Chapter Text
“Let’s get this straight. You want me to arrest a force of nature?”
Monoma, department head of police, pinched his brow firmly and hunched even further over his paper-filled desk. He sighed impatiently. “ No . Shinso, Uravity. You know, the biggest crime syndicate leader this side of Japan?”
When Shinso looked unfazed, Monoma blanched. “Were you not the department’s biggest expert on catching yakuza? How have you not heard of this girl?”
“Too busy giving out parking tickets, that’s how,” Shinso replied drily.
Monoma’s mouth narrowed down to a little “o.” He’d neglected to remember how he had personally banished his friend to the meter maid stations a couple of months ago for arresting the former head of the department on the grounds of conspiracy against the mayor. Shinso’s hunch had been right, but, as Monoma was promoted as the new department head, he had had to deal with the weeks of bad publicity that followed.
He waved off Shinso’s remark. “You’re out of that job now. I need you on this case, Shinso. This girl, she surrounds her enemies, makes them do exactly what she wants, steals all sorts of money and assets from the banks, and then disappears like smoke. In the aftermath of every gig she’s pulled, we can’t find one record of her communication with the perpetrators! Not one! And when we tried to get an informant, no dice! The entire syndicate that she built in the span of two months, and not one of her lackeys are willing to betray her. Ha! And why?” Monoma paused dramatically, as was his way. He leaned forward in his seat and Shinso wrinkled his nose at his coffee breath. “Because they’re all in love with her. I’d marry her myself--Ack!”
Monoma collapsed over his desk, and above his spread out form was Kendo. Head of Ballistics. And Monoma’s fiancé.
She smiled pleasantly at him as she dragged Monoma out of his chair and leaned him against the water tank. “Hey Shinso! Our sexiest meter maid! Long time no see. How’s it feel to be with the big boys again?”
Shinso smirked. “A pleasure as always, Kendo. I see you’re still reigning in Monoma from time to time.”
“Hah, yeah. It’s worth it though. Sometimes I think he has a fetish for that kind of stuff…” She blushed slightly and twisted the ring around her finger, then snapped back to reality. “Look, we do need you on the case. The department’s been getting a lot of flack for the former head’s arrest, and something like incarcerating the Uravity would really boost public morale around the police.”
“What do you have on this girl?”
Kendo hummed, searching around in Monoma’s files to find a thin one marked in bright red all caps, “URAVITY.” She shrugged and handed it to him. “As you can see, not much. The names of a few inaccessible Swiss bank accounts, a list of the places she’s hit. A photo of her at the planetarium.”
He raised an eyebrow. “An astronomy buff?”
“Beats me. It’s in the name, I guess? We never saw her anywhere else except for that one time, so…”
The figure in the picture was female, from the shadow of her build; otherwise he couldn’t find a single physical attribute in the darkness of the photo.
Kendo continued, “All the investigators have a little crush on her, as Monoma so kindly demonstrated. I think it’s the mystery factor.”
“Eh.” He’d encountered these types of syndicate divas before, taking greater care of their public image than their crime strategies themselves. As a result, it was easier to take them down.
“It gets better, though. Every single time we document a job, we hear of some hospital or union receiving the exact sum the banks lost.”
“Stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor,” he murmured. “So she’s some kind of twisted philanthropist?”
“Exactly! Even stranger, after the robberies, we never see a single person hurt. Not even a blubbering teller! It’s like they forgot she was even there.” Kendo looked at Shinso determinedly. “That’s why we need you. You know you’re a legend. You outstealth the stealthers!”
He smiled. “You flatterer.”
“Oh, good, I massaged your ego enough. So you’ll do it?”
“Fine by me.”
Monoma stirred from his unconsciousness and woke up. He looked up at Kendo. “He’ll do it?”
She gave him a hand up. “Yep, he’ll do it.”
Monoma wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her against him. “You know I’m a sucker for persuasive women, babe.”
Kendo giggled (something very rare for her to do when it didn’t concern Monoma), and it was at this time that Shinso crept out of the office before he had to hear the inevitable suckface sounds. From the looks of it, he would wrap up this case soon, no problem. It was only a matter of time before some real evidence surfaced and he’d be able to hunt this Uravity girl down.
