Hymn to the Seven

Summary:

In the books, we see some verses of a "Hymn to the Seven" that seem themed around each of the Seven. I wrote a full set of 14 verses here. (Has this been done before...?)

Notes:

I am currently archiving to AO3 a bunch of works I made back during one of my fannish periods that occurred from 2008-2011. I apologize for the spam.

This was a collaboration of sorts -- someone else on the team I was in had made a set of prayer beads for the Faith of the Seven and was looking for someone to complete the verses of the Hymn to the Seven, so I wrote my take on them. Some of the verses are lifted directly from the books (just the Mother verses, I believe?); the rest I wrote, matching the meter and general vibe.

Work Text:

O great Father, lord of justice
May our sons not walk astray
Judge us all and judge us fairly
Give us all this rightful day

O great Father, eye of wisdom
Keep our daughters safe we pray
Keep the laws and keep the order
Grant to us your lawful way

Gentle Mother, font of mercy
Save our sons from war, we pray
Stay the swords and stay the arrows
Let them know a better day

Gentle Mother, strength of women,
help our daughters through this fray,
soothe the wrath and tame the fury,
Teach us all a kinder way

Valiant Warrior, shield of heroes
Give our sons the strength to fight
Bring them safely home from battle
May foes fall before your might

Valiant Warrior, sword of courage
Watch our daughters through the night
Guard the weak and help the helpless
Lead us down the path to light

Wizened Crone, sage of women
Guide us in our lives we pray
Share with us your boundless vision
What has happened, what yet may

Wizened Crone, lamp of wisdom
Find us when we go astray
When we wander, lost, uncertain
Let us know the truest way

Skillful Smith, O tireless hammer
Teach our sons your craft and trade
Forge our swords and fletch our arrows
Strengthen all that man has made

Skillful Smith, O strength of builders
As we take up plow and spade
Mend the stones and raise the broken
In the flame reforge our blades

Lovely Maiden, face of women
Keep our daughters ever fair
Guard their youth and guard their virtue
Weave your flowers in their hair

Lovely Maiden, dream of children
Take all lovers in your care
May they live to see the morrow
Grant them bliss that they may share

Revered Stranger, O unknown one
Be we strange or maimed or small
Whether lonely or forgotten
Walk beside us, one and all

Revered Stranger, endless traveller
Hold us when at last we fall
Guide us to the seven heavens
Bear our bier and draw our pall
