Work Text:
Dark Rimuri was spawned from Zero Two during the invasion of Ripple Star, and while their closest siblings, Rimuru, Rimura, and Rimuro pursued Ribbon to Popstar, they went to the surface of Ripple Star straight away. There, they possessed a little fairy girl, named Crissa, and then followed their siblings a bit further behind. They were tasked with hiding the fragments of the Crystal after it was shattered.
Over the time spent planet-hopping with Crissa, going through her memories of happiness and love, the orb grew fond of the little girl. They became gentle with her, keeping her out of harm's way as best they could, even leaving her at times to defeat a persistent foe. They always returned shortly after, checking her for wounds first. They never told her about their newfound error, compassion, no matter how many times they've displayed it.
During the time she spent resting, they forged their own form of personality based on her memories and emotions. And they've also began to question the will of their creator, whether or not they were doing the right thing, if they were ever only a tool, what would happen after Lord Zero had gotten what they wanted. All of the big questions a tiny orb was never meant to ponder on.
Soon after their arrival on Aqua Star, Crissa saw her chance to stop the monster twisting her mind to their will. And she took it, before Rimuri could do anything to stop it.
Defeated, and devastated, Dark Rimuri began their return to Zero Two, their task incomplete. However, they arrived just as Ripple Star was purged of the evil controlling the minds of its people, and Zero Two was slain, their heir fleeing to Shiver Star. It took every bit of Rimuri's newfound personality not to succumb to the death of their parent, returning to care for the heir with the other caretakers, and so, they survived.
However, they were kept on Shiver Star by their new Master for many following years, and from their colossal failures, sparked a new kind of zeal unmatched by the other Dark Matter. They became inquisitive and perseverant, and the new Zero learned to use this to their advantage.
And so, the orb was sent to Planet Popstar with a new directive, a shiny golden eyepiece, a burgundy fedora, and a bag full of papers and pencils to go house-to-house asking the same questions.
"Greetings! Is it possible for me to take some time from this lovely day to ask questions? What are your thoughts on our Lord, Zero? Is it possible for you to fill a survey of mine? Please answer honestly!"
