The Stakeout with Blair and without Puppies

Summary:

Jim and Blair on a stakeout

Notes:

This is a ficlet for the 25 concrit: dialogue only

Work Text:

“Hey Jim, you want some spaghetti?“

“Smells good, but didn’t you want to go with me on that stakeout?“

“Sure. But I thought it would be after midnight?“

“No, it will be til midnight. You want to come now?“

“Yeah, just go ahead, I’ll just put the pasta away.“

“Not into my blue tupperware again!“

“There aren’t any blue tupperware boxes left. You take them all to work. Bring them back.“

“Grab some snacks otherwise I have to listen to your growling stomach the whole time.“

“Okay, okay. So what is this case about now?“

“I’ll tell you in the car. Don’t forget your warm jacket.“

“This isn’t still the puppy smuggling ring Henry was talking about?“

“No.“

“So what is it then?“

“Put your seat-belt on.“

“Is it the counterfeit money case?“

“They are trying to find out where the printing was done. They suspect it might be here in Cascade.“

“How much money are we talking about?“

“Half a million Euros. Maybe.“

“Not bad.“

“Henry thinks they might print other currencies too and then take them out of the country with a freighter.“

“So this is a bigger operation?”

“Maybe, maybe just two guys and a printer. Your stomach is already growling.”

“What are you eating there, Chief? Smells like you have kept it under your desk for three months.”

“How would you know how it smells under my desk?”

“Musty, like old, moldy books.”

“My desk doesn’t stink of mold!”

“Your desk smells of all kinds of weird shit.”

“It does not and this pastry doesn’t taste like it smells. Try one!”

“I’d rather not. And holding it under my nose won’t encourage me any more.”

“Try one.”

“No.”

“Chicken shit.”

“I’m not eating it.”

“Henry and Simon liked it.”

“I seriously doubt Simon eats moldy puff pastry.”

“It’s filled with mushroom pate´.”

“I’m not eating it! And take it away. Put it back in the zip lock bag before it stinks up my car.”

“Mmm, alm gone nom.”

“Now you have crumbs all over your front.”

“For how long is this observation going?”

“I think it’s two months now.”

“Two months and they still haven’t figured out if there is a printer inside?”

“Henry couldn’t get a warrant.”

“Maybe they were watching an empty warehouse all this time. Oh, now a light went on. Did you see anybody go inside?”

“No.”

“Are you sure this is the right place?”

“Stay in the car, I’ll have a look around.”

“I’m not staying in the car.”

“Jim? Anything?”

“Shh, shh.”

“Maybe you could listen for the sound of a printer or the smell of the printing colors?“

“Great idea, only I have no idea how a printer sounds or how the printing colors might smell. This area is full of chemical evaporations.“

“We could go find a printer tomorrow and you can take some sensory samples.“

“Sounds like fun! And how am I going to explain to Henry how I discovered the printer and the money?”

“Uhm. Maybe…”

“And it still wouldn’t get Henry a warrant.”

“I don’t know how nobody ever notices two guys sitting in a car for hours? How do cops get away with that?”

“We are alone here, this is a warehouse district after hours.”

“Yeah, we are parking. Parking in the dark.”

“You are mostly eating. In the dark.”

“Like nocturnal predators.”

“And making a mess of my car.”

“Sorry. I’m not used to eating like that.”

“Just clean it out tomorrow.”

“Hey, did you notice that food tastes different, if you eat without seeing anything?”

“I’m not going to do some more food tests with a blindfold now.”

“Did I tell you about the one time, when mom and I went to that fancy restaurant where you eat in complete darkness?”

“Maybe.”

“What was that, shooting? Jim, they are shooting!”

“Stay in the car!”

“Not again, man!”

“Why couldn’t we have saved puppies instead?”
