his free hand on your waist, he pulled you closer, silently staring into your eyes.
You stared back with an easy smile, giggling as you ask, "What?"
"Nothing new, I just love you."
You faked a frown at his cheesy line, "Yeah, yeah. I love you too, Hwa."
Just as you lean up to give your boyfriend a kiss, brown flashes between you which causes Seonghwa to jump in surprise.
Your favorite tabby now laid between the two of you, unknowingly ruining your moment as he happily groomed himself with a full tummy.
God, did you love your little family.
